I told you I was going to do it!

All 251 pokemon are finally mine, including one of each letter of the unown! I didn't just complete the pokedex either, I have one of each. It took 7 months, but I'm done! My cartridge says it took 157 hours. Around 80 of those were at double or triple speed, but considering how long it took me to beat Pokemon Stadium 2 and the fact I had to go through Red a couple times and Silver once and over 10 hours of resets going for the lucky egg before giving up and getting it with the egg glitch, I think it's a fairly accurate time.

This was one of the most tedious things I've ever done, I think I might be insane to have actually done it. Every pokemon that you can't catch in the wild can die in a fire! Leveling up a pokemon to level 55 so it can evolve is ridiculous! I spent literal DAYS walking back and forth in Mt. Silver! With lucky egg!

I can only imagine what the poor souls have to go through to catch what ungodly number exists now days.

Good job. I did that a couple of years back in Heart Gold. Took me a similar amount of time, if I recall correctly.

Some of the pokemon that you can catch can also go fuck themselves. It took me 140 tries to find a Yanma. It only spawns on one route with a 1% chance. You better believe I have a lvl 100 Yanmega now. If I have to spend all that time grinding I will get some use out of it too! I also recall that there was a 3% chance of catching shellder while fishing.

To be fair, the fact that I had to spend stupid effort to do it, makes some of the stories better.

I thought you were talking about beating Sekiro, but this is even more of an accomplishment. Congrats!

So, serious question, how would trading work nowadays?

Like, let's say I start with chikorita. I can get both its evolutions. However, there's two other starters that I can't get in the game (cyndequil/totodile), and there's no reason why another player would trade me a starter permanantly. So, do you still do the temporary save thing (have it in the pokedex for second, trade it back immediately, counts as having caught it)? Is that feasible online?

Back in the day, I'd trade them to myself from another cartridge (got around 130 pokemon in Gen 1), but is that viable anymore?

in gen 6 people would put up their mons for trade and put a setting on it saying they'll trade that mon for this specific mon. usually people ended up asking for legendaries that you can't even trade online

wonder trade let's you trade one of your mons for another one completely at random. it usually results in yourself receiving a shit mon but i've gotten some cool stuff from there. once i got traded a shiny level 100 mew that only knew the move metronome and the original owner of it nicknamed the Mew "Mewtronome"

otherwise just trade online with friends or take part in twitch stream giveaways from poketubers.

i caught them all during gen 6.

it's actually much easier than it used to be since you can trade over the internet now unlike the old days.

If you traded, then you didn't actually catch them all.

Yeah, but unless things have changed in the DS remakes of Gen 1/2, it's literally impossible to complete the pokedex without trading.

Some pokemon can only evolve when traded. And then there's the starters, which can't be caught at all.

Eh, i'd still argue, the "Catch em all" challenge counts if you caught all the pokemon, barring those that can only be obtained otherwise.

I did it. I traded with myself.
