Hugh Jackman Says he Will be Wolverine "One Last Time"

Hugh Jackman posted a picture of the iconic Wolverine claws with the caption "Wolverine ... one last time".

Just after a month since stating he wanted to Instagram [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139905-Hugh-Jackman-Wants-to-Keep-Playing-Wolverine-Forever] account. It was accompanied with the caption ""Wolverine ... one last time".

The three claws suggest that he is talking about the upcoming third Wolverine stand-alone movie [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3315342/], which is slated for release in 2017. While the message could interpreted as Jackman's last time playing the character, another way to look at it may be an announcement that this would be the last stand-alone Wolverine movie.

Either way, at this point we are unsure of whether or not Jackman will appear in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139575-X-Men-Apocalypses-Young-Cyclops-Storm-Jean-Grey-Cast-Revealed] due out next year. We have, however, learned that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan won't be reprising their roles as Professor Xavier and Magneto, so this information, combined with Jackman's cryptic message, suggests that Wolverine won't be in it.

When Wolverine 3 is released, it will mark Jackman's 17th year playing the character, since he was first cast in 2000's X-men.

Wolverine, Wolverine in Tokyo (whatever it was call) were both horrible movies. Neither of them added to the X-man universe at all, save for a great Gambit (however short and pushed back that part was). There needs to be no more mediocre X-men movies. Fire the Wolverine guys, fire the guys that did X-men #2 & #3. Keep on the guys that did First Class -although fire their comedy writers that thought the whole finding mutants needed a 1970's tune to comedic bit plays-, and possibly the guys that did it's 2nd part, which was Days of Future Past. That is it. Now make a good X-men movie!

Anyway, the sooner Jackman's Wolverine stops being part of the X-Men movie, the less popular they'll become, the less money Fox will make, the more likely they'll be to revert the rights (if only partially, like Sony) back to Marvel to bring them into the MCU fold.

Clearly he just means that this is the last movie with Wolverine in it. Then they can start strip mining the "Old Man Logan" IP. They probably have the rights because he is/was part of the X-Men.

I'm fine with that. I like his portrayal and think he's been in some great movies (some really shitty ones too though), but he's been the main character of the X-Men movies for too long.

Since they're setting up a universe of sorts now, even with diminished returns they can always pull a "First Class" on us with a new cast of nobodies being singed on for a few movies. I don't see the diminished returns (assuming they can't manage to use the name alone to bring in the cash) forcing them into a Sony situation until the mid 20s, by which point the MCU will be so entrenched and so close to the wrap up that Marvel won't be interested until they reboot the whole thing in the late 20s/early 30s.

Plus, something to remember about the Sony situation is that it wasn't because of the movies not brining in money, but because the movie division of the company is in financial problems. Fox, by comparison, has managed to keep things steady.

I can understand X-Men 3 and most of the others but why fire the people that did X2: X-Men United? The general consensus since the movie came out was that is better than the first X-Men film.

I don't see how the Old Man Logan story would work as a movie.

Every other element needed to make it work belongs to Marvel Studios or Sony. Hell the entire reason for the Old Man Logan story was the Hulk wanting his rent.

It seems to me that "one last time" is just a tag line to draw attention to the movie. To be honest I haven't been impressed by anything else he's done and as he's getting on in the years now I just can't see him getting involved in anything as big as "Wolverine" has been for him.

That said I do think eventually they are going to need to sit down and re-think the way they do these movies, to me it's been a matter of saying "good" or "bad" in comparison to other X-men films and I don't think there were any of them I found particularly great, and they never quite seemed to play well with the actual mythology, the Disney movies at least treated it with some respect (well except Iron Man 3) even as they took liberties.

Watch the "Hail to the King" short, not only is it a great watch, it will clear up any issues you have with Iron Man 3 very nicely.

The cgi at the start X3 worked rather well. But god knows if they could pull that off through a whole film.

I like Jackman as Wolverine, but Wolverine as a character doesn't work in stand alone movies. Wolverine is only really interesting for the role he plays in the team. On his own, he's just boring.

UH, so I am not really up to speed but Wolverine was a prequel to the Xmen, Wolverine 2 (Wolverine in Japan) was a sequel? He had the metal claws which then got snapped but he then had the claws back in Xmen DOFP, but THAT used some time travelling jiggery to ret conn X1, 2 and 3... so is W3 set after this? I dunno all I do know is the Wolverine movies weren't very good, the Xmen movies started ok, got worse, got better then got confusing.
