Dakkagor said:Funnily enough the Gamergate threads prior to the complete censorship were doing a good job of policing themselves and reporting and mocking any idiotic posts asking for doxxing or death threats.Mr.Doh said:My point is that as long as 4chan doesn't control its idiot misogynists, people will keep treating it as the Internet bogeyman, whether it deserves that treatment or not. I'm not surprised the mods have finally dropped the hammer, even though they may have dropped it on the wrong people.

Me: Hey 4chan, how you doing? How's Gamergate these days?

Me: Yeah. . .about that. So, I saw an article on the business insider this morning, and well, I don't think it paints you in a very good light. Dare I say it, it makes you look like deplorable douches. Now I understand that not all the heads speak for each other, in-fact that as a community there is a wide range of both good and bad people (like most communities) but do you think you could deal with that head that keeps being such a sexist asshole all the time? I'll just post the link down here:

Brilliant. Simply brilliant.Dakkagor said:STFU SJW SHE WON'T SCREW YOU FOR IT
Not once has 4chan ever gave a shit about its "reputation" from outsiders. In fact, they like it being a bad rep because it makes less "normalfags" wander in.Battenberg said:Brilliant. Simply brilliant.Dakkagor said:STFU SJW SHE WON'T SCREW YOU FOR IT
Seriously though I think the damage is done as far as 4Chan's reputation goes. Reddit too for that matter. They are the embodiment of the phrase "this is why we can't have nice things".
Which is kind of my point. They may not care about their reputation but if the world in general views them as a bunch of angry, prejudiced nerds who lock themselves away to spread hateful messages on the internet then that is the sort of person they'll attract. In my experience angry people don't get on well with anyone but other angry people REALLY rile them up. Eventually the people on 4chan who enjoyed the anarchic state the site is constantly in but aren't comfortable with personally attacking people will be forced out or become targets themselves.Thorn14 said:Not once has 4chan ever gave a shit about its "reputation" from outsiders. You'd be surprised. I've met plenty of cool people on 4chan, mostly on the smaller or lesser known boards, but /vg/ as well.Battenberg said:Which is kind of my point. Isn't that kind of indicative of the problem?Thorn14 said:Not once has 4chan ever gave a shit about its "reputation" from outsiders. In fact, they like it being a bad rep because it makes less "normalfags" wander in.
My point wasn't that ALL of 4chan is bad, it was that it's reputation will attract bad people which will likely lead to those cool people being forced out or just having to go elsewhere. Maybe they'll find somewhere else as "anything goes" as 4chan and start again (although that runs the risk of the cycle starting over) or maybe people like that will just end up becoming massively disillusioned with internet forums in which case everyone's losing out.Thorn14 said:You'd be surprised. I've gotten a great guild in Star Trek Online thanks to /vg/ I would not have gotten anywhere else.
4chan uses that word for every person. Good or bad. A person might go and say "Yeah I'm a drawfag on 4chan" and mean absolutely zero offense. Its just part of the culture. Don't like it, don't go.Don Incognito said:Isn't that kind of indicative of the problem?Thorn14 said:Not once has 4chan ever gave a shit about its "reputation" from outsiders. Which is why 4chan would rather be left alone above everything else. Anon at 4chan hate it when it gets attention because it gets a bunch of people who need to lurk moar.Battenberg said:My point wasn't that ALL of 4chan is bad, it was that it's reputation will attract bad people which will likely lead to those cool people being forced out or just having to go elsewhere. Okay, I won't. But, as I said, that is indicative of the problem 4chan has with the culture at-large.Thorn14 said:4chan uses that word for every person. Good or bad. 4chan actually has a pretty good diverse amount of boards and depending on the board you visit there's completely different cultures, almost like changing a site (They also have a pretty wide variety of attendees).Don Incognito said:Okay, I won't.
