Home - A Single-Minded Children's Movie

There are really good animated family movies out there. Home is not one of them.

...And to think I actually liked the Boov short in the first place...

OT: There's a part of me that feels like Doug Walker would like this movie a bit more than Lilo & Stitch just on the fact that it knows what it is and sticks with it in his eyes... But, I digress... I would LOVE to see a family version of District 9, since apparently the setup "hints" on that kind of possibility[footnote]It already sounds better than the predictable plot twist... and I don't even know that this movie even had a plot twist to begin with...[/footnote]... In fact, they could have it focus on the mother of Tip wondering about her daughter and shit with sequences that question both sides of the argument about if this whole "human relocation" thing was a good idea or not in the first place...

Anyhow bad movie is bad, with no value. Shame, it featured a character that wasn't white which is cool to see usually.
The only thing worse than having a bland character is having a bland character whose race/ethnicity is the only highlight of said character...

Just came home from seeing the movie. That mess is so different (and watered down) from the book, I don't see why Dreamworks even bothered buying the rights in the first place.

For the record, I wholeheartedly recommend the book. It's called The True Meaning of Smekday, by Adam Rex, and I dare say it's better than ANY Dreamworks movie released at least the past decade.

Marter's sitting at his desk, painfully going through these movies and all he can think of as he drinks away these painful movie memories is:

*Mild offensive language spoiler*

I thought Marter was planning for something like this.
Also I can't believe anyone had to review Home by watching something more than its bad trailers.

I went with my kids (3/6/9), and the theatre was packed with kids, so the marketing worked.

However, when 30 minutes went by before the kids even chuckled? I knew this was going to be painful.

3 out of the 5 audience-wide laughs (we're talking chuckles here, not bursts of knee slapping) were the material from the trailer. The other two were merely rehashes (a different kind of toilet joke, and another slapstick joke).

The adults laughed a total of 2 times, one joke I can't remember, and the other was tech-support related.

When we got home the kids couldn't remember the plot other than ending.

The music, when it wasn't background music, seemed merely excuses to play Rihanna's latest album. They weren't memorable.

The whole thing played out like it was a direct-to-dvd movie someone convinced the higher-ups to push to theatres because there was nothing else to advertise.

I seriously hope the book was better.

I will say that the hair effects for the little girl are really impressive. Of course, the rest of the film doesn't look nearly that good, so it stands out in a way I find kind of off-putting, especially alongside aliens that look like they're made of play-doh.
