Hentai VS Ecchi Anime, Where is the border?

I have begun to watch a lot of Anime and found a lot of those that had the "Ecchi" catagory...
A few of them took a mature look at sex, though others treated it like an easy fan service...

Then i got through one specific series.

Im Talking about The "Kiss X sis" Series...

Once i had watched that to the end i thought to myself...
"Was that... Anime, or did i just watch Softcore Hentai?"

I wont argue weather the series is good or not, its just that i got interested in the question,
"Where does the border go?"
Is it as easy just so say "If there is sex in it" or is it more refined...

Hentai is porn. Ecchi is just erotic images. Upskirt, camel toe, and suggestive stuff. Hentai is when its actual sex, or sex like thing, ie penetration.

I think that the old "racy versus porn" debate comes into play. Ecchi is definitely the racy kind, and I'm sure there's a lot of overlap, so it's hard to define.

I'd say that, as a rule of thumb, if the anime tries to avoid showing anything you wouldn't see in a R-rated movie then it's ecchi. If it doesn't, hentai.

well I guess if it shows genitalia it counts as hentai (elven lied showed just about everything but genitals and it was called ecchi)
though I guess that it's always blurred in japan and only uncensored when shipped overseas.

Ahem... I watched the whole series of Kiss X Sis and oddly enough, no nudity, I was expecting it by the 3rd episode based on the premise alone but yeah its weird.
Though one scene they do get it on (One of the OVA's), its like Barbie and Ken except more suggestive.

I believe the difference is that Hentai would be considered pornographic while Ecchi would not. While Ecchi is certainly sexual at times, it doesn't get into anything explicit.

Weird doesn?t equal bad. How does any of that lead you to believe Bible Black has a bad story?
