For me, I'm 24 now, and started playing for real when I was about 6 or 7. How about the other people on the escapists.

Started playing when I was 3. ZX Spectrum 81. Obviously I didn't have a lot of insight as to what I was doing, but pressing the rubber keys made things move. That was enough, at that point, to get me hooked.

I think I enjoyed the loading screen noises more than the games at that age, right enough!

That's actually quite interesting in itself.

Why did you suddenly, at the age of 22, decide you wanted to play games? Was it because you had a go on someone else's and realised it was great? Was it just that you got a notion one day and it stuck?

I've never come across a 'new' gamer like you before - all the gamers I know have been, like myself, gaming mentalists for almost their entire lives.

I'm 29, and started regularly playing games (got my own ZX Sectrum!) when I was 7. Had occasionally played the odd game like 3-Demon or Digger that my dad had on a couple of 5.25" discs for a couple of years before that though, and that plug-into-tv pong thing.

Hmm probably around 6 when i played for first time on a cousins NES. Around 10 or 11 when i got my first Amstrad Shneider PC. Good old times.

19 currently and I think I started with a Sega Megadrive (or Genesis to the yanks) when I was 4 or 5. I got a N64 when I was 7 and that's when I started properly playing video games because until then I'd only basically played the first 3 levels of Sonic several times.

20. I got my first gameboy for Christmas of 1994. It came with FIFA 1994 and Link's Awakening. I just found it when I was visiting my home to drop off some boxes. It still works.

18...got a SEGA Mega Drive one day when I was about 4 I think. My dad came home one day from work with it. What a wonderful day!

EDIT: Actually, thinking about it, my parents used to have an MS-DOS on which I played epic games like Commander Kean, Duke Nukem and Jin of the Jungle!

I am at the ripe old age of 22. I started playing games when I was five when I discovered my mom and dad bought me a SNES for Christmas. The first game I ever played was Super Mario World.

Super Mario Bros (I think) I played it with the neighbours older kid at age of 4-5? (released in EU, 1987)
Sonic on the Sega (released 1991)
Wolfenstein 3D (released 1992) I only had to use ctrl to shoot, an older friend used the arrow keys
