Just saw 2(2!) commercials that implied that eating meat was causing Global Warming(which will trigger the next ice age btw).I've heard all the reasons for this (ie:deforestation, methane gasses, etc) but I don't understand how if I stop eating meat this will help.I mean all those animals and grazing land won't disappear magically and they'll just continue to breed and increase their numbers contributing more gasses to the atmosphere.Someone want to field this? What happens to all the animals if everyone on Earth stopped eating meat right now? What's the plan activists?

Deforestation for cattle-growing space. Not good. Also, rearing an animal takes a lot of food that we could just eat ourselves.

Thats so retarded. Seems like the veggies have run out of proper defenses for themselves.

There'd be absolutely no need for any breeds that provide meat, so they'd all get slaughtered because they're taking up all the farmland that could be used to grow veg. Temporarily ironic I know.

Like someone was saying in another thread, if we ate polar bears they wouldn't be endangered. If we stopped eating beef cattle say then they would probably become endangered-all the meat poachers wanting to kill them for a start.

Edit: I like how I'm the only person who's actually suggesting why it could work. And I'm certainly not suggesting that it should be an step actively taken.

Thats my dads reason for being a veggie.

However, applied to the whole world, it would fail.

I'm sure they'd say "eat a healthy alternative" but I like my meat so I won't. There's always money to be made out of making people panic I guess.

I think the idea is that if people stopped eating cows, they'd stop being bred, so they'd stop farting. It seems reasonable enough, but 1. I don't buy into man made global warming and 2. I enjoy eating animals.

so now humanity decides which animals are "needed".I hope you realise we didn't magic up any of these animals, but only domesticated their wild ancestors. And it's not ironic it's called being a hypocrite.you either protect ALL the animals or NONE of the animals.

Saying that it will stop global warming is an outrageous claim but I suppose most people are so dull that only outrageous claims get noticed. Meat does take more energy to produce than the equivalent energy it takes to provide crops that have the same food energy so the carbon footprint is lower for that reason alone.

I dunno about farm animal populations as that shit is scary complicated. Maybe if there was less demand for meat they could breed less of them or something. I dunno, seems like that might work to me.

I do my part to help the environment: I eat the cows that release all that methane gas.

BUT I'M ONLY ONE MAN!

So please, join me in a steak, and protect the environment!

I think the basic idea in this is that the amount of farmland it takes to get meat causes a lot of these problems. I have incredible doubts that it would actually stop global warming but it would probably help lower our carbon footprint.

Actually if we stopped hunting cows eventually they would reach an equilibrium with the other animals around them. The only animal where there is never an equilibrium reached between the animals are humans.

Haha, unfortunally supply and demand would mean more cows would be bred to feed you.
