Happy 15th Birthday, PlayStation

December 3rd, 1994: A day that will live in infamy. Fifteen years ago today, the little gray Sony PlayStation hit shelves in Japan, introducing a powerful new player to the console arena.

It really is kind of breathtaking to consider exactly how far the industry has come in such a short amount of time. Today we have games that are mind-blowingly close to photorealism, and despite its recent difficulties in the market, a person would be a fool to say that Sony isn't a major player in the console race.

But a mere decade and a half ago, Sony was a newbie going up against established contenders like Sega and Nintendo, CDs were just starting to be used in lieu of cartridges, and the state-of-the-art graphics... well, they looked like this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMw0lDozU50].

Sony might have been a bit player when its unassuming PlayStation hit shelves in Akihabara fifteen years ago, but to say the device "took off" would be a bit of an understatement. Within a year, the console had launched in both North America (September 9th, 1995) and Europe (September 29th, 1995) and proved to be as popular in those markets as it had been on the other side of the Pacific.

Sony roared past Sega and Nintendo, leaving the Saturn and Nintendo 64 coughing up dust, and went on to dominate the console market for not just one but two consecutive generations. The PlayStation gave us Resident Evil, Symphony of the Night, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy VII - as well as roughly a bazillion other games that we fondly revere as classics nowadays.

So yes, today was a landmark day in gaming history, and the industry has never been the same since. Happy birthday, PlayStation [http://www.scei.co.jp/PS15th/].

Fuck the N64, the PS1 had all the RPGs. Chrono Cross, FF7, 8, 9. Legend of Mana. The list goes on. Heck, Spyro and Crash, too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Damn , I have the urge to play the original tekken now!
Retro gaming nostalgia follows:
I worked in an electrical retailer when the origial PS came out.
I remember it being fairly pricey on release (as had the Saturn). We'd some great after hours games of tekken on the display model and the best thing was that Christmas the Store manager let me and one or two of the other guys borrow unsold Playstations and a heap of games (on condition they were returned after the Xmas break in pristine condition)and controllers .Had some great times that year playing Ridge racer, MK trilogy ,Doom and a few others...
Over the years I've amassed a collection of Playstations , I still have a chipped one somewhere as one or two originals and ps0nes.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

We all love you... well, I do at least.
And so do I. I still remember vividly the day I got my PS1, I think it was Tuesday, or Friday...maybe Monday, don´t really remember. Anyway, it was a joyous day...I think.

Happy birthday, PlayStation! We´ve had a lot of fun.

Happy Birthday Playstation. Thanks for making sure the world didn't become a Nintendocracy. We needed more variety and you provided it. :D

I was 7 when the grays came. On retrospect, that was one bitchin' 8th birthday I had. Oh the hours I spents cursing it for Legends Of Dragoon, Metal Gear Solid, and Dino Crisis.
