I like them because trolls tend to be dealt with quickly. And most people here can have an actual discussion without slinging a bunch of nonsense or fanboy crap.

For the most part i feel like the escapist rooted in a deep dedication to open-mindedness and respect, that encourages fair discussion and good conversation. At times i do feel that the mods can be a bit trigger happy, but then again it's exactly because of their hard work that we can keep this place the way it is and not just have it boil down into flamewars, so i do appreciate them, even if i dont always agree with them

Because people here tend to put a lot of effort into their posts, and are really looking for a good conversation/debate, instead of just one word posts and flaming.
Couple of reasons come to mind:
1. Threads have comments that are insightful as opposed to 101 trolls on comment threads within other sites. Opinions, counter-points and a bunch of educated users can all add to the discussion value, without any need for unmitigated flaming and knuckle dragging from fanboys
2. No use of signatures; I find to be a boon because they can get bloody enormous on other forums, where I'm not really interested in what irrelevant stats they display about the user
3. Moderators that actually keep the forums clear of any short answers and offensive opinions designed to offend, including locking of threads that deem to go down to wrong path

I mostly visit here when I see an interesting thread title while watching Escapist videos. I don't usually post that much. When I do, it's because I'm bored.
The debate seems fairly thought-out, though, which is nice. People can't get away with spouting Glenn Beck nonsense. The Escapist requires facts.

There's a different sample of people here than in the traditional forums (this company's forums, that games forums, those nasty sex forums, political forums, etc...).
Its nice to have a wide range of folks to share thoughts with.
