So I downloaded KOTOR (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the one person who doesn't know) in the Steam sale a couple of days ago and it started off running fine. Got a little slow when the screen was busy but that was to be expected.
Then it started crashing mostly randomly, but this was only minor.
Then I discovered that whenever I went "outside", so to speak (started with the Undercity on Taris) I suffered from weird glitchy sky (can't describe it - basically imagine if the grid lines that make up the skybox suddenly became real and supposedly had textures) that brought the frame rate crashing down. So that was annoying. It popped up again at the entrance to the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, but not that badly. The main problem however lies in the deathtrap that is the Courtyard.
Trying to get through the civilised areas was bad enough but in the plains surrounding it not only am I getting about 2 seconds' delay between command and action due to a plummeting framerate but also my character's movement is broken (freezing mid-animation often) and often I will tell him to go forward and he will instead move from side to side or teleport to another point in the field.
The irritating thing is that my computer is EASILY inside the specs.
OS: Windows 7 6.1.7600
Processor: 2.2GHz Pentium Dual-Core
RAM: 2GB (total 1.96, available 1.11)
Graphics Card: Intel GMA 4500M (not great, I know)
The only problem I can see is the OS?
I've also slightly screwed up now by trying to manually install an official patch (having turned off Steam's automatic updates) which has resulted in it demanding a CD and probably forcing a reinstall on my part -_-
Any advice is welcome. I'd also like to know how to find and transfer saves, cause it looks like I'm either going to be removing the game in order to reinstall it or moving the save to my other (worse but running XP) computer in order to actually play it.
EDIT: Having got it to scan my computer, it's "warning" me on the graphics card and "failing" me on OS. I worry it will be the former.
