Ok so I have a friend in my law class, we both like anime. But what totally annoys me is the way he says it. He pronounces it, 'an-I?m?.

Now I keep telling him it?s wrong as I know that anime is actually from the word animation. And the way I have found it is pronounced 'an-I-ma'. But even if I had a professor of English telling him I?m right, he still wouldn't listen.

sooooo, I?m just curious how other people pronounce it. Especially any Japanese, as technically I think it is their 'word/abbreviation' anyway.

The proper way to say anime is ann-ih-may (ih as in the I from his or sit). You can also pronounce it ann-eh-may, but the ending is definitely may and the beginning is definitely ann.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: This is the proper pronunciation in the U.S., your mileage may vary.

there really is not major right or wrong way, despite what one often may hear. The words them selves differ with regional accents...

In Osaka you may hear it as A(as in apple)-ni-MEH, and Mon-gah
where as Kyoto It will be Oneh-me, MAIN-GAH

go to a smaller area, like fuku and you often hear is blurred together like ( and blurt it out fast) anima- manga ( like mango)

so really the only way to know how close to correct you are is to know the proper verbal phonetics and their variances, but take into account regional phonetics can alter a pronunciation.

Ever notice how many different variations on 'Naruto' there are?

Hardcore fans: Nah-roo-toe!
Gringos like me: Nar-a-toe
