Harmonix Requests Licenses For Rap and R&B Tracks

Harmonix has requested use of the licenses of four hip hop and rap tracks which don't seem to fit into Rock Band.

In the January report [http://www.roynet.com/index.cfm?event=aboutus], the Royalty Network lists requests for the following four songs by Harmonix, the makers of Rock Band:

"Ante Up" by M.O.P. [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_6?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music&field-keywords=ante+up&sprefix=ante+u&ih=5_1_0_1_0_0_1_1_1_1.8_106&fsc=6](Grinnage/Murry/Pittman) administered on behalf of Blind Man's Bluff Music (ASCAP).
"Evacuate the Dancefloor" by Cascada [http://www.amazon.com/gp/dmusic/order/amd-get-interstitial.html?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B003U0A2IM&isTrack=1&qid=1280158784&tryInPlace=1&sr=1-1] (Eshuijs/Reuter/Peifer/Reuter) Sub-published on behalf of Talpa Music (ASCAP).
"Say Aah" by Trey Songz [http://www.amazon.com/Say-feat-Fabolous-Album-Version/dp/B002MYCHXK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1280158811&sr=1-1](Ferebee/Neverson/Scales/Walker) Published on behalf of Skelatune Muzik (BMI)/ Tenyor Music (BMI)
"The Way I Are" by Timbaland feat D.O.E. [http://www.amazon.com/The-Way-I-Are/dp/B000V66I0Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1280158832&sr=1-1] (Hills/Hilson/Maultsby/Mosley/Bale'Wa/Mosley /Muhammad /Nelson) administered on behalf of Jerry Lee (ASCAP).

Activision has released games like DJ Hero 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Wii-DJ-Hero-Bundle-Turntable-Nintendo/dp/B0028ZNX7M/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1280158863&sr=1-3] has requested the use "I Will Be Here" by Tiesto Benny Benassi Remix (McDonald/Mitchell /Verwest ,Waakop).

Are these license requests the first hint that Harmonix is entering the fray and making a Hip Hop Band?

Gangsta Rap Crew?

Grillz & Bitchez?

Phat Beat Posse?

We could go on all day...

Ante Up is the shit, I love that song. But that's not gonna save this game.

Unless they go all out and make it as thug/gansta/whiggerlicious as possible. The only thing that ever, EVER made Guitar Hero appealing was the Air Guitar. When you whip out your air guitar, you look like a silly fool and everyone likes a little of that. When you air rap, you look like a giant douche and everyone quietly resents you.

I do have a couple suggestions:
-The star-power meter should be re-engineered and called the Hate-o-meter - when they hate on you, it only makes you stronger.
-This game should be a strictly microphone game. To play the game you must suffer the humiliation of picking up a mic and trying to nail someone else's rap.
-It should come in a gold box on a big gold chain, and be distributed on platinum discs. You should get bonus points for wearing the box around your neck as you play.
-It should be a natal game and it should evaluate your camera presence as you play. Because no one cares how good your flow is, as long as you look fly in the video.
-Instead of music merch sponsors, like the ones you get in Guitar Zero, you should get sponsorships by Gucci and Prada and other fashion companies so your character will look like a women's style specialist, just like a real rapper.
-There should be a GTA-style mini-game where your character tries to "get back to his roots" by selling weed on street corners. He should be able to resort to this whenever he's low on funds and can't afford to tour, or just whenever the rest of the game is too boring.

I like that song. But the rest...No.

Maybe its just a hip-hop track pack or something.

Wow. Lots of serious spite going down here.

I don't listen to the stuff much, but there is some hip-hop which is very good. I'm more of a rock-and-roll guy myself though.

This won't be for a new game. Harmonix has stated numerous times that they want to have ALL kinds of music available as DLC.

Sure, I don't think the songs they picked were very good (except Ante Up, that's a bad ass track), but I'm glad to see new stuff become available.

Exactly.

THE GREAT JT'S SUGGESTION FOR POSSIBLE HARMONIX RAP GAME NAME:
"Even Sadder Than Actually Rapping Because I Have Absolutely No Musical Ability And Cannot Contribute Meaningfully To Society Hero"

I'm kidding, I'm kidding, don't hit!

Seriously, I'm thinking "Hip-Hop Hero" would work.

I didn't think hip-hop music even used guitars. o_O Not that I'm an expert in that particular field... However, I hope this doesn't mark Harmonix's first foray into the "DJ Hero" scene, or whatever their equivalent would be.

Even though I can appreciate that some people genuinely enjoyed DJ Hero, it really was a flop, and I thought Harmonix would be smarter than to simply join the flock.

Wow. Lots of hate for rap and R&B going on here. You'd think a community that gets picked on as much as the gaming set does would be a bit more open minded.

I'm never been into the whole "plastic instrument" game thing except when gaming with friends. If the track list is good, I'll probably be giving this one some consideration.

What an interesting role for the singer...

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
A real gangsta-ass nigga plays his cards right
A real gangsta-ass nigga never runs his fuckin mouth
'cause real gangsta-ass niggas don't start fights
And niggas always gotta high cap
Showin' all his boys how he shot em

HA HA!

Could just be they want to put up some Rap for DLC. I won't buy it, so it doesn't really effect me. I am interested in them broadening the horizons for music games.

PS You don't like, just don't buy it. You really don't need to rage against it so much.
