HeroClix Fights Back From Beyond The Grave

Just like in a real superhero story, the death of the HeroClix Collectible Miniatures Game [http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/] may only be a temporary setback.

WizKids [http://www.topps.com/] in order to focus on products being developed at its New York office. However, the company said it would attempt to "pursue strategic alternatives so that viable brands and properties, including HeroClix, can continue without noticeable disruption."

Those efforts may meet with close-to-home success, as former WizKids executives Jake Theis and Justin Ziran announced today the formation of Piñata Games and their intention to acquire control of the HeroClix game. In a recent interview with GamingReport [http://www.gamingreport.com/article.php?sid=25923&mode=thread&order=0], Theis, WizKids' former manager of brand development, expressed optimism for the future of the game, saying, "I can't imagine such a wildly popular game disappearing."

"We have more than 6,000 visitors to our site, and are preparing for a huge retailer support push that will culminate the weekend of Dec. 5-7 at core hobby stores around the globe," he continued. "We're calling the weekend-long event 'Calling All Clix,' and the premise is simple, if you love the game and want to show support, get your butt out to a hobby store and tell retail."

Funding for the acquisition is expected to come at least in part from the "Upper Deck [http://www.saveheroclix.com/], so we bring a unique perspective to the table."

But a second company, statement [http://catalystgamelabs.com/] by majority owner Loren Coleman, an offer has already been tendered to Topps. "Catalyst has demonstrated our ability to manage large and important intellectual properties," Loren said. "We will bring the same excitement and care to the HeroClix, Pirates and other WizKids' brands. We've made our initial offer, and look forward to a successful resolution."

It appears likely that HeroClix will survive the loss of WizKids; the only question at this point appears to be who will take home the big prize. Catalyst has no experience with collectible miniatures, but it is an established company, which would presumably give it a big advantage over the upstart Piñata. Any HeroClix fans have a favored horse in this race?

About 60% of The Escapist's founders were hard-core Heroclix fanatics for the first 4-5 expansions. We were ordering miniatures to the office by the crate-load -- no exaggeration.

It all went wrong when they declared the first set(s) illegal for tournament play; a terrible, money-grubbing move that destroyed the collectible value of the old figures.

Nevertheless, count me as part of the Save Heroclix movement. It's a great game.

I guess that explains why my editors keep making me write HeroClix stories.

I'm a bit mystified as to why Topps chose to give WizKids the axe. Everything I've read (which admittedly isn't what you'd call comprehensive) seems to indicate that WizKids in general, and HeroClix in particular, were successful ventures. So why pull the plug?

I still have the CoH/CoV figures. Ghost Widow is great for 84 points.

We are selling the HALO figures for £1.99 for 4 though.

I'm glad to see someone's covering this; the Clix system is a good one for gaming (dumping paper charts and character sheets, yay!) and I know someone who sculpted freelance for WizKids back in the day.

I'm hoping for Catalyst. Despite the fact that they have no experience with collectible games, they have a great history. They have revitalized Shadowrun and MechWarrior both.

Oh and WizKids, previous to being bought by Topps, spent money they did not have. Once Topps bought them, they inherited that debt and it just finally caught up to them once Topps started checking the books and realizing their was no money in WK.
