How do my fellow escapists feel about guns? (The real kind)

As an American i own several handguns (because they are so pretty) although i hardly use them. I have a gun club membership and shoot occassional for sport. Besides that I do not hunt and i keep the guns in a locked gun safe, unload with trigger locks. How do the rest of you feel about guns and regular law abiding citizens owning one or two?

Conflicted.

One on hand, there's the FPS geek in me that loves them and gets all excited talking to my army buddies about the effects of a 50CAL bullet on a body.

At the same time, they kill people and that doesn't sit right with me as it's something I'm not sure I could ever live with doing.

Good for hunting, sport, and the army and the police force, pretty much overkill for anything else -- at least in my country.

Edit: Oh, yeah, collecting guns is fine too.

I don't like them, and I definitely don't like the idea of people around me carrying them either.

Besides self-defense, hunting, and war, I don't see the point of them. My family has 3 of them, including a magnum right next my parents' bed.

When I start living alone, I'll probably just get a Tazer. Guns aren't fun for me to shoot, plus a Tazer would do away with all the nasty killing business if I never needed to defend myself.

Don't ask me about my opinions on gun laws because I couldn't give less of a shit about those.

If the right to self defence is a basic human right then I see it as contradictory to deny civilians any right to firearms and/or the right to use them in self defence.

It's no good to say I can go fisticuffs with hardened thugs who mean me harm when as hardened criminals they'd always have the advantage after leading a life of violence. Not to mention regardless of weapon prohibition they can arm themselves with effective weapons from knives and clubs to black market firearms. Guns level the playing field, favour those on the defensive.

Simple question. I live in Australia, where our murder rate (per person) is about one 90th (around 0.11) of the US rate. Most of the first world also has a murder rate around the same as Australia. Americans (as in US - Canada has about the same rate as Australia) kill each other at a rate that the rest of world find unimaginable.

So why is that the case? The fact that we don't have guns, and it is nigh impossible for a criminal to get his hands on a gun here (obviously gun controls won't work if you can just drive to the next state and buy one there - they work in Australia because they apply federally)? Or is the US just culturally barbaric?

Personally, I'd go with 'the guns'. If you prefer 'the US is culturally inferior' as an explanation, then be my guest...

I'm going to get one in a couple years when I hit 21, I'll use it for shooting ranges though I plan to carry it around if I can get a permit.

I think people should be allowed to have and carry guns.

You'll notice the deadly shootings never (nearly never? I'm not entirely sure it has literally not happened once) occur at a gun range or an NRA meeting, and many of the deadly shootings such as the recent one at Arizona could probably have suffered a lower body count if someone at the scene had a gun, and used it to stop the shooter.

Guns are awesome. Anyone who knows me can tell you that I know more about guns than any gun store worker could ever dream to know. I started shooting at the age of 6 and I will probably never stop until I die. As I stated in another post about guns I have shot everything from 8mm to .50 AE, .224 to 50 BMG and from 10 to 20 gauge.

I love their use in games and media. But I am very critical of their use in real-life.

I just find it absurd to be in possession of something that was made for the specific purpose of murder, whether for self-defense or intent to harm. I find its use for the purpose of gaining power from fear/might equally obscene.

I do not like guns, I do not ever want one in my house. Which is funny cause I love CoD games...must be because I secretly want to shoot people in real life.

You should try a .44 Mag revolver, it's a blast.

Tazers do kill people tho? I mean it's electricity, that shit kills.
(nothing compared to a handgun i just felt like bringing it up)

OT: Guns are good, people should have the right to defend themselves and fight for their own ideals.

The problem is people, people are stupid, dangerous and fairly hostile when they know they have that power of defence.

(when i say people i'm generally excluding people trained with weapons and weapons safety)

Totally agree. There is no reason for anyone to carry a gun. It turns a brawl into a shootout, a theft into murder. No good comes from weapons ever.

The argument for owning guns is a self-perpetuating one that applies to any weapon. If no one owned one, there would be no need for any of them.

The only thing you accomplish in owning a gun is ensuring that another person will also own one.

Actually, someone nearby who arrived at the scene after a few seconds did carry a gun.

Almost blew the brains out of the guy who had wrested the gun from the gunman, but luckily decided to tackle him instead before realizing he was attacking the wrong guy. Oh and this guy I'm talking about? He approached the scene with his gun in his pocket because he feared he might be considered a second gun-man and fired upon if he didn't.

I don't oppose civillian ownership of firearms, but there needs to be a much more stringent system in place to assess, train and prepare gun owners for the type of chaotic situations they might encounter. It was pure luck that prevented any more people from being shot that day.
