Second of all, let's grant that in-universe, there has been "only war" for the last 10,000 years. Let's even grant that there's nothing else of interest going on. That's still leaving out everything that happened prior to that. The history of humanity for instance has three distinct ages before the Imperium, and barring the Age of Strife, they're hardly "only war" scenarios. The eldar weren't waging "only war" for millions of years. The tau were in "only war" until the ethereals, after which their society rapidly changed to be more unified. Thing about 40K is that the universe is terrible, but part of what makes it terrible is that there were periods in its in-universe history where things were distinctly less terrible for pretty much everyone.
"Only war" is a good tagline for a tabletop wargame, but yeah the "reality" of the setting doesn't bear that out. There's always war somewhere, but there's parts of the imperium that haven't seen war firsthand for thousands of years. But that would make for a pretty unintersting battle report.

And I think you can see the problem: even after 8 years of creating lore, events, places and characters, the AoS setting is still incredibly nebulous and vague, and as such hard to get any sort of tangible feel for. There's no scale or connection to any of it.
Yes, it's just too alien. Again, I've not really looked into it much but it sounds like some sort of fever dream rather than a setting to get invested in.

My guess is that this is the fault of trying to have anything. 40k can do this easily: it's set in a galaxy, so any type of planet you can imagine can be the basis for a battlefield.

In WFB, the battlefield is basically anything you might expect to see in real-life Europe, so heavily limited.
There's plenty of biomes outside that area though - jungle (Lustria, the Southlands), wasteland (Chaos Wastes, the Dark Lands), desert (Araby, Nehekhara), etc.

You don't have to cover every little detail leading up to that point (same reason why the LotR films don't cover the Silmarillion), but that's a serious compression of time and lore. And while this is a minor point, it's incorrect to say that the Alliance is on "one part of land" when there's significant geographic distance between its kingdoms, and when the Alliance of WC3 is in a fractured state. Similarly, the orcs aren't on another patch of land, but in internment camps. So you have a status quo, that's been adjusted from another status quo.

So faced with all this history, why start a story this far through its run rather than at the start?



Again, it's a massive simplification. There isn't one "human kingdom," nor has the Horde always existed in this world, etc.

Basically, all it's showing is that if you jump straight to WC3, the story pays a price for it.

All IPs start out with just establishing that X Y and Z are there, and then write the story from there. A theoretical Warcraft 3 movie doesn't need to go into the whole other world and portal and previous wars at all, it could easily get away with vaguely implying it at best. We don't need to know that the Alliance is a bunch of kingdoms separated by a lot of land between them, we don't need to know that the orcs are in internment camps (by Warcraft 3, they aren't anymore anyway), all that is superfluous. Human Kingdom on one side, Orc Kingdom on the other, they both start getting attacked by the undead, go from there. It's not hard to simply set WC3's beginning as ground zero for the movie franchise or does it need several movies to explain how it got to that point. The only difference here between this theoretical Warcraft 3 movie and an entirely new IP is that the former has lore in a another media already. Lore that doesn't need to be relevant to the adaption because the adaption as an adaption has the room to start from scratch.

If you had it your way, you'd want at least one movie showing how President Whitmore rose to power prior to the aliens showing up, with vague hints as to a potential alien incursion. Then another movie which shows the aliens and how they got to the point they're invading planets. Finally, you'd want the third movie, or IRL the actual movie, where the aliens arrive on earth, go over all it's monuments and blast them to smithereens and well, if you've seen it you know the rest.

Independence Day didn't do that because it didn't need to go into the backstory of everything, it just had Whitmore the president already, the aliens arrive, go over the monuments, and blast them with a brief exposition that this is what the aliens do to planets. Done.

In other words, this theoretical Warcraft 3 movie if it followed the games for the most part could just as well have had the orcs having had been in the human world for a while, if not always and the two sides are in at an uneasy peace. Especially since nothing prior to the story of Warcraft 3 the game has any real relevance to anything that happens during and for the most part after it either, which is a big part of why it's a great starting point for newer fans, you don't need to know anything about the previous games to understand what's going on. Being an adaption this theoretical Warcraft 3 movie doesn't have to be a perfect 1 for 1 retelling of the story.

Completely disagree. Okay, maybe not completely, I wasn't a fan of the KhadgarxGarona thing either, but I disagree on every other point, in that:

-Pure evil orcs are a tired cliche at this point. Warcraft orcs didn't start out in shades of grey, but the setting is infinitely better for it. "Good humans" vs. "bad orcs" would be just trite.

-Focusing on war on the expense of character...okay, has that ever worked, like, ever? If there's no reason to be invested in the characters, why care about the war they're fighting in?

What's ironic is that I'd argue that the movie drops the ball on characterization. The orcs are okay, the humans are generally bland.
When someone, who isn't a fan of it already, hears the name "Warcraft" the word they focus on is "War". They expect a war movie. There's two types of movies. Ones that focus on an event and the reaction of the characters to it, and ones that focus on developing the characters and putting personal obstacles in front of them. A war movie would be the former of those two, and why we care about that is because the war is the backdrop. It's almost always about a cast of characters struggling to survive in the horrifying situation that is war while showing nobility and sacrifice, or lack thereof.

This is where Warcraft the movie fails. It takes nearly the entire movie for the actual war to even begin, when it should've started with at least small skirmishes between human and orc war parties and escalated from there. Instead, to put it as simply and briefly as I can it's about one of the orc chiefs going behind the Horde leader's back to try to broker a peace between the humans and orcs, then said chief trying to maintain his clan and dispose of the Horde leader, finally coming the point where they actually start fighting each other pretty much at the end of the movie.

Why say the Avengers worked was because there were several movies prior that focused on the characters that composed it and their personal obstacles so when it came time to do the focus on the event and the reaction of the characters to it part, development had already been done on the characters so the movie could focus on the event, the impending invasion and the reaction of the characters to it for the most part rather than spend time on characterization.

The issue with the Warcraft movie is tried to have it's cake and eat it too, so it tried to have character focus over the event rather than event over the character focus. In other words the movie took so much time focusing on the characters that there was little to no actual war going on during it, and that's what caused it to bomb. Yes, there should be characterization of the major characters, but it shouldn't be at the expense of the war that most people expect to see.

They should've focused on the human characters and world with the orcs being a generic enemy that is attacking for as far as the viewer sees because "I'm evil", occasionally showing off some redeeming aspects like honor and caring about their comrades, and then the next movies taken the time to expand the orcs and give them reasons and sympathetic motivations. By the third movie, Warcraft 3, the expansion for both sides would've already been done and thus from there it's just a matter of playing the two now firmly established factions off of each other. If that followed the Warcraft 3 game story, with a third enemy coming into being to force the two former enemies to work together to survive.

If said third movie is not up to the WC3 game plotline yet, the movie should focus on the fighting finally coming to a head, with the human characters established in the first and the orc character established in the second battling against each other to decide the ultimate fate of the war between humans and orcs. A battle made much much more moving because the previous 2 films had taken the time to establish and characterize the notable human characters and their world, the orc characters and their world, and what each side is fighting for.

In the actual Warcraft movie, the human characters were bland because the orc side all but took over most of the characterization and set building in the movie despite having little to nothing to do with the setting most of the actual movie takes place in. The result being there was no chance for the human characters to expand or to show the world that they lived in that much. The world takes place almost entirely in the human world thus the human characterization makes or breaks the setting ultimately. 9/10ths of the plot involved this "Fel Magic" stuff that could've easily been glossed over, but was made into the main focus on the whole orc side of things because of the portal and other world thing which again didn't need to be there because the movie didn't need to and shouldn't have focused on the orcs.

Establish the world first, characters involved in said world next, then bring in the external threat, then finally expand upon said external threat. This is how you build up and then sake the viewer's curiosity. Sure, most of the stuff that happened in the actual movie might have still happened, but things like the portal and other world, the orc chief's attempted takeover, etc. should've been regulated to a few brief flashbacks at most during the subsequent orc focused movie.

if for no other reason than you need the models for the weird terrain, and it's nicer if your bases match.

I'm generalising, and I might be wrong, but the standard terrain to fight over was standard for a reason.
Oh absolutely. It's enough faff buying all the models without also having to buy umpteen scenery sets, too.

All of that sounds terrible.

First, the orcs are still in internment camps at the start of WC3, the second mission of the Horde prequel campaign involves overrunning one to free Grom.

Second, if your premise is "they both start getting attacked by undead," you're diverging to the point when it isn't an adaptation anymore.

Third, considering that all of this is a dumbed down version of WC3, why would I bother watching it then? Yes, film adaptations usually streamline things from their source material to varying effects, but none of this comes off as appealing.

It's not hard to simply set WC3's beginning as ground zero for the movie franchise or does it need several movies to explain how it got to that point. I can certainly imagine WC3 as ground zero, like I can imagine a lot of things. That doesn't make it a good choice.

Like, seriously, if you're adapting a series of works, how many adaptations don't start at the beginning? Adapting Warcraft from WC3 is shooting yourself in the foot when there's installments leading up to that. So you're either just ignoring them, or relegating them to prequel status.

That's a false equivalance on countless levels.

First, Independence Day is an original work, not an adaptation, so it isn't a good comparison.

Second, if ID was an adaptation, and Emmerich only adapted the third installment, it would be an iffy move as to why. If, in this scenario, Independence Day was a trilogy of novels, and Emmerich adapted book 3, then you'd get a lot of unhappy people, and I doubt the film would work as well.

Third, Independence Day doesn't really match Warcraft in a key area, in that the first film tells things entirely from the human POV. The Harvesters are faceless (literally, for much of the movie), and only exist as an enemy force - same principle as the Martians from War of the Worlds, they exist as obstacles for the humans to overcome/survive. This doesn't apply to the orcs in Warcraft. It doesn't even apply to the Burning Legion or the Scourge.

If you're making a big budget movie, you're not making it "for the fans." If you're relying on fans knowing backstory, everyone except those fans is going to be lost.

I disagree with that assessment. The former doesn't contradict the latter. If anything, they go together.

Since you've already used Independence Day, let's use that as an example. You have the event (aliens arrive), the reaction (Whitmore's indecision, David's intelligence, Russel's panic, Hiller's cockiness), characters further reacting to events (cities destroyed, fighters destroyed), and characters changing by the end (Hiller marries Jasmine, Whitmoore finds his footing, David reunites with his ex-wife, Russel's son finally looks up to him). Warcraft, if anything, suffers because it lacks such character development. It's got the war part, it falls flat on character development. And if you don't believe me, name a character that actually has an arc in the film. Some characters come close (certainly Garona's fortunes have changed by the film's end), but actual arcs? Not really.

Even disaster films understand this. It's part of why I consider Deep Impact superior to Armageddon. Both deal with an incoming asteroid, but the former takes time to flesh out its characters, the latter? Not so much bar a trite love interest thing.

I don't see any of that as a problem. You can have all the war in the world, it doesn't matter if the characters aren't interesting.

The Avengers worked because of films leading up to it. Gee, it's almost like there should be films leading up to WC3...

Also, by your analogy, the actual Warcraft film should have spent more time on characterization so that by the climax, that could have been done. And I don't think the Avengers is a good analogy for another reason, namely that the Avengers only ever shows us a POV of one faction (SHIELD), bar Loki. The chitauri...seriously, what even ARE the chitauri? What's their culture? Why are they attacking? I'm sure the MCU wiki has the answers, but the point is that the orcs aren't chitauri, and if you're making them the equivalent, you're removing a key part of Warcraft. Even when the orcs were straight-up villains (WC1/2), we still saw things from their POV.

Well, by all rights, WC3 should be the fifth movie, and if you wanted to adapt WC3, you'd have to adapt it into numerous movies (five to do the full job, maybe trimming it down to four), but I can't see your plan working. Orcs are a cliche. If you're waiting before going the "our orcs are different!" trope, you're stumbling on the first hurdle.

I agree that the film suffers from a dearth of worldbuilding, but you're basically borrowing from Peter to pay Paul.

Seriously, what's the viewer more likely to be interested in though? Humans from yet another stock medieval setting, or orcs from another world? Bearing in mind that most reviewers preferred the orc characters to the human ones, so focusing on the humans more strips the film from what few redeeming features it had.

Doesn't matter. You have to look far into the background of the events between WC2 and WC3 to have any idea of this. Once again, it's irrelevant.

Considering that's exactly what happens in WC3, no, I'm not. The orcs run with their tails between their legs while the humans are attacked by a relentless undead army in the game. It's a microscopically small leap from there to have the undead just be attacking both as the focus of the story and still be a faithful adaption.

Why would you ever bother watching any adaption of anything you like ever? Because you're fixated on the story of Warcraft, so you want near perfect 1 to 1 series of movie adaptions that explains everything leading up to Warcraft 3, even though it's not at all necessary to make a great adaption of Warcraft 3 the game.

For a famous example, the Lord of the Rings. It took about 15 minutes or so to explain all of the details necessary the audience needed to know to get into the story. Boom! We knew who the villain was, the significance of the One Ring, why destroying it was so important, and the story started at the Shire from there. It didn't need to spend 2 or 3 movies explaining about Sauron and the Ring and going through the events of the Hobbit, it would've been a waste of time and only the most diehard purists cared.

It's the same with this theoretical WC3 movie, except that it's even simpler than that. The thing would probably barely even have to spend 5 minutes explaining about the world and the orc and human factions. What matters is this: There's an Alliance of Human Kingdoms, there's an Orc Horde, they fought each other at some point. Just establish that and from there take a bit of time to establish the setting of the humans and orcs, how they live and such. Then the Undead show up and the orcs and humans have to fight against them. There, you've got your perfectly good adaption and it didn't dumb down anything.

It's a great comparison, you just don't want to acknowledge that it is because it would completely destroy your own point. Just like Independence Day, an original work, didn't have to show a bunch of stuff that led to the situation the movie found itself in, this theoretical Warcraft 3, a non-original work, wouldn't need to show the orc arrival to Azeroth and the subsequent 2 wars because it doesn't have any relevance to nor is required to understand the story of a movie that started with Warcraft 3. In both cases all that needs to be done is establish the world, establish the two forces in this case Human Kingdoms and Orc Horde, establish that they fought before, and go from there. Everything before that could be very easily relegated to the first 10 minutes or a few lines or flashbacks at some point later on.

We wouldn't be having this discussion if Warcraft was a movie first and started with Warcraft 3. Ask yourself this: If Warcraft was a movie first with no adaption would all the portal other world and 2 wars be needed to tell this theoretical Warcraft 3 movie? The answer is no. It does apply to the orcs in Warcraft and especially the Scourge and the Burning Legion. The orcs were something that only existed as an enemy force for the space of 2 and a half games, and that was fine. Then in something covered only in the novels leading to the third game most of the Horde did an almost complete 180 and became more or less peaceful instead of the bloodthirsty maniacs they started as. Essentially becoming so alien to their original characterization they were effectively an entirely different faction in an old faction's skin.

As for the Scourge, it didn't exist until Warcraft 3 and the Burning Legion had very little presence beyond "demons exist in Warcraft and there's this warlock trying to take advantage of them." Both of them would be relevant as the enemy in this theoretical Warcraft 3 movie but there's zero need to make a bunch of movies to establish them as anything beyond that because they effectively didn't exist before then anyway.

Nope, it's an adaption, it just bypasses superfluous stuff that has no bearing on anything that happens in this theoretical Warcraft 3 movie. "The orcs have been there for a while" simply leaves room for the fans to infer the events of the few couple games happened while the newbies just accept it, while "the orcs have always been there" changes absolutely nothing about the situation this theoretical WC3 movie opens with when compared to the WC3 game itself except for the origin of the orcs. The newbies wouldn't care and any sensible fan would just accept it as a concession of the adaption and move on.

They are complete opposites. The former is a bunch of characters are thrown into an event and the viewer has to figure how what those characters are like via how they react to the event. The latter is the characters are shown to the viewer first and then grow and evolve due to the personal obstacles they have to fight through. The former is event first, characterization follows while the latter if character first event follows.

Warcraft, if anything, suffers because it lacks such character development. It's got the war part, it falls flat on character development. And if you don't believe me, name a character that actually has an arc in the film. Some characters come close (certainly Garona's fortunes have changed by the film's end), but actual arcs? No, less time on characterization overall. The orcs staying just generic bad guys for the first film at least would've given room for the humans and their world to develop. Focusing on the war would've served as a backdrop to the human character development that did happen. Then the second film would've focused on the orc side of things and given them a chance to develop beyond simply being generic bad guys. Then the third movie would've had the room to develop both beyond what had been established and play them off each other. And I don't think the Avengers is a good analogy for another reason, namely that the Avengers only ever shows us a POV of one faction (SHIELD), bar Loki. The chitauri...seriously, what even ARE the chitauri? What's their culture? Why are they attacking? I'm sure the MCU wiki has the answers, but the point is that the orcs aren't chitauri, and if you're making them the equivalent, you're removing a key part of Warcraft.
The Chitauri were the generic bad guys that Loki had gotten from Thanos to help conquer the planet for him. This is explained early on. The Chitauri are the cusp of the conflict that the whole movie spends building towards, the final obstacle that the Avengers have to deal with to resolve the plot. It was an epic fight to close out the movie and the Chitauri didn't need characterization, just like the orcs in the actual Warcraft movie and in the first couple games didn't need any.

Had the movie focused upon the humans and the setting with the orcs being this mysterious aggressive evil force, the movie would've been able to make compelling human characters and an interesting entertaining epic war. Then the next movie would've done the same with the orcs, rounding things out and the human characters that did appear would've already been interesting because they had already had time to develop.

Bearing in mind that most reviewers preferred the orc characters to the human ones, so focusing on the humans more strips the film from what few redeeming features it had.

Focusing on the humans would have allowed the world to be fleshed out more and set the stage for the orcs to be expanded upon in the next entry. It wouldn't strip one of the few redeeming features the actual Warcraft movie had because that redeeming feature only existed due to focusing on the orcs instead of the humans, an issue that would've been negated simply by focusing on the humans instead of the orcs. We'd be saying the exact opposite if that happened but because the film was treating the orcs as the big bad evil faction that's killing the humans because they're bloodthirsty maniacs... as far as the viewer sees we don't care, The reason we care that the human characters are bland in the Warcraft movie is because the film wastes it's time on the orc faction when it hadn't even developed the humans yet. In any story there needs to be a big bad evil threat that doesn't need the character development so the other has room to breathe.

Then the second movie would give the big bad evil reasons for doing what they are doing and expand them in general, allowing us to look back at the previous movie and think "oh! So THAT is why they did that!" Character development is a precious resource that can't afford to be wasted and the actual Warcraft movie wasted it by having it backwards and focusing on the orcs.

It's a microscopically small leap from there to have the undead just be attacking both as the focus of the story and still be a faithful adaption.
No, it isn't. If you have the Scourge attacking the Alliance and Horde at the same time, this means that:

-You're operating on a compressed timetable - the Scourge doesn't really show its full strength until about halfway through the Alliance campaign. So that severely compresses buildup, and Arthas's fall.

-It removes any sense of subterfuge in the Scourge - Plague of Undeath? Gone. Cult of the Damned? Irrelevant. The Alliance's impotence? Non-existent.

-This also affects the Horde - it changes the entire context of them leaving the Eastern Kingdoms. Medivh becomes less of an insgitagor in that if the Horde's being attacked by the Scourge, they don't need Medivh to point them west, they've got the motivations they need. This further changes the dynamics between Thrall and Grom, as there's no a clear threat bar a more insidious ones (Grom senses the Legion long before they appear directly), and Thrall's no longer caught offguard by human survivours in Kalimdor.

You can follow the bare bones plotline with this, but the entire context is changed in doing so.

Why would you ever bother watching any adaption of anything you like ever? It's not "dumbed down" it's skipping over the parts that aren't actually important to tell the story, just like as in my previous example how President Whitmore rose to power and how the aliens turned into a race of planet wreckers isn't important to tell the story of Independence Day.
Well, I watched every Harry Potter movie despite them being universally worse than the books, so you tell me.

It's possible to get great works that are poor adaptations (e.g. Starship Troopers, The Hobbit trilogy), but that's a different point. Here's some issues with what you're suggesting:

1: If we treat Warcraft as an overall narrative extending from WC1 to Dragonflight, starting off with WC3 is starting an adaptation a fair way into this story. There's no getting around that.

2: Ergo, you're shooting yourself in the foot, because you're forced to either ignore what comes before, or compress it.

3: You're jeprodizing the ability to tell those stories, because you're either skipping over them, or relegating them to prequel status.

You bring up Independence Day, but what you're suggesting is something similar to starting with Resurgence, and making ID1 a prequel. Is it possible to start with Resurgence and get the gist of what happened beforehand? Yeah, probably. Would I recommend doing so? Even ignoring the downgrade in quality, I wouldn't.

Part of the "dumbed down" issue is also that it's easier to adapt WC1-BtDP and improve their stories through adaptation, whereas it's much harder to see a WC3 adaptation improving on the source material. It's part of why I have no interest in a Mass Effect movie or TV series, because I don't see the point in making an adaptation that's almost certainly going to be of inferior quality, and wouldn't distinguish itself.

Because you're fixated on the story of Warcraft, so you want near perfect 1 to 1 series of movie adaptions that explains everything leading up to Warcraft 3, even though it's not at all necessary to make a great adaption of Warcraft 3 the game.
I never said there had to be a 1:1 adaptation, it's rare to get a 1:1 adaptation of anything, and it's silly to demand as such.

For a famous example, the Lord of the Rings. It took about 15 minutes or so to explain all of the details necessary the audience needed to know to get into the story. Boom! We knew who the villain was, the significance of the One Ring, why destroying it was so important, and the story started at the Shire from there. It didn't need to spend 2 or 3 movies explaining about Sauron and the Ring and going through the events of the Hobbit, it would've been a waste of time and only the most diehard purists cared.

It's the same with this theoretical WC3 movie, except that it's even simpler than that. The thing would probably barely even have to spend 5 minutes explaining about the world and the orc and human factions. What matters is this: There's an Alliance of Human Kingdoms, there's an Orc Horde, they fought each other at some point. Just establish that and from there take a bit of time to establish the setting of the humans and orcs, how they live and such. Then the Undead show up and the orcs and humans have to fight against them. There, you've got your perfectly good adaption and it didn't dumb down anything.
-LotR isn't the best equivalent. Could you do what you're suggesting? Yes, potentially, but a better equivalent would be the first 15 minutes recapping something like the War of the Ancients. The difference is that apart from The Hobbit, there's no direct work to adapt pre-LotR. There's no "War of the Last Alliance" to adapt for instance. This isn't the case for Warcraft. Prior to 3, by all rights, you have 4 movies worth of adaptations that you could adapt first.

-Your outline is already dumbing stuff down. If your premise of WC3 is that "orcs and humans exist, undead turn up, they have to fight them," you have a far simpler, less interesting story than WC3, and you're diverging from what happens in the game. FFS, in WC3, the Alliance and Horde don't even fight the undead together until the final campaign of the game.

It's a great comparison, you just don't want to acknowledge that it is because it would completely destroy your own point. Just like Independence Day, an original work, didn't have to show a bunch of stuff that led to the situation the movie found itself in, this theoretical Warcraft 3, a non-original work, wouldn't need to show the orc arrival to Azeroth and the subsequent 2 wars because it doesn't have any relevance to nor is required to understand the story of a movie that started with Warcraft 3. In both cases all that needs to be done is establish the world, establish the two forces in this case Human Kingdoms and Orc Horde, establish that they fought before, and go from there. Everything before that could be very easily relegated to the first 10 minutes or a few lines or flashbacks at some point later on.

No, it doesn't apply. You can't compare the orcs to the Harvesters in the "faceless" aspect. In ID1, we never see anything from the Harvesters' POV, in ID2, we see things from their POV at the very start, and that's about it. This has never been true of the orcs - they're literally "faced" by the Alliance, we play stuff from their POV, they're comprehensible in a way the Harvesters aren't.

The same is true of the Scourge and Burning Legion. We play as the Scourge, and even when we aren't, there's distinct Scourge/Legion characters that exist. The only Harvester "character" that exists is the queen, and by her nature, she's incomprehensible. The Harvesters can't even communicate with humans except through using human puppets.

As said again and again, they wouldn't be lost because everything that comes before the theoretical Warcraft 3 movie could be very easily explained in a very short time if it needs to be explained at all. The war, such as it is, isn't the be all and end all of character development. Character development begins at the very start of the movie for Durotan, since he's put in the unenviable position of Gul'dan having saved his son, but having used fel magic to do so, which is a microcosm for the orcs as a whole.

You can have the greatest war movie in the world, you can have a war that runs the entire time, that doesn't matter if the characters aren't interesting. It's what distinguishes something like Independece Day (enjoyable characters) with Battle: Los Angeles - both are alien invasion movies, only one of them has any characters of note. The Warcraft movie does a good job of developing its orc characters, just not its human ones.

That's hypothetical. Could it work? Sure. But it's taking a big risk.

I also don't buy that a film only has time to characterize one side during a conflict. Look at Avatar for instance. Both the humans and na'vi are characterized and developed through the entire runtime, and if you think that's a stretch, bear in mind that Warcraft (the movie) and Avatar are very similar in premise (alien species flees dying world to colonize another; the invaders are much more powerful than the natives, but the natives are able to band together and are able to drive the invaders back, at least temporarily, aided by one of the aliens going rogue and aiding the indigenous population).

I disagree that "these guys are evil" are what makes a good war movie ipso facto. Plenty of war movies/TV series humanize both sides and do so to the story's betterment - Band of Brothers, Enemy at the Gates, Animatrix,** Henry V, etc.*

*Not that Henry V is a war movie, but it does humanize both the English and French - the Battle of Agincourt is presented as something horrific for everyone involved. If you only humanize one side, the impact is halved.

**In the sense that both the humans and machines are humanized, and this is all done in less than an hour. By the war's end, no side has the moral high ground.

Okay, sure, but again, this is a hypothetical. You're taking the risk that people will wait an entire movie to see the other side fleshed out. And the premise relies on the old "evil monsters invade."

The reviewers preferred the orc characters because they were the main focus of the movie. Focusing on the humans would have allowed the world to be fleshed out more and set the stage for the orcs to be expanded upon in the next entry. It wouldn't strip one of the few redeeming features the actual Warcraft movie had because that redeeming feature only existed due to focusing on the orcs instead of the humans, an issue that would've been negated simply by focusing on the humans instead of the orcs. We'd be saying the exact opposite if that happened but because the film was treating the orcs as the big bad evil faction that's killing the humans because they're bloodthirsty maniacs... as far as the viewer sees we don't care, The reason we care that the human characters are bland in the Warcraft movie is because the film wastes it's time on the orc faction when it hadn't even developed the humans yet. In any story there needs to be a big bad evil threat that doesn't need the character development so the other has room to breathe.

Then the second movie would give the big bad evil reasons for doing what they are doing and expand them in general, allowing us to look back at the previous movie and think "oh! So THAT is why they did that!" Character development is a precious resource that can't afford to be wasted and the actual Warcraft movie wasted it by having it backwards and focusing on the orcs.
Again, hypotheticals. In an alternate scenario, we'd be complaining that the film waited too long to focus on the orcs.

The problem with your proposal is that:

1: It alienates half the fanbase by focusing on only one faction.

Why make WC3 the first film? Why not, say, WoW: The Mists of Pandaria or whatever?

Anyhoo, I think the orcs coming from another world via magic (and daemons being involved) is kinda important. In retrospect, and knowing that the original movie wasn't successful enough, it's tempting to say they should have done WC1 and run it as a 50's invasion movie. Start with human PoV, strange goings on, king and his advisors discuss strange goings on, meet with orc character who explains what's going on, big battle where invasion is held off, the end. Dod dot dot question mark.
