I found out yesterday that a few horror films are being remade and will be released in 2009. Friday 13th and Child's Play are being remade but the one that stuck out mostly for me is Hellraiser. the original was made in 1987 directed by our good friend Clive Barker. it was based on the book The Hellbound Heart written by Clive Barker. the new one will be slightly different from the old one and will be directed by, you guessed it, Clive Barker and will be called Clive Barker Presents: Hellraiser. set for release in the US on January 9th. there were 8 films in total as of 2005 but ive only seen the first 4. does the first one need re-making? what about the other horror's, will remaking them rekindle public interest or take away the greatness that they had? what do you think?

Edit: Nightmare on Elmstreet, The Birds, Pet Cometary and Leprechaun are also being re-made

Most remakes suck, simple as that.

But to be fair, Friday the 13th, Childs Play and Hellraiser will probably fare better than all those Remakes of Asian Films.
I often had the feeling that Asia-Horror Remakes suck because the original works within "a different world". Japanese or Korean Culture is just different, and integrating a story that was invented with that culture in mind just doesn't work out if played out by Americans.
US to US Remakes don't have that problem, so the chances are better that these Remakes will work.

Although i don't understand the need to make Hellraiser. In terms of visual effects the original aged relatively well, and it's still a very chilling movie.
But at least the thought of a new Hellraiser is not as horrifying as the remake of "A Tale of Two Sisters" wich isn't named "A Tale of Two Sisters"

I think alot of films would benefit from updates/remakes given the technology which is now available they could be alot better visually. just as long as they don't fuck with the plots and don't do a Lucas on us all.

also, I like the point above about Asian to US remakes, they never work. this is true of UK hammer to US remakes, ie Wicker Man, whcih sucked and was terrible

I wasn't terribly scared by the original "Ring" and Saadako. Maybe it's a culture thing. Which is why Asian horror (and most movies in general) shouldn't be remade by someone from another continent for the consumption of the people on said continent. Some cultural references will simply not carry over (It is believed that a Television can act as a portal to the other world in Japan, which explains why people over there are dearly afraid of Sadako).

If you're gonna do a "remake", replace the cultural references. For example, in Seven Samurai, Akira Kurosawa had Samurai hired by the villagers to protect their village. In The Magnificent Seven, John Sturges had hired gunmen protecting a village.

And shouldn't this be in the Off-Topic section?

Well, i admit, "The Ring" is the exception of the rule, thanks to an excellent Director.

And i agree with you opinion about how remakes whould replace the cultural references.
