I should have bought Skyrim on a console...

I will always defend PC as the best form of gaming for everything ever, and of course I bought Skyrim on PC without hesitating.

But of course, it went from a bug free v.1.1 and 1.2 for me to an absolutely horrible v1.3 experience.

My game crashes to desktop every 5 minutes no matter which graphics settings I use and I have tried EVERY fix on the internet.

In 1.2 I was using all of the then available HD retexture mods, had a tweaked ini file for maximum graphics and load distance, and now I can play on medium for 10 mins before it randomly decides to crash.

I can't use mods at all now, it is between 2 - 5 mins for a crash with any mods installed, which is seriously annoying as the game was looking great prior to 1.3.

Now if I have to play it with its rubbish default textures and load distances (and still crash!) I might as well have dusted off my xbox and bought it on that. MY PC is easily good enough to play Skyrim, I got a max rating on systemrequirementslab so it annoys me that Bethesda have patched it to ruin it on my computer. My brothers computer has never crashed with the game and mine can't stop crashing.

And to further my annoyance Steam's 'do not automatically update this game' option does not work, and it auto updates anyway...

I was giving the game all 10s and praise when it first came out, now it is virtually unplayable.

Discussion value: Whatever you make of it.

Console versions also have bugs, especially the PS3 version. The difference is, the PC version is easier to fix and for some fixes you don't need to wait for Bethesda, modders will fix it for you. As for your crashing, it sounds to me like it's your own fault for heavily modding your game. Modding is great, but it always carries an element of risk with it that people often seem to forget about and then act all suprised when something goes wrong...

I wouldn't. I would stick to PC. Just incase you get some bug you can go into console and fix it. You can't do that on console.

[x]PC games won't work perfectly on every console
[x]Bethesda games are pretty buggy
[ ]Console versions work fine

Sorry, but even the console versions have their problems (PS3 one can be pretty much unplayable due to a core design flaw).

Unfortunately, even though on paper the PC is the strongest gaming platform, in actuality developers probably find it easier to make games on consoles than PCs. You don't need to test it with multiple systems, you don't have to worry about compatability, you don't have to worry about making lots of graphics options for versatility within other PCs.

As you can see, plenty of people are playing the latest patch of skyrim, with mods, with no problems, while other people can't even play the game.

I've got it on PS3 (completely unpatched btw), and it's fine--a bit buggy, but not any buggier than I would expect from a Bethesda game. Still, there must be a way to get it running right again on your pc, and then you can take advantage of mods if you get bored with the vanilla version. Have you tried a complete uninstall, delete game saves etc., then reinstall?

PC = mods so it just takes some waiting time, console = no mods which means if it is broken, it might not get fixed..because sometimes they do not like to make patches etc...

Well sucks for you I guess. Have you tried deleting the game and reinstalling? Or trying to start a new save game, perhaps?

I've not had any issues like that on PC besides self induced ones from modding, which go away when I revert back to normal settings.

My PC is pretty old by any modern standard, i wont bore people by posting the specs but i can run skyrim on it with all the settings on high and the only bug ive encountered is the textures on trees going completly purple, fixed it by lowering one setting, i did have to download a user made fix to get the particle effects for fire spells and cobwebs displaying though. What can i say i've been using a pc no for so long the last consoles i owned were the original playstation one and the gamecube, i guess its just somthing you get used to after a while, also it is a bethesda game that in its self is no justification for bad patches and dodgey bugs but its pretty much to be expected.

I have skyrim on the ps3 and I have not noticed any bugs that have been highly negative, the worst i have gotten is just random funny glitches. I have heard very negative things about bugs but on all bethesda game I haven't really experienced them.

Have you tried uninstalling the game and redownloading it, then disconnecting from the internet every time you load the game?

Reinstalling the game will give you a fresh install without the patches, and disconnecting from the internet when loading up the game should prevent the game from downloading any new patches, so you'll keep the game at v1.0. Then if you need to, you can download patches 1.1 and 1.2 on a flash drive and install them manually without connecting to the internet, and you can do the same for mods.

I know it's pretty extreme, but if patch 1.3 is what's screwing you up and the "do not auto-update" option isn't working then it seems like that's the only way.

Anyway, if you hadn't already thought of that solution then I hope it helps.

- delete game and reinstall
- install patches 1.1 and 1.2
- get the no-Steam patch
- ???
- Christmas profit

I disabled Steam right off the start because I knew the force fed patches and mods will not mix well.

The console version is... well actually probably better.
I've been encountering a LOT of freezes recently, and occasionally the frame rate dies.
EDIT:
Pretty much everyone playing Skyrim on consoles is really jealous of mods. Just saying.

I can't really speak to it as I haven't had any of the issues you describe but if you are really having so many have you considered just not updating?
I stayed on Skyrim 1.0 for quite some time before finally venturing into the updates.

I didn't read his post, just the thread title and the first sentence or two.

I'd have to counter point. I bought originally for the 360, my thinking that it would crash less, I would get a cleaner experience due to it being dedicated hardware, all that. Well, when I was 20 hours in my Xbox decided to RROD on me, the same one I've had for the last six years. Even without the hardware failure, the text was incredibly hard to read sitting four feet away from my TV, and let's face it, dual stick controllers just do not match keyboard and mouse. So I got it again, for PC, and I'm 100 hours, and enjoying it far more than I did on the 360. I do have occasional crashes, but they're few and far between. It looks far better than it ever did on the 360, and the added benefits of keyboard and mouse and mods makes me question why I ever bought it for 360 in the first place. Yes it's Microsoft's fault they made a faulty console, but even when it was working, the 360 version was crap compared to the computer version.

While I can't possibly condone any modification of any sorts, I can merrily report that, yes, Skyrim does work like a charm with no Steam attached.

I do love the power of Steam to just give me back whatever files I modified/deleted, but when I have a running build up that satisfies me, I really don't fancy having things "fixed" for me accidentally.
