Hey all, I've been having a fine time playing games like Starcraft 2 and Super Meat Boy, and thought I'd round it all out with some atmospheric RPG actions with Morrowind. Alas! I own the French version of a game, which isn't such a big deal since it is my native language, but still, I cannot stomach a game unless it is in its intended language.

Is there any way to remedy this proble by switiching the main language to English?

Any help is much appreciated :)

You might have to find a pack of all the UI and sound files. ...Past that I don't really know.

Hey Lemon. Right, first off let me start by saying that Morrowind isn't a massively 'talkie' game. Most of the sound is battle cries and generic greetings, the main bulk of the in-game conversation is purely text based, so you won't actually be missing out on that much. Secondly the only thing I could think of is if you substituted the audio files from an English version of the game onto your installed version, but I don't know if such a simple patch would work - for the record the audio files are roughly 180MB. My last suggestion to you would be contact PoisonUnagi as he's been the voice of all things Morrowind since I've been on the site. He'll be able to give you more definitive answers than me.

Hey Grouchy, thanks for the help. I've played a bit of the game, and sure it is mostly text-based, but still, I would rather that text was in English (yes, I am stupidly picky). I'll message Poison.

I guess I should point out the obvious.

Morrowind now is dirt cheap, I am assuming you are using the PC version, so why not buy it in English from ebay or one of the literally thousands of other sites who could supply you with an English version?

There may be an easier way to change the text to English, lord knows everything that could be done to the PC game has been via mods etc.

I am just confused as to why, if you cannot stomach a game that is not in its original language, did you buy a copy in French in the first place?

Sure, I'll buy it as a last resort, but I may as well try to do it for free. Anyhow, my brother bought the game, so that's why it's in French ^^

oh one thing I forgot to mention and it might be a long shot.
A couple of years ago I bought FIFA locally which turned out to not have English commentary or text (I am in Sweden)
I emailed EA and they offered me an exchange for the English language disc, perhaps you could contact the distributor and see if they are willing to do the same.

Since you own Morrowind legally, you could just download an English version. Pirating isn't pirating if you own an actual copy.

Well I think, as long as you've already bought a game, torrenting it thereafter is fine (I recently lost my fallout 3 disk, so I'm torrenting it so I can play it again), so torrenting an english version is fine, if you want to do that...

But don't torrent if you've not already bought the game, so don't you go pirating games you don't have!

Stop spreading lies.

It IS illegal to do that, even if you own it.

Neither of you are going to stop pirating games that you already own, though, are you?

It's not a lie, if you own some sort of software, it is legal to copy it for personal use and safekeeping. Whether you copy your own or get it somewhere else doesn't matter.

Edit: And no, if I've paid for a game, I'm not going to think twice about downloading it instead of looking for the disc when I want to reinstall it.

It's true. You already bought it and giving that you own it legally there's really no ramifications for downloading it from a torrent site.

It's not legal for the simple fact that the only digital copy you're allowed to have is one that you've made yourself. You're basically downloading someone else's copy of the game.

That depends very much on local legislation, and it's usually not the downloading, but the downloading via torrent that's illegal (since that way you're spreading the software to other people). I don't actually know the French laws regarding it, but they're usually somewhat sane.

I'd look through some mod archives for resources, might be someone's encountered the same problem, and already fixed it. Otherwise, try finding someone with the english version of the game and have them send you the files. If you're lucky it might be as simple as reinstalling it, and selecting another language, but I wouldn't bet too much on that, and you've probably tried it.

dudes,

torrenting the game IS illegal - no matter if you've already bought it. the moment you start downloading it, you are distributing it yourself over the internet (kinda peer2peer) and that afaik is illegal.

doesn't even matter wether you download it completely or just a couple of speech files or even just the goddamn readme.txt - sharing any data without the permission of the rightful owner (or copyright proprietor) ain't a good idea.

edit: argh, I've just seen that Silver already made my point. sorry bout doubleposting :p

If the game is only shared between people who actually own the game, nothing illegal is taking place seeing as having a copy for safekeeping isn't illegal, and which particular disc you have copied doesn't matter, as you paid for the licence to use the software, as well as the software itself, not only the one on your specific disc. With regards to peer to peer sharing, that method in itself is in no way illegal, which is why it has been so hard for the industry to put a stop to torrent websites, because what people share through it is what's illegal, but not the sharing method. If you want to share something that's free to begin with via peer to peer, that's perfectly fine.

Incorrect, You can have a back up copy providing you still have the original disc, torrenting the game after you've lost or sold the game (even if you have a receipt still) is Illegal.

The back up needs to be made from your disc, once that back up has been chewed up by a device, you are legally allowed to throw that copy away and make another single back up, providing you still physically own the original.

You must have the physical disc in your possession to have a back up.
Anything else is considered piracy.

The long arm of the law would stretch into that P2P program you've got on your computer, find that you've torrented it and subsequently shared it amongst others, thats why torrenting is considered piracy and illegal matey.

Savvy?
