"His Dark Materials" coming to HBO

If you aren't familiar with that title, you might recall a 2007 film called The Golden Compass, which adapted the first book in Phillip Pullman's series "His Dark Materials".

Anyways, the season one teaser for the HBO series just dropped.


Speaking personally, I don't know what to make of this right now. I read the books and enjoyed them, and I'm hoping that a series can do more justice to them than a feature length film might, but...I don't know, maybe they just didn't give anyone enough screentime in the teaser for me to get excited for it.

Lyra's hair is the wrong colour, series ruined.

Nah, the books were among my favourites when I was young and so I'm cautiously optimistic. If nothing else, a TV series has time to breathe and explore Pullman's world, rather than try to cram a long and detailed book into a single film's running time.

Hopefully the hilariously brazen anti-religious messaging and nightmarish subtext of the books is kept intact.

Meh.

Not a fan of the books. Which is odd, because if you want to write a story that critiques religion, I'd usually be down for it, but the books have the subtlety of a jackhammer while doing so. Also Lyra's annoying. Like, really annoying.

I hope they don't butcher the themes and needlessly censor it like they did with the film(cutting out the downer ending of the book) but OTOH, I'd really like them to clean up the religious critiques in book 3. I'm not religious and I despise fundamentalists of any stripe, but damn if some of the messaging in the third book wasn't painfully Heavy Handed.

That and the third book felt incredibly sloppy as far as why and what was happening and really needed an editor.

I still wonder who they've got voicing Iorek. They've announced (and shown) so many of the other casting choices, its strange they've not revealed him. Half makes me wonder if they've got Ian McKellen back for it

in book 3 or just at least try to find a better way to pull it off?

Not so much sloppy for me, as rushed. Also the least subtle of the lot. Because if you haven't got the clue by now that "religion is bad, m'kay?", then congratulations, the book is going to make it crystal clear for you.
