Ignoring the cut scenes anyone know exactly how long the game play parts of the order 1886 are? just curious. If its a 5-7 hour game, you can see the cut scenes on youtube, so what are you actually getting for your money?

It should be remembered that games are not like movies, which have exact lengths. Game completion time varies depending on player skill, play style, familiarity with the game and the definition of 'completed'. You can mess around in most games as long as you like, but if you watch speedruns, you'll notice they can be incredibly quick even without massive skips/sequence breaking. All you can really look at is averages.

While it's true that games aren't like movies, the actual playtime wouldn't vary that wildly between players as long as the they play the same way. Well, that's true for for linear games, not so much for open world ones. So average playtime is a good estimation for how long you should expect to play it for.

At any rate, looking at the average completion time doesn't answer OP's question, which is what's the average play time. Unless there is data for how long the cutscenes are. I tried googling but I keep getting results that say "Cutscenes be really long, yo" that don't specify how long they are.

By all accounts this game is pretty linear though. The error margin wouldn't be that wide.

If you look at this page

http://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=20067

and click "Submissions", you can see a breakdown of all the times submitted. Main story completion times range from under five hours to over ten. So yes, there is quite a bit of variance.

I beat it in about 4-6 hours and I wasn't exactly trying to set world records.

The cutscenes are fucking long too. I wouldn't recommend paying full price for it, it's not worth it unless you REALLY like it.

Super Best Friends bloke (either Mat or Pat) played it and timed it; he said he died a few times, he wasn't rushing for it, and he still finished at about 5 hours or so, and that it was a shit ton of cutscene and there wasn't much to really do except pick up different guns.

I took three long gaming sessions (3-4 hours each) to beat the game. I was playing on Hard and taking my time to explore the world.

I really liked the game, too, by the way.

So...minus what you can get free on youtube at 1080p 60fps (ie: the cut scenes) your paying £45 for three hours of gameplay? that's the point I was trying to make.

No, thats not good at all.

Yeah it's short, but it's not as if you're only paying for the gameplay, right? You're paying for the whole package, the total experience. Just because part of it isn't interactive doesn't mean it's worth anything. If you're the type of player that skips all cutscenes, The Order was never your type of game to begin with since the story and cutscenes are very much a part of the whole experience.

True, but my point being you can get that entirely on youtube for free.

I suppose you don't pay for movies either, because those can be found online for free?

Look, if you don't think The Order is worth your cash, don't buy it. Don't bother with it and go play/watch/read something else you do think it worth your time and money. If you'd rather not pay full retail price, wait for a price drop or even an appearance on Plus. Don't be a dick who takes stuff for free just because he can.

Ermmmm no I do pay for movies but all the order 1886 cut scenes are on youtube LEGALLY.

Dont go jumping to conclusions my friend. I'm trying to say it has no worth because its main draw are the cut scenes and story which are free and available legally on youtube.

This is the problem with narrative heavy games with little gameplay.

Do you understand?

To each his own. I didn't find myself bored or unengaged at any time, I quite enjoyed the story and the universe, and didn't mind the cutscenes in the least. I paid full price for the game, and don't regret it at all.

I had a LOT more fun with this game than with, say, 'Heavy Rain', which is pretty much QTE: The Movie yet everyone drooled over it.

What you don't understand it that it has no worth to you.

What I don't understand is that you do want the pretty cinematics, but you don't want the game as a whole? The cutscenes and gameplay provide context for the other. It seems kind of pointless to want part of the thing (but only because you can get it for free) and not bother with the rest unless it meets certain quota. What's wrong with looking at the big picture?

If you are actually interested in the game, it would be much wiser to wait for a price drop and experience the game as a game, instead of spoiling the experience with a shoddy LP or Youtube playlist.

Cutscenes are old fashioned, they were a lazy way of providing context to a game. AAA studios have insisted on sticking with them because it's easier/cheaper than telling the story though actual gameplay itself.

Edit:
I think what Fonejackerjon means is that "The Order 1886" has no worth as a game. There's so little worth to it, it would have been better off as a CGI movie.

So, I guess you have a way of telling the entire story of Mass Effect without any cutscenes? Or, to be a little more fair, do you have a way of telling the entire story of Xenoblade Chronicles without any cutscenes?

And even if you do have a way, why should developers drop cutscenes when plenty of gamers find plenty of enjoyment from games that use them? In fact, plenty of people (including myself) actually enjoy taking a short break from the gameplay to watch an interesting cutscene.

Sure, I'm all for exploring ways to tell a story through gameplay itself, but that's a matter of exploring what we have to work with in a game and expanding what we do with them. And that's the thing: We should be expanding the ways in which we use the tools available to us in making games, not taking them away. And when you consider the great stories that have been told in part through cutscenes over the years, I find it very hard to justify developers limiting themselves by never using such an effective tool.
