Here's Your First Look at Paul Rudd in Ant-Man

Scott Lang looks ready for mischief in first look at Marvel's next big hero

While it looks like we'll have to wait awhile to see what the first "new" Marvel hero set to debut after Avengers: Age of Ultron looks like in costume, the studio has released the first official shot of what Paul Rudd's Scott Lang will look like in his civilian identity as a burglar operating in San Francisco.

The film only yesterday Peyton Reed, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136910-Ant-Man-Production-Grows-And-Shrinks-In-San-Francisco] with original cast members Rudd, Michael Douglas (as "original" Ant-Man Hank Pym), Corey Stoll and Evangeline Lily joined by new players including Judy Greer, hip-hop star T.I., Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale, Wood Harris and John Slattery. Interestingly, it is being presumed that Slattery will be reprising his role as the older Howard Stark (Iron Man's dad) from Iron Man 2. If so, it's plausible he may be seen in flashbacks as an associate of Pym, as the elder Stark is supposed to be dead in the present of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

First appearing as scientist who discovers how to radically alter his physical size in an Outer Limits-style story by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1962's Tales to Astonish #27, Dr. Pym was upgraded to the costumed superhero Ant-Man (who retains full-sized strength even when shrunk to the size of an insect) a year later and became a founding member of The Avengers. In the film, a now-older Pym will draft the younger Lang (Rudd) to become a new Ant-Man in order to stop the villain Yellow Jacket (Stoll) from using the technology for evil. The film was originally being directed by Edgar Wright, who departed the project [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134763-Edgar-Wright-No-Longer-Directing-Marvels-Ant-Man] three months ago over creative differences.

I like Scott Lang a lot, so I am kind of glad he's the main protag as opposed to Hank. Here's hoping we get a fun reference to Eric O'Grady in there at some point and Casey Lang has some kind of role to play in this or a future film in the franchise. Casey is one of my favorite super heroins Marvel has.

I expect him to go looking for his uncle's killer and make jokes about small knives.

The fact that he's not Hank is a huge point in his favour.

I think it's cool that they're possibly making connections between Pym and Howard Stark, and I'm glad it's not taking place in New York (also possibly). Best to keep some space between heroes, instead of a bunch of big names in one city like the comics.

I think the plot will go as something like-

Pym is working with Not-yet-Yellow Jacket on Ant-Man tech.
Not-yet-Yellow Jacket decides to take the tech for himself.
Lang tries stealing Ant-Man stuff for a quick pay day while Soon-to-be-Yellow Jacket is more successfully stealing Ant-Man stuff.
Pym is determined to get stuff back and enlists would be thief, Lang, to help him in lieu of jail time.
Shrinky stuff happens.
Lang gets flirty with Pym's daughter.

Every time I see news on this I get my enthusiasm raised... and then remember it won't be focusing on Hank Pym as Ant-Man. The Marvel films have a good track record of being good films, so I'm sure this will be entertaining at the very least, but it's certainly not going to be the Ant-Man film I was hoping for.

The more I see of this the more I'm honestly pondering what in God's name this is going to be about, and not in the fun speculative way but in the confused ponderous way:

-What's going to happen when/if YJ steals the tech? Is someone going to become Goliath and go Stay-Puffed Marshmallow Man on NY?

-Where the hell is Janet, is she dead or something? Why would Marvel pull that?

-Are we seriously going to sit through "Dad hates jerk guy daughter likes?"

-Who are all the other people going to be?

-How old is Cassie? Who's playing her? Are we looking at the potential Young Avengers? Will it founded by Scott, AKA AM actually is a founding member of "a" Avengers?
