Help with commas?

Ugh. I'd say you got me but this is really just a general rule. If there's no obvious verb for the adverb to "stick" to then I've been taught repeatedly that it just means the sentence is broken and meaningless. It goes that if we want to use however as a conjunction we proceed it with a comma; if we want however as an adverb we do not.

If you have some kind of citable style manual that says otherwise then please show me as I'd be most keen to know for sure.

Oh I don't know, I was truly curious. It reminds of the movie title "She's having a baby". I know the apostrophe is wrong but I can only guess why (possessives and what not).
