The hypocrisy on this forum, demonstrated in this thread, is killing me.

"Fuck CoD. It's the Fifa of FPS games, I mean look, a game every year! Activision are such greedy bastards milking the franchise like this. They should stop making them. While we're at it, they should stop making Halo games, one game every 3 years is obviously milking! I mean 5 games, wtf this is flooding the market with sheer generic-ness, Bungie should make more games other than Halo! Now where's our Half-Life 2 episode 3? WTF why is it taking sooo long? There hasn't been another game in... 2 YEARS! OMG! I want a new Half-Life every year dammit, Half-Life is such an awesome series, why are they bothering with these other games like L4D and TF2? They should concentrate on Half-Life forever! I hope Valve keep making more Half-Lifes!"

This kind of bullshit double standard really gets to me. Opinions on the games themselves aside, some of you people are so hypocritical it's unbelievable. It's all just rampant fanboyism, and it's bloody irritating.

I have no problem with the games themselves; indeed, props to Valve for the passive storytelling and Source engine. But honestly, you can't have this double standard, it doesn't work.

We aren't asking for a Half Life every year. Episode 2 came out in 2007 and since then we've heard very little on Episode 3. A few bits on concept art and that Valve have been working with sign language and that's about it. Aren't we not allowed to ask where Episode 3 is or what's going on with it?

You might not be, and good on you, but lots of people are. People overreact so damn much it annoys me. Maybe I overreacted too, that was sort of a manifestation of all the irritation I've been building up at HL's fanbase throughout my time on the forums.

Maybe If Yahtzee makes a joke review about it and it become's a Viewer's Choice episode, then they will release it(just like DNF).

Thats understandable. Im a firm believer that Episode 3 will rear its head some time soon, that Valve is just taking extra care with it. Im sure people do get frustrated at the lack on information and ask why we are getting Portal 2, DOTA 2 and other releases yet nothing on Episode 3.

a) It has been over three years since the last Half Life release.

b) You are assuming that it is the same individuals saying those things. One person saying, "Activision should stop making CoD" and then a different person saying, "Valve should make more Half Life" does not constitute hypocrisy.

c) Is it really so hard to accept that some people out there think the Half Life series is better then the CoD series?

d) Are people not allowed to like things? Why is automatically fanboyism? Because you don't particularly like the product in question?

Did anyone ever see the Angry Videogame Fag? Kind of like the AVG, only he's actually funny. Anyway, he made a really popular Hitman Blood Money walkthrough. That was like, 2007? He made 2 episodes that went down a storm, and ended with "to be continued..." and to this day people are still waiting for episode 3 to come out. He's not making an Episode 3.
The funny thing is, he's obese. Just like Gabe!

It's because Valve knows that if they don't make the series' finale perfect, their headquarters will get overrun by an angry mob of fanboys.

Just to play devil's advocate...

Is it possible that Episode 3 is overdue because Valve doesn't know where to take the story?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel that Ep3 owes us some explanation as to what the f**k has really been going on since the end of HL2. Valve have built anticipation masterfully, throwing out subtle but titillating hints every so often. Now, with the final Episode, it seems like the time has come for them to reveal what they've been hinting at. But do they even know what they've been hinting at?

In short, have Valve been making this sh*t up as they go along, and are they now at a loss as to how to wrap it up?
Well Episode 3 will most likely finish what Episode 2 brought up concerning the Borealis, what the Combine will now do after we closed the super portal and the aftermath of the ending and what they will do now they know everything about the resistance. So there are a few major points that need to be addressed in Episode 3 so they do have something to go on

WHO are Gmans employers? He gave them the crystl before aliens invaded. So who are they. Also why did he not leave as soon as it happened. Well he did teleport you and him through the alien world so yeah. His employers... Combine... or something bigger.

Source engine out of date? It is constantly being updated...

Just look at this picture:

Now look at this one:

Looks like it has been getting sufficient updates to stay new to me.

Episode 3?

Fuck that shit.

If it's not Half Life 3, I'll kill Gabe Newell, and you won't get ANYTHING.

This. The finale to the series will be wholly unsatisfying unless it gives some sense of closure and gives us answers to the questions which have been there since the start. Essentially, who is the Gman, who does he work for and how has he transported you through time?

The Combine are fairly clearly not the major power in the Half Life universe.

And another point, the original Half Life ended poorly, Half Life 2 ended poorly, maybe Valve just suck at endings?

Ah yes, I am begining to question weather they are actually making episode 3, that, or they are just REALLY lazy.

I think that they follow the Pixar formula: Don't make a sequel unless your ideas for it are better than the previous installment.
Which is both good and bad.
Good: We get quality and lots of it.
Bad: We have to wait a damn long time.
But I'm willing to wait if it means getting good games out of it. Hell, more people should follow this formula.
If the trailer for Cars 2 is any indication, that method is no longer used.
Hey I just watched that trailer and it wasn't so bad. I mean Cars 1 was fairly average compared to their other films so they don't have to try too hard to beat it :3

Yeah... sorry, that was kind of an angry outburst born of a bad temper and the irritation built up within me by the Half-Life fanbase in general. Also, I never implied CoD was better than CoD or anything - I've never played any of its games, as it happens - I was just noting how many people seemed to rant about CoD titles coming out within a year of each other before complaining Half-Life 2 episode 3 didn't come out the year after episode 2 (which came out the year after episode 1). Nor did I ever try to imply that people weren't allowed to like the Half-Life games - again, it was to do with the hypocrisy concerning release dates...

But yeah, though I could have worded my message a bit more diplomatically, I still find it odd that I'm the first person to call the forums in general out on this. It's even worse when they call Halo out on it, since that has a perfectly reasonable 3 year gap between games (minus ODST, but that was only an expansion - albeit a damn good one) and fewer games than the Half-Life series.

The thing about the episodes, is that they are just that, episodes. meant to be released quicker like part games to keep the story going. So they end with a little bit or cliffhanger to heighten the anticipation. so to wait 3 years for an episode kinda throws a wrench into that.
CoD releases fairly generic titles frequently which is why people say they are milking it. its kinda like comparing a company that makes terrible movies to a company that makes good TV.

I honestly think this game no longer exists.

What we are now waiting for is Half-Life 3.

Why do I think this? Look at how long this has been in production, This game should have been out at least two years ago. If it's taking this long, it's because they:

a). Realized they wanted to do more than they thought
b). Got busy with other projects
c). Both

And it is probably a mix of both. But there are a lot of questions and lose ends, and lets face it, there is no way they could tie it all up in a five to seven hour episodic wrap up game. This is a story that needs answers, and some of the questions about the games storyline are likely more complex than we realize. And by now, the Half-Life graphics, good as they still are, are not up to date. So a graphical buff up is in order as well. They are probably also trying to find new and interesting gameplay moments too. There's a lot of work to be done, and it's such a beloved franchise, the developers probably want to end this series with a bang (or continue it maybe.)

I'd like to see some proof that they are working on HL:E3 or HL3 so I can at least know this isn't the new vaporware king, but they'll keep it under wraps as long as they need to...

I think they're just more interested in there other IPs right now, I'm sure they'll come back to it in a few years.
