I like rap that isn't talking about "gettin dem bitchez" or money.

Rap songs that can convey a legitimate message are rap songs that have my respect.

Lupe Fiasco is a good example:
The entire song, at first, is merely talking about skating.
Then you realize that every lyric is a double entendre.

Other notable artists are the previously mentioned Aesop Rock.

Sounds like you're just getting into good hip hop. You see, people will balk at the notion of mainstream music while preaching that there is great music underground but fail to accept that the same can be said for hip hop.

What's on the radio, is the absolute least of the hip hop available to you if you just look a little. Same with any genre.

A lot of rap is stupid, but then again so is a lot of rock, metal, pop, or whatever. I get the feeling that most of the "hurr RAP is CRAP" people get their opinions from watching MTV and the likes, which is a stupid thing to begin with.

I love Gorillaz, they're one of my favorite bands, and I'm a metalhead. Those 2 songs you listed are pretty much the only ones that are rap songs. All the other ones are genre-less unique epics that will never leave your head.
Are you kidding have you even listened to the majority of Gorillaz? how can you say those two are the only rap songs? 911, All alone, Kids with guns, November has Come (featuring the awesome MF Doom). Are all rap songs that i can think of just off the top of my head.

Reminds me a little of The Streets....but maybe it's just the accent. Spoken word rap can be pretty sweet.

My favorite song by the streets is probably Blinded by the lights....its just an eerie song.

This mand deserves e-cookies from you all. Now! :p

There's a track on the second Gorillaz album with MF DOOM on it, he's also another one to look into if you've got the time (in his many guises). He's got a habit of sounding really lazy when he raps, but once you get used to it he's got some really clever/ geeky moments of pure lyrical joy.

Doggy Style by Snoop Dogg is a great album, and some of Eminem's stuff makes me laugh when go goes off on a rant.

Public Enemy were just awesome in every way.

Screw Nu-Metal, it was Public Enemy and Anthrax who did the first crossover.

Oh, and this, I tend to think of him more as a poet.

I guess you, and most people who agree with you do liek rap, just not mindless gangsta shit. Theres tons of intelelgent rap about other stuff than guns drugs and ho's, and also a lot of rap which takes those otehrwise hated subjects up in an interresting way.

Rap has just gotten a bad rep (at least on this site) cause most people only associate it with the lameness that is gangsta rap, or empty unintellegent verses rap.

Theres really a lot of good stuff if you care to look a little for it.
Given the lyrics-dominated nature of rap, where the music is often sortof simple and a single verse often contains more lyrics than a whole song of some other genre, it's a great way, of singing/rapping about stuff which can't be explained in 2x5 lines + a repeated chorus. But sadly, theres not a lot of people who realize this, cause the kind of rap you'll hear on main-stream radio stations is ususally either gangsta or party rap. And even when you get good rappers, it's not the good songs that end up there.
Now i know some of you might disagree, but i think eminem is a really good rapper. while his texts are often "hard" some are cruel/evil theres also a good intellegent songs on his track list, and some of the songs that would easily get classified as gangsta, are really a lot deeper than say 50cents guns ho's and money songs.
But sadly, the first single is always some random track that basicly says nothing (my name is, real slim shady, without me, just loose it, we made you) so people don't even realize this.

Heres a few recomendations for people who likes rap, but only when it's about more than "look at how many guns, ho's and cars i have"
These are not the only good songs, just a few examples

Eminem: Sing for the moment, mockingbird, marshal matters, 'till i collapse, 8 mile, stan, rock bottom (theres more this is just to name a few)
Fort Minor (mike shinoda form linkin park + otehrs): Right Now, ciggarettes, red to black (basicly their whole album tbh)´
Nas: i can
Raekwon: Fuck them
Obie Trice: Lady, hands on you
Imortal teqnique

And theres tons more, just check this thread for instance.

I'm not much of a rap fan either, it can easily be broken down into a few categories:
Screwin' da Poe-lice
Troubled childhoods, growin' up on da hard streets
Smackin' down a ***** when she tries to get real
Icin' any homies who get up in yo grill

Hmm, it's pretty easy to write actually. Look for my debut album next month.

Being a white cracker and all, I'm not much for rap, but it's not bad music to work out to. I usually pop in the metals \m/ but there is the rare occasion that I want to listen to rap.

The rap that is simply about sex or egomaniacality, I hate. I still occsionally enjoy humorous rap (like Just Lose It by Eminem) or the awesome kind like this
That was seriously one of the best works of art I've seen in a while. From the visual style, to the story the lyrics told. I usually don't pick up on the meaning of the lyrics of most songs (if there is one), but that one had a lot to say and I heard it. I too hate gansta rap like a lot of people in this thread, but I totally go for shit like this.

They to seem have brought rap back to it's literal meaning; poetry to music.

That aside Eminem is brilliant no matter how popular he's become. He's one of the few people who sings about things that actually matter while still having a sense of humor.
seconded about scrubious pip and dan le sac, but i prefer "letter from God".
