Hello, Sweetie: BBC Reveals Dr. Who Game for PC and PS3

All of time and space, everywhere and anywhere, every star that ever was...on your PC or PS3 in early 2012.

The BBC has announced the development of the first in a series of console and PC games based on its enormously successful Dr. Who series. Dr. Who: The Eternity Clock will follow the Eleventh Doctor and River Song through a new, fully-fledged story on PS3, Vita and PC in early 2012.

Eternity Clock is being developed for digital download "in high definition" and with "photo-realistic graphics" by English studio Supermassive Games [http://www.supermassivegames.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=50&Itemid=45], a finalist in the Develop Excellence Awards New Studio competition in 2011. The studio has a history with PC and PlayStation development (including Move), and says it is "delighted" to be working on the project.

The game will feature a brand new "action-filled" Dr. Who storyline penned in collaboration with BBC Wales' writing team. With full voiceover tracks recorded by Alex Kingston (River Song) and Matt Smith (The Eleventh Doctor), the game promises to "bring Dr. Who to life." Motion-capture has been used to give cutscenes and characters a more realistic edge.

Gameplay-wise, the BBC describes in a statement something with a distinct, if rather vague, timey-wimey bent. "Gamers must learn to master the complexities of time travel with exceptional time based game play, changes made in one time will impact another creating multiple possibilities and challenging players to solve puzzles across the centuries," it says.

Robert Nashak, EVP of Digital Entertainment at BBC Worldwide, sounds predictably excited. "We're creating these new games for Playstation 3 and Vita with adaptations that will bring the wonder, adventure and madness of Doctor Who to each platform," he said. "Working with a top-tier UK development partner like Supermassive Games demonstrates BBC Worldwide's commitment to create world-class Doctor Who games for fans of the show and gamers alike."

It's reassuring that some of the writers behind the original series have been involved in this project. Whether or not combining this with a fresh studio and some quality voice acting will result in the console outing that really "brings Dr. Who to life" remains to be seen. What exactly is "exceptional time based gameplay," I wonder? Either way, it's not long until we'll find out.

I like the sound of this already. The previous games have been very limited to Wii and DS games and the half-decent Adventure series. Now for a proper console game with real money piled into it!

I'm interested in the timey-wimey gameplay and the option to play as River "unlike me she really doesn't mind shooting people" Song or the Doctor solving all the puzzles! Also, I hope they are more of a challenge than the Adventure games!

Only thing I'm sad at is the PS3/PC only thing. No love for the 360?

Never had a "With thanks to TimeLord" on a News Post before! Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside! :)

Yes, the 360 exception is a little odd, especially since it's on the PC as well.

Still this looks like it could be very interesting. I look forward to finding out more about this.

The Doctor WOULD be a PC gamer wouldn't he?
No, he's too quirky. He'd probably still be rocking the original Game Boy.

Game Boys are cool.

No 360 version? Well, I guess I can cope with a PSP version...

...and it's only on Vita. Bah, it's like they don't even WANT my money.

He's probably rocking the Virtual Boy.

Come to think of it, it wouldn't surprise me if a Virtual Boy was a TARDIS component. The wibbly-headache inducer, perhaps?

Yes, I am disappointed, considering that I only have a PC and a 360, though my PC only has the ability to run games are from 2006 or older. It would cause me as much to upgrade my as it would to buy a PS3, so considering that would cost way to much just to play one game, it will be a long while before, if ever, that I get to play it.

Something tells me that Sony is doing some under the table deals to keep it off of the 360.

While Microsoft is the king of PC operating systems, that doesn't mean that they are a part of all PC games that are made.

If they were a part of it, that would guarantee a spot on the 360. So from what I can tell now, Microsoft had no hand in it, or they couldn't because Sony pulled a rat move and offered the developer extra money to keep it from getting on the 360.

Actually I can more easily imagine the eleventh doctor with a mac, a heavily modified mac that is clearly past its sell by date but a mac none the less (I'm a pc fan so this is how I see his personally not what my preference is).

I'm glad that the next Doctor Who game is being developed for the non wii gaming platforms (shame about it not being released on 360). I think these consoles will be able to help give it beautiful scenery.

My main concern is with game play, I did enjoy the Adventure games but when it comes to a full product which I'll be paying for I will expect something more.

As we haven't seen anything of the game yet apart from that announcement trailer the only thing to do is remain hopeful and await further news.

It's more likely something to do with licencing fees. If it's the same thing that happened with the BBC iPlayer, then Microsoft probably wanted some money up front to put it on XBbox where Sony do not. BBC is pretty strict when it comes to spending money.

You know what this means guys; if the game's characters are the 11th Doctor AND River Song. It means that they will show up [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kokvIMWEuFM&feature=related]. In the game. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTWaa2FCq-M]

Have you seen 'Blink'? That's about 4x more creepy than 'Time Of Angels/Flesh and Stone'!

I like to re-watch 'Blink' every now and then just to give myself chills!

I've seen it, but I think the angels in the cave episode were much more creepy.

First time I watched Blink I was like: "I don't see why people think this episode is so creepy with the angels."

Then came Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone.

Whaaaaaaat?
I crapped myself at most of 'Blink'! Especially the bit just after they are speaking to the Doctor on the laptop and the Angel is right on them!

Although to be fair, this part of 'Time Of Angels' is so nerve racking to watch all the way through!

I honestly don't have super high expectations, I bought the last one for the PC and to be honest the story was mediocre and the gameplay ranged from meh, to frustrating, to horrendous.
