Harmonix Announces Intriguingly Familiar Rock Band Blitz

The next Rock Band title ditches the plastic instruments in favor of old-school Harmonix-style rhythm gaming.

Last night Harmonix revealed the upcoming Rock Band Blitz, a downloadable rhythm title scheduled for release on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network later this year. This morning, a trailer for the game appeared online. You can see it embedded at right.

Notice anything spectacularly awesome about that footage? If not, you're probably too young to remember the games Harmonix released before they hit it big with Guitar Hero. Specifically, I'm talking about Frequency and Amplitude, two rhythm titles that featured almost exactly this same kind of track-jumping gameplay over a decade ago.

The key difference between those titles and Rock Band Blitz however, is that Frequency and Amplitude had decidedly techno/dance-oriented soundtracks that were completely static, whereas Blitz can import songs directly from your existing, presumably massive Rock Band music library to complement the 25 new songs it ships with. Given that the downloadable Rock Band catalogue includes over 3,000 songs, players have free rein to create any kind of soundtrack they wish.

Oh, and as a bonus, Rock Band 3 owners can also import Rock Band Blitz's native song library for use with all their plastic instruments.

With the game still months from release there isn't a wealth of info available on the title, but try Kirk Hamilton's hands-on preview at Kotaku [http://www.rockband.com/games/rockbandblitz] -- he's a huge music geek, so his word is extra valuable here.

Normally this is where I'd caution people to not get their hopes up over a game that is still a ways off, but c'mon, this is exactly what Harmonix does best. If you want to get super-excited, go right ahead. You look like you could use the dopamine.

This isn't surprising. The Rock Band for PSP was a lot like Amplitude (which is still my favorite music game of all time). This worries me because it only has two hits for each track. It's not much of a challenge compared to the fun I had trying to Master Amplitude.

People still play rock band?
650 tracks and counting in my collection. Rock Band 3 is the perfect party game, it's fun, quick to get into, people get it, it's also polished to a mirror shine and pro mode gives you a reason to play alone.

It seems that people who tried/saw demos are saying that, beyond the basic concepts like changing lanes, RB Blitz doesn't play like Amplitude/Frequency at all.

Anyone mind telling me if this styled of music game is actually fun? Never played one like this and it looks like it would just be better to stick with the instruments.

It seems I've got somewhere with my animal sacrifices...but this isn't Rock Band: Japan so looks like I'll have to stop by the farm again after work this morning.

I'm...not entirely sure how you'd play this. Amplitude and Frequency were around when I was younger, but I never got into that genre until Rock band/Guitar Hero. So I'm not sure how you would play that based on the trailer. It is like Um Jammer Lammy or something like that...? Where you press a series of button combinations and stuff...?

I'm so confused.

If it is like Frequency/Amplitude, you have all of the parts (drums, guitar, ect.) streaming notes down their respective lanes at the same time. You play the notes on one lane and, after playing for a few seconds without any mistakes, you will complete that lane. Once a lane is complete it will auto-play for a limited time and you can move to the next lane. The goal is to keep as many parts playing as possible. If you don't have enough parts playing, your fan meter will go down and eventually empty, which results in a game over.

Think of it kind of like spinning plates.

Oooooh...I get it now. Well, it sounds interesting. I never played Amplitude or Frequency so...I'm in, especially if I get to play with my DLC songs.
