Has there ever been a game directly based off of a book?

I also remember a really old pc game based off Alice in wonderland... was a pretty gory game too.. Cant quite remember the title but the cat looked like he was skinless. That didn't haunt me when I was little.... >.>
That would be an incredibly great game known as American Mcgee's Alice which I believe may be made into a movie.

the Divine Comedy is a masterpiece and it saddens me that EA is going to fuck it up

Since when was "Hte Hobbit" a spin-off of anything? It was written before Lord of the Rings!

The game "The Fellowship of the Ring" was actually based off the book instead of the movie. That and Dante's Inferno, but that game seems to be nothing like the original source material so I don't know. Another one I just thought of is "The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy". It is a very old text adventure game, similar to the likes of Zork.
That Hitchhikers one was the One where you could kill yourself at the start wasn't it? That was incredibly funny the first time playing.

Not sure how Dante's Inferno the game would piss off Christendom any more than Dante did back when he wrote the original poem. The Divine Comedy has never been regarded as holy writs or anything, most Christians I know don't seem to regard it all. The game will probably just piss off people in the normal way any video game involving demons and hell does.

American McGee's Alice is a continuation of the book Alice in wonderland.
I believe it's more of a continuation of Through the Looking Glass, than Alice in Wonderland, but now I'm just nitpicking.

Some for H.P. Lovecraft's stuff.
Parasite Eve was based off a book, too.

And Sam and Max came from a comic book, if that counts.
Yar, wasn't Bethesda's Call of Cthulhu: DCotE pretty closely modelled after Lovecraft's Innsmouth in plot as well as setting?

Lol, nice editing skills...

Seriously OP, if your going to make a mistake and not realize there IS a game version of the Hobbit you could at least just admit it and include it in your OP - instead of trying to insult me after editing...
I didn't edit it.

That's completely uncalled for and only makes you look arrogant and rude. I mean, he wasn't out to hurt you, and if it were a matter of "first post!" then he would have been banned long ago. It was a mistake. But we're human. That's what we do.
Sorry

That was unnecessary, considering you edited your original post to cover yourself.

And technically there has not yet been a movie based on The Hobbit yet, and so D_987's post is accurate. Additionally, there was actually a game based on The Hobbit long before Peter Jackson did his grisly work and gave us the The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

And let's not forget the game based off of The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, as well as various games based off of their Dragonlance series.
I DIDN'T EDIT IT!!! I MENTIONED THE HOBBIT BECAUSE I HAD ALREADY THOUGHT OF IT!!!
