Well, we could just put laws in place that it's not a crime (and will not start an intergalactic diplomatic incident) to kill someone who's being a dick to a heavily armed alien? We could call it "Freedom of Disintegration - The First Ammendment's rebuttal."
I think a law like that would be proof enough we're not ready by a long shot.

I think if aliens do exist and are more advanced then us - something they'd have to be if they could reach our planet and we can't reach theirs, there's a different reason for them to destroy us.

I somehow can't shake the image of aliens killing us off in self-defense. Mankind would be stupid enough to draw first blood at some point. We have a pretty good track record of doing just that.

Not to mention the problems with xenophobia. We can barely accept each other if we look slightly different. So what'd stop someone from killing or attacking a lifeform from a different planet for that very reason?

I don't worry about the aliens as much as I do about ourselves. We're just not ready for contacting aliens yet.
I also agree with this. Many people see other humans as, well not human. Lord knows how we would treat actual people who aren't human.

True, but people would still act like, well people and probably still hate them.

Also the fact that they probably would have seen hitler's/wwII broadcasts as well is another reason to avoid them

Hmm. I'd hope that the aliens would have realized the mistakes associated with genocide, just as humanity, for the most part, already has. Still, being cautious is never a bad thing. In all likelihood, I think that we're more likely the discover a less-intelligent species than the other way around, given what we know about the universe already. I mean, since we have not met alien life yet and are in the process of developing more advanced space travel technology, if things go on as they have been, we will be fully prepared to explore space and still not have met alien life in a few centuries. In that case, we'll have to be the instigators and establish first contact ourselves.

I think the thinking behind these alien outreach programmes is that as civilisations advance tech-wise, they also improve their morality (if it's possible to have objectively good morals) and become less xenophobic etc. based on how humans have (although we're doing so pretty slowly). ^^

Edit: Personally, I think it's being very hopeful.

Well duh!
The Gou'ald tried to wipe us out a ton of times, plus the Replicators tried to devour our Galaxy...
Of all the people in the world I'm surprised Mr. Hawking hasn't heard of the Stargate Program under Cheyenne Mountain.

....

What? Don't give me that look! The Stargate is real! REAL I SAY!

He has a good point. But I have a question for him in turn- if at least one of all of those hundreds upon hundreds of alien sightings that have occurred throughout history is genuine, which would mean aliens have visited before, why haven't they attacked if they were planning on doing so? There's always a possibility that aliens, if they exist, may not be friendly, but there's also the possibility that they're indifferent to us.
Or they could just be scouting parties, after all, no army just attacks without doing a little recon.
Seems to me that we need to get the planetary shields and giant lasers in place before its too late.

I'm gonna do the young person thing and say they probably won't be and your looking at a worst case senario. We have no way of predicting what aliens could be like. We are naturally curious so we ask is it out there. Another alien species may simply think, well theres a new species, let's log it and move on with our lives. The species would also need to be curious enough however to enter space. If it were a species which, hypothetically, was only concerned with improving their local surroundings, space would not be on top of their things to do list, but rather to revolutionise their local habitat to be more comfy, so would probably, if they did meet us, would be more curious as to who we were, but as to what this curiosity might reveal again depends on the species.

Don't listen to him folks. Just been watching too many episodes of that "Wormhole Xtreme". We have nothing to fear from symbiotic snake monsters.

Honestly, if aliens did come to earth starting trouble, they will have picked the wrong race. We've been coming up with better and more inventive ways of killing stuff ever since we realised that rocks and sticks hurt.

Thats a lot of R&D on how to send aliens away crying to momma.

That and the fact that if we kill one of their soldiers, We will figure out their tech and use it for ourselves.

Considering how health and safety conscious a lot of societies have become (how many times have people been sued over a wet floor etc?), we seem to be pretty cavalier about our planet's security in this sense. What happened to erring on the side of caution?

tl;dr: I agree with the professor.

Well, you can't fault the man's logic. He does raise a valid point. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT...

...while im not denying that there is other life in the universe, i think the aliens would come here for conquest, kinda like how humans are trying to find hospitable life on other planets so we have a back-up plan, and we will probably destroy that intelligent life so we can not have competition...

Who am I to sisagree with Hawking, but I'm not all that worried. The universe is so big and vast that we probably have both aliens like in star trek as well as civilizations so advanced that they are nothing more but immortal gods. But I have to agree that we would probably not benefit from contact. We would just get a massive inferiority complex, knowing that we are not the centre of the universe and such. Our ego would get desintegrated.

God, I love that man.

And really, it's hard not to agree, I mean, by the time a species has actually developed some sort of space travel theve probably used up most of the resouces on there home planet, wether due to wasteful useage, useing the resources to build those ships, or other reasones.
What if they're so advanced that they built a device that allows them to break down any material at the atomic level and reform it into anything they want?
