Im currently playing through NIER , and its the first time in my 20+ years of gaming that i HAD to turn off the in game music because it's so terrible. Has this every happened to you? and if so, which game did you have to do this just to make it playable?

Uh.... I'm sorry but... how exactly? o_O

Easily the best part of Nier was the music. Even people who hated the game loved the music. >.>
In fact, that was something the creator addressed before. Said something about how he thought it was funny that people liked the soundtrack more than the actual game.

ANYWAY, on topic, a recent game I bought, Ar Tonelico Qoga, has some of the most annoying and awful music I've ever heard in a game before. May just be that I'm 2 hours in, but the opening music and voice acting is awful that I just had to turn it off for at least a while.

Bayonetta, abused 'fly me to the moon' and put the worse in-game porn over it seen since leasure suit larry, turned it off very shortly after gameplay started in the cemetry

Warrior Within.

Whoever made it should be shot, whoever thought of putting it in the game should be shot, whoever liked it should be shot, and whoever prefers WW to the Sands of Time should be shot.

And whoever thought the Prince should go goth should be shot.

any first person shooter i ever play. They are pointless in them. They are all the same orchestral melodies. Exception being the Original Theme to Battlefield1942 (still played the game with the music off, but the intro video i'm always willing to watch/listen to.)

Not that they are bad, its just they don't add anything to the game and in most case for me, break immersion.

L4D is perhaps the only FPS i play with it on. Reason being that the music is a gameplay Cue to an impending event.

The only game where I've turned off the music was Tsukihime. It was a decent piano track, but it seemed like the exact same thing played over and over again throughout the entire game.

I don't play those types of games anymore.

I turned the music off in Minecraft. Not because it's bad, it just doesn't really appeal to me. I also prefer to play my own music in that anyway.

I turned the music off in Need For Speed Undergound 2 though, because it was a bunch of rap, pop, and hip hop, none of which appeals to me.

The music in New Vegas and Fallout 3 were both really repetitive so I turned it off in those too.

Usually, I'll leave the music on though because I think that it adds to the experience that the developer was trying to create.

Ninja Gaiden 2. There's only 3, 4 tracks at maximum worth listening to.

The soundtracks to MvC3 and MK 2011 are also quite forgettable.

I have never turned off a game's music because it was bad, but I have turned off a game's music because I wanted to play my own countless times. It usually happens with puzzle games. I just can't focus quite as good with that boop-beep-boop music as I can with my trance playlist. =P

While I definitely like the other two games (haven't played Forgotten Sands yet) more, I don't hate Warrior Within. It makes a little sense that the Prince would be in a darker place, as he's been hunted by the Dahaka for an undefined amount of time and that would screw with anybody. Being willing to do anything to stay alive can take you to a dark place.

But I was still happy when the old Prince came back in Two Thrones (for the most part).

As for turning off in-game music? I've never turned if off because I hate it, but I've turned it down so I could hear dialogue in both Mass Effect games. For some reason, either the music is way too loud or the voice-overs are too soft at times.

Don't play Forgotten Sands. As for WW, I get the feeling the Dahaka was only invented after they decided to start cutting their own wrists. The Sands of Time was not a happy game, it just didn't need grunge music and grimy environments to pull it off.

Not usually because it's bad, but because I want to put something else on.

Even then, it's the last step before completely losing interest in a game. Happened in Minecraft and Just Cause 2, once things started feeling repetitive. If I'm not getting bored out of my skull I'll leave it on, because apparently I don't get tired of good tunes all that quickly.

Jet Set Radio Future. Not that the music was very bad (I wasn't that fond of it), but ohmygod did it get annoying.

World of Warcraft. The music was uninteresting, bland, and really didn't feel unique. I won't lie, the game had an okay amount of potentially tracks, but that wasn't enough to sink me into the environment, which was pretty dull itself.

Ummm no... I haven't seen game that has music that bad you'd turn it off... Except Pokemon Yellow of course and that was probably because it was too repetitive rather than outright bad.

Special mention goes to the Cross Examination themes from the Ace Attorney games for not being distracting, while still being super awesome. Quite a difficult thing to do I believe...

I turned it off not because I didn't like the music but because I did and didn't want it ruined.

Is the game that bad? I was interested because it had the original (SOT) Prince in it. And I did like the music from SOT a lot better. It seemed to fit into the game better, since it had a more period feel. I'm sure they could have made a more organic soundtrack in WW that still gave it the dark violent vibe they seemed to be reaching for.

I liked the idea of the Dahaka, but I feel it wasn't used to its full potential, seeing as how its rarely mentioned except when you are running away from it. Made sense for there to be something guarding the timeline, although as powerful as he was made out to be, he was pretty easy to escape and didn't seem to be very smart.

City of Heroes.

Terrible generic electronica/techno loops. I play my own music behind the game. Occasionally, I listen to The Cape Radio, our own player-run radio station on the Virtue Server.

Crazy Taxi.

I almost always mute in game music (unless it serves a specific in game purpose) in favor of pipelining my own music over the top.
