Ok here is the story once upon a time.... wait wrong story

Alright now seriously the story is I bought my laptop on boxing day, it was running fine but lately its been getting buggy, my sister who owns the same laptop had hers crash a few days ago and she got hers 2 weeks before iI got mine. Now normally I would assume it would be the computer but apparently its windows 7 that's the culprit even the manufacturer said that it's auto updates aren't always compatible and it may do some damage, so to avoid having to deal with evil companies I have been thinking of going to linux ubuntu. This isn't the first time I have considered it and I tried installing it on another laptop that was laying around I managed to get it to work except the wireless internet but that was because of the brand name and I couldn't figure out the coding to get it to function.

Now here is where you come in fellow escapists, Figuring i only have about 2 weeks till my computer may die, I am coming to you asking if you can help me with Linux, I'm aware that there was a virtual machine program for XP and Vista that allowed you to run linux inside of windows without partitioning your hard drive, is there anyway i would be able to do this inside of windows 7? Or must i partition it?

I'm sorry if this offensive to anyone or if I have any grammar errors but i really would like to get this sorted out, if anyone can help please do.

When you burn Ubuntu to a cd, insert, and reboot, it should give you the option of choosing which partition it installs on (or wiping the entire HDD for it).

Since I'm up here, shouldn't this be in the Ubuntu forums?

There are ubuntu forums on the escapist? Really? I didnt know that.

I would like to see if there is another way to run linux though without having to partition my hard drive like you could on XP or Vista, just to see if its compatible with my computer.

It's compatible.

You can install ubuntu "inside" your windows partition(best nontechnical explanation I can think of), or you could just create a new partition.

Also (I think) he^^ is referring to the actual ubuntuforms, we don't have anything like that here (do we?)
Awesome I am good with computers but i'm not very experienced with programming especially linux. Would I just run the disk while logged on windows or would it require me to restart my computer as if i were to partition it anyways?

You would have to restart as if it was another partition. You can, however, run them side by side.

Look at this [http://lifehacker.com/5195999/portable-ubuntu-runs-ubuntu-inside-windows]
Awesome thanks for the help I will probably give it a shot, however one last question, If I were to do this and everything works fine does that mean if i ran Ubuntu by itself on my computer everything would work fine as well? I understand if you cant answer haha, I own an Acer Aspire 4535, just so you know.

It really should work perfectly right away, hardware support in linux is actually getting quite fantastic nowadays. I would be quite surprised(shocked) if it didn't.

Plus I couldn't find anybody with problems by googling "Aspire 4535 ubuntu"!
Thank you very much for all your help kind fellow escapist. =]
The only problem i had was when i used the wireless internet adaptor it was a D link and i couldn't get it to work, but this acer has wireless connector built in so we shall see but thanks! I am going to try it right now wish me luck.

Yeah, I've found that wireless internet adapters are kinda spotty as far as linux goes, some work instantly and some take some effort to get to work (And you can get them all to work, if you jump through the right hoops).

Never had a problem with an internal one, however.
Alright well thank you very much for all your help, if I have any problems I may ask you but it will be in a PM thanks =]
