I may have completely broken Fallout 4's main quest. Some help?

I'm on my third bloody save in Fallout 4, going the Railroad route this time, and I got to the quest 'Getting a Clue'. I didn't want to finish it right away, so I started doing some side stuff (mainly stuff involving actually /joining/ the Railroad) when Dogmeat showed up. I expected him to just stay in front of Kellogg's house until I came back.
Instead, he wound up wandering around the Wasteland before staying at the Red Rocket station. So I decided to finally do the quest and had him smell the cigar and he just...didn't move. I did it again. He didn't move. I think he has to be in Diamond City for it to work, except he will /not/ move from the Red Rocket station no matter where I go or how long I wait. I tried going to the military base Kellogg's at right away instead of following the dog to see if that worked, and there are specific precautions in measure so you won't be able to go to the basement of the military base (boarded up doors and an elevator not even spawning), so I can't do that, either.
Am I just fucked forever?

I would suggest just going directly to the base the guy is holed up in (because I've heard from other people that that works and skips the buggy dog part). But you say you've already tried that, so I'm out of ideas...

If you're playing on PC, and you want to force Dogmeat to Diamond City, then just go there yourself and then use the console command: "1d162.moveto player"

I may have just completely gotten lost without the almighty Quest Marker to help me find my way, but I distinctly remember there being an elevator in that room with the Advanced terminal.
And sadly, I'm on a PS4.

yeah like skyrim the scripting engine bethesda uses is temperamental and if you complete actions to fast or take to long the script can "forget" certain actions. the best advice i was given with the games was dont accept a quest unless you are going to do it soon

Pretty much this. If you start a questline in a Bethesda game, finish it ASAP. Leaving stuff open typically tends to backfire.

This is a Bethesda game. Just ignore the main quest and sink 200+ hours into sidequests and messing about.

Found the elevator. It's boarded up. Wonderful.
Fellow PS4 owner here, and I have found that Dogmeat tends to spawn next to me whenever I use an enclosed elevator, even though I left him at the other end of the map.

Maybe try the one in the Mayor's office at Diamond City?

Here's a video of my attempt to fix it. It didn't work out well.

Ah. What I meant was, if Dogmeat is really far away and you enter an elevator alone, the game might suddenly decide to teleport him straight to you. (This seems to happen to me every time I enter an elevator.) I figure this sudden change of Dogmeat's location just might reset whatever script caused your bug in the first place.

Assuming your Dogmeat is still parked in Diamond City where your video leaves off, you might try leaving him there and heading for the elevator in nearby Vault 81. There are at least two loading screens between the two points, so it should have the same effect.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm a bit stuck too. I can't warn Desdamona, she just throws general dialogue at me and I never get to a text wheel. Also on PS4.

OT: I can't believe you spent two hours pushing the dog to the city. I would have started a new game instead. Two questions, did you try shooting him into his knocked down state? And two, because I forgot, would the terminal help? Because Nick could open it. Do you /have/ to talk to Nick to get to that part? If you didn't try that, he calls the dog. Since it's your third save, I'm just guessing you skipped a step and the quest line broke. Although it seems to be more like Dogmeat's problem.

The terminal in the fort just opens a locked room where you can get loot and stuff, sadly. I tried all I could and nothing worked. I finally just started from my Vault 111 save and I'm gonna work myself back to where I was.
I'll prioritize getting into the Railroad before doing too many main missions so I can get my hands on the Deliverer early. Thanks for the support, everyone!
(Also, if any of you saw my other thread: Going into the Glowing Sea at Level 11 does not go well, and you cannot find Virgil. Do not attempt, you will find only pain.)

That's what I would suggest, yeah. They also trust you a lot more if you seek them out before the main quest line actually requires it of you.
