im a huge fan of the age of empires games, i loved AoE II (probably one of the best games ever) i bought III ages ago and ive now started to get really into it.

im considering downloading rome: total war or possibly once i get a decent laptop i might consider empire: total war. Ive watched vids on youtube but its mostly some guy in a custom scenario talking bullshit history he read on wiki, These vids dont really give me an idea of what the game is about. so i ask my fellow escapees where is the similarity and difference between these two franchises and what exactly is the gameplay like in total war

A lot of the game is like Civilisation, the real time combat only really shares real time combat with AoE.

Regardless of all that, you like Age so I assume you like stategy, so yeah go for it, Rome is widley considered the best, my favouite is Medieval 1 though

Total War plays two ways.

In the campaign map, it plays like Civilization. You get a look at your empire from an isometric view, move armies around, ect.

In the battle mode, it plays kind of like an RTS.

They are pretty much completely different. Both are fucking awesome though.

is this sort of like risk were you have say 100 reinforcements(1) and you attack different places BUT instead of rolling a dice it plays like an RTS (2)

OR is it 2 seperate game modes

Except that it's, you know, completely different.

Total War battles are a lot, and I mean a LOT more massive than anything AoE will ever through at you, and it's a lot more tactical to boot.

Don't get me wrong I love both though.

First of all, this belongs in the Gaming subforum.

Second of all, Age of Empires and Total War are completely different games. In Total War, you have a mix of a Risk-style campaign map and extremely detailed and awesome battles.

If you really want to play Total War, then I reccommend Rome: TW, simply because I found it so much more fun than the other games. (though the original Medieval, my first Total War game, is pretty close.)

I know, but as a general overview TW is more like Civ than AoE, and the battles are a lot harder, like I said the only thing they do have in common is the fact they are both real time

Basically 2 separate game modes.

You recruit armies from cities throughout your empire. The number of troops available is based on the city's population. A massive capital city may have tons and tons of the best troops available, while a recently acquired Celtic village may have a few peasants, brigands... or possibly nothing.

Maybe, but they are completely different. Age is fast paced and relies on twitch skills. Its good if you want to finish a game in a hour or so. Total war is more serious and introduces concepts like morale and flanking and is definitely more strategic. It could take weeks to finish a campaign.

I think they are both fun, but age is far superior in multiplayer.

Yeah, more or less.

Total War's a different flavor of animal from traditional RTS. I prefer TW because it's much deeper---either the campaign map or the combat could probably stand on its own as a game (the former is basically Civilization with only slightly less depth, the latter could be sold as a bunch of historical battles as a budget title).

I loved AOE and love the Total War series. The gameplay is quite different. Total War has a much larger scope.

They are both included in a single game mode, you play a turn-based style campaign map and a real-time strategy battle map when you fight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRkF93Nv97g - Campaign map

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY92WX3aIzY - Battle

You can play multiplayer battles online or do skirmish mode which just has battles and no campaign map.
