It has recently come to my attention that I would not do well in a dystopian space future. While I would not say that I am gullible, other people who have far more of an understanding of political, social, economic, and military machinations to outclass my own skill and knowledge 9 times out of 9.

Combine that with my inability to quickly learn lingo, and my jealousy of people who have nicer things than myself as well as being easily frustrated, and you can see why EVE was not such a stellar fit for me.

So, thoroughly wiped and with my tail between my legs, I retreated back into the warm, motherly embrace of single player games, and, to scratch my itch of a space simulator, bought X3 Terran Conflict for the bargain price of 15 Euros.

Needless to say, I was exited! I had heard good things about the series and was eager to try my hand. Being the brash fool I am, I instantly looked up what the most powerful, largest, ship in the game was and instantly set my sights on it. In this case, it was the legendary Valhalla M0 class ship, and it made my mouth water. To this end, I installed the X-tended mod to at some point acquire it, after having played and hour of the original.

My insolence was punished, however, as I found myself dropped in the middle of nowhere with a fighter and a capital ship I had no idea how to use effectively and no prompting as to initiating the main 'quest'.

I once again found myself in an undignified state of retreat, uninstalling the daunting mod and going back to the vanilla.

It was my perception that the mod would simply be an upgraded version of the original, and all things related to pacing and such would remain the same, but it seems that this is not the case.

Therefore, I humbly beseech you, oh wise seers of the Escapists, Clerics of the Walkthrough, Deacons of the Point and Clicks, and Masters of the Mouse and Key, direct this impudent and ignorant child unto the path of enlightenment!

Whether they be comprehensive Lets Plays from the Tube Scholars, or easy to comprehend instructions from the Scribes of GameFAQ, or form your own ample knowledge, please fill this empty vessel with your Seed. Your Seed of KNOWLEDGE!

TL;DR (don't blame you)
Help me learn how to play X# Terran Conflict better and when I should install and play the X-Tended mod.

Start as a trader, focus on energy cells whilst using the scout ship to explore the galaxy for new sectors.

As you get more cash focus on higher yield goods whilst upgrading your cargo capacity and getting general upgrades. Your ultimate goal should be Trading Extension Mk III for about 1,000,000 which will let you make your trader automatically trade in the area eventually it will upgrade itself and trade throughout the whole galaxy.

You will also need a jumpdrive for the ship you will usually use as it makes doing missions much easier.

While the trader is doing his magic I bought what was essentially a taxi for doing taxi mission. With a jumpdrive and engine upgrades the missions become an easy source of cash and you can use this to build up a trading fleet.

After a while you can get yourself a space station and then buy a few more. It's good to use tubing to make a huge trading loop that feeds itself so all you need to do is supply it with a few base materials and at the end you get high-profit items like computer chips.

That's where I reached when I stopped. I had a trading fleet, a few ships that auto-explored thanks to some new software and I had a 15 (?) station complex churning out cash.

I may go back to it in the future, there was still shitloads left to do and I had only did a few story missions.

Thank you for your advise, it will be very useful!

However, I do not know how to do any of this, what buttons to press, where to go, hell, I don't even know how to buy equipment and repair my ship!

Maybe you remember where you got the information to do that in the first place?

I don't have the X-Tended mod, but some tips for a newbie to X3 would be:

- Make sure to search sectors thoroughly, there are plenty of free ships lying around that you can capture and then either sell or use as your own.

- Used ships are often a good deal, as even if you don't want the ship in question you can just buy it, repair it back to 100% (most used ships come slightly damaged) and sell it for a net profit.

- Repairing ships at the Shipyard is quite costly, so fix your ship using your Spacesuit's Repair Laser.

- Go to the 'Gameplay' section of the Options and set 'SETA Speed' to 'x10' this will save you a lot of time (IRL anyway)

- Do not under any circumstances enter a sector whose name contains the word 'Xenon'

- The folks at the Egosoft forums [http://forum.egosoft.com/viewforum.php?f=2] can answer just about anything else (especially this thread [http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=162408].)

Believe me, I have tried to fish out some information about this game and have had no success, so thank you very much for the link.

EDIT: Hmm, what an odd way to quote.

you can find information on where the free derelict ships are in X3 TC, also a lot of these ships either sell for a ton (easily 15 million for all of them) and/or they are prototypes and the best ships in that class.

Mr. star fox has the right of it. you could go the combat route but two things. One, enemies scale pretty quickly and if you dont have the income to constantly upgrade and catch up, it will be hard for a beginer who doesnt know how to beat ships that outclass him. Two, a lot of the campaign missions become extremely hard if you have a high combat rank.

also:

-The Terran conflict plot missions provide some pretty good ships and cash, and are not very hard

-there are only 2 places in the universe that sells jumpdrives in the begining i believe, Terracorp (Home of Light system, in argon space by Argon Prime), and OTAS headquarters in Legend of Home. Getting a jumpdrive should be your #1 priority, and it can be transfered to a new ship. as such you should probably set up your base of operations near Argon Prime (it is also highly defensible with no risk of a Xenon invasion and pirates raid rarely)

-This is not a game that will hold your hand. You can easily jump into a system that has a fleet that will annihilate you in the first minutes. Discretion is the better part of valor.

-beware of pirate blastclaws, they dont look like much but their flamethrowers pack one hell of a punch.

-setting up a satelite network is going to be essential for trading. satellites themselves arent TOO expensive once you start getting some income (5k apiece i think), but they are hard to find. You will save yourself quite a headache if you have a few on hand and drop ONE in every system that you come across.

-autopilot is your FRIEND

-in the game options you can change SETA from 6x to 10x.

here are some resources to help you out:

this one shows where the free ships are, has a universe map, and is also a ship/weapon database.

general FAQ

also dont be afraid to post on egosoft forums, the community is actually quite helpful. although they might spout off X3:TC speak not realizing that you dont know what every acronym is

oh and P.S. a Xenon Q will F you up. The difficulty curve for the first...10 hours of the game can be compared to a vertical wall with spikes, but if you stick with it its a blast.

Does the Mk. III trading command extension make the ship completely autonomous, as in you do not even have to set trade routs and such? And does it need to be bought for every ship?

The only input on your end is telling them to start trading (and then, if you wish setting the 'range' that they trade within.)

And yes, Software has to be bought per ship.

That's great!

I hate trading, it is so dreadfully boring.

Agreed, I'm more of a fighting person myself (the only Trading I really do is building factories.)
