KILL IT WITH FIRE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhaT78i1x2M&list=WLE0B2D9FFC10227B5&index=8

it's pretty much undeniable that retro gaming has become trendy; do you think the kind of elitism and hunger for digging up the past observed amongst music fiends/tragics (i.e. their neverending pursuit to uncover music that NO ONE ELSE KNOWS ABOUT, thus removing what made being a fan of pop music fun in the first place-- see last.fm for examples) will happen to video games?

has it already happened?

is claiming to have played all the nes mega man games the gaming equivalent of namedropping shitty old italian disco groups?

is yahtzee the original gaming hipster?

i'm scared :(

Oh give it a rest.

...wait I need to say more not to get a warning?

Well, ok then. You know that if someone has a hipster attitude with anything, it doesn't affect you in any way or form? Gamers are already generally arrogant, try to be cool by bashing popular title (see CoD for example, for the record I'm not really interested in CoD, but don't feel the need to constantly bash it), and all that hipster-y thing. Indie development is a great thing that has happened to gaming, it's nice to have an alternative to big-house AAA games that are basically consisting of sequels and games trying to mimick more popular games by, say, trying to fit a lackluster multiplayer where it doesn't belong or some such.

But mainly, I just don't see what you're so concerned about.

I have no idea what the topic is about...

But that movie is some silly pretentious fluff, maybe it's the new soap opera direction.

that movie looks awesome.

OT: it kind of seems like you have been 'burned'' by hipsters. are the cool kids in your class into underground music, and tease you? or did you hear them listening to an awesome song that they wouldn't tell you the name of?

it seems like you have a vendetta.

indie (read as: INDEPENDENT) games are just as important as the AAA titles, and i don't think there is any elitism to that. quite the opposite. if anything, playing a COD game with a budget of 500 million dollars seems elite-st. what was the question again?

Yeah, I really wish that the indie developers would knock it off with all those fresh new ideas, don't they know all we want are our yearly installments of the same old tried and true franchises!? Pshaw.

Well, I think that movie looks good.
It would be nice to see the emotions of a developer captured.

Oh please. Indie developers are just independent studios. Not linked with huge corporations. Saying video games being taken over by hipsters is like saying anything not related to Walmart are "hipster" companies.

It is the small business that is the majority. Indies are making a comeback in spotlight after years of a monopoly. The industry is seeing a new golden age, not a take over. The introduction of platforms like steam led to higher accessibility to a market where retail was being strangled by mega companies.

Its a golden age. In short:
Sorry, I didn't mean for the video link to imply that I was attacking independent developers specifically, or that simply because the word "indie" appears in the title I had mistakenly assumed that it meant something other than independent development studio. I guess I just wanted to draw attention to that dude's epic mutton chops and Ray-Ban prescription lenses. The movie itself looks absurdly overwrought, though. Most of these guys are just screwing around in Game Maker rehashing dated platformers with a crappy physics engine thrown in.

I was actually trying to express a creeping feeling I have that some gamers' attitudes towards games are changing into that of an exclusive club mentality. Gamers are taking sides, with CoD games on one half and Suda 51 fans on the other, to use but one example.

I'm not very good at getting my point across, sorry if I confused you :)

Hipsters don't exist. They are made up. If someone REALLY was a hipster, they would be following a trend of a stereotypical hipster, therefor nullifying the point.
