(Yes this will be a bit of a rant)
So I'm happily playing Starcraft 2, 3rd game in the placement league and I'm hoping to at least make silver. Game starts, right, sort out workers, another on the way, "gl hf", desktop appears.... Wait what? Back to Starcraft! Now! Wait, where is it? Why are all my programs closing? AHH WINDOWS! WHY?!

Windows decided that, because I didn't explicitly tell it not to, right then would be the perfect moment to restart to install updates. Ahh gee, thanks Windows how considerate of you. I can see so many uses for that feature, like if i was out the house and downloading some games off steam, or making dinner waiting for some heavy code compilation to finish up, it's always a good time really. I'm aware I can probably turn it off but I'd never thought to, this is a relatively new computer and this is the first time it's happened. But why is it a feature? Does anyone ever find that useful that their computer restarts randomly if they don't tell it to?

Sorry about the rant, I'm a little peeved right now and needed to vent, so to add real discussion value. Has this sort of thing happened to you at just the worst time? Share your latent rage at poor design choices or faulty power supplies!

Well I was the healer in WoW and on the final boss it decided to ask my if I wanted to restart my computer....came back after saying no and everybody was dead. I generally don't have this problem, because I always restart it right when it asks me, but man that sucked.

Turning it off is one of the first things I do after installing Windows. Thus no, it never happened to me.

Windows is trying to update now, which is getting annoying.

I've had it happen at some pretty bad times but nothing comes to mind.

I always ask myself "And why is this update so important? It's not like one day they're going to release an update that transforms my crappy vista into something user-friendly and just plain tolerable.

Help'd
Fix'd

Was that really that hard? I do it to every new computer that I get. One of the first things I do.
It's the first thing I did after posting here but thanks anyway, like I said I just hadn't thought to do it yet is all on this 2 week old computer. Still can't see why it's on as default though. Are these updates seriously that much more important than anything I could be doing?

Still doesn't bring back that lost placement game =(.

I can't say it's ever happened to me while in a game or doing something really important, but I too would be more than a little peeved if it did.

I had a similar story to the WoW guy, except I was Woh/Infuse for a GvG AT. Turns out when the heal monk stops healing in the middle of a tournament, even just for like 2 minutes, that is a loss.

This just happened before I posted so I still got some games left, but now the pressure's on.

I hate pressure...

Yeah you have to pay for that one. Do it though, 7 (AKA Vista Service Pack 3) is plain tolerable. I'm dual booting XP 32-bit and 7 64-bit and I find I'm only using XP for my scanner (drivers don't work in either 64-bit or 7) and my "legacy games" like System Shock and the like. I set my computer to do that shit at like four in the morning, if I'm still playing games at that time, then I need my computer to turn itself off (I'd probably be playing one of the Civ games for that to happen.

I hope I can still get it cheap through my student discount, I can't stand the vista on my new computer and I wish it would just update itself into something that doesn't like to flip me the bird when I want to use it.

So you're playing at 3AM then? The easy solution is to turn it off, but you might also see it as a sign that you shouldn't play quite so late.

Yes, and it always happens during a very big battle on whatever game I'm playing, it's very frustrating.

You make a good point, but as a student on holiday, it's easy to simply not care about petty things like 'time of day'. Nothing actually happens til gone 3pm anyway.
My better excuse tonight is I'm staying up with my Dad because he starts again on nights tomorrow, as if you cared.
