id: Rage Would Be "Rushed" Without Zenimax Takeover

id Software doesn't mind having a publisher paying the bills for its upcoming post-apocalyptic FPS.

Last year, id Software - the developer that all but created the FPS with Wolfenstein 3D and Doom - was Shamus Young on this very site [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92641-ZeniMax-Media-Acquires-id-Software-UPDATED] and id co-founder John Romero.

id, though, doesn't mind being beholden to someone with deep pockets. Speaking with GI.biz [http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2010-10-14-tim-willits-rage-would-have-been-rushed-without-zenimax], id's creative director Tim Willits said that the Zenimax buyout meant that Rage would ship as the game it should be - and that the publisher is very hands-off with its management. "What's really great about Bethesda and Zenimax is that they're like, 'you know what, you guys have been really successful. We don't want to mess that up. So you guys do exactly what you're doing.'"

"I can tell you that if we weren't part of the Zenimax family, we'd be trying to rush [Rage] out," said Willits. "So it's so nice being able to say, let's ship it next year, let's get the multiplayer awesome, let's get the game as great as we can make it. Without their support, I honestly think that Rage would not be as good as it's going to be."

It looks like id remembers the oft-said axion: A delayed game will eventually come out - even Duke Nukem Forever - but a bad game is bad forever. Or at least until it's patched.

The trouble comes when a studio can't afford to keep its employees working on a game any longer, and has to release a possibly-good game in a currently-bad state. If Zenimax's funding means that id can take the time to make Rage the game we want it to be, can anyone really blame the developer for liking the situation?

Well, here's hoping that with that extra time Zenimax could inject some gameplay into what was likely to be yet another glorified tech demo.

The last id game I played and really loved was Quake. One.

We need more posts about RAGE, or I'm going to keep forgetting all about this amazing looking title.

I'd hate to for it to fly under my radar at launch.

Interesting fact:

The Zenimax CEO is married to Wonder Woman.

FACT.

"More than a few industry figures were unhappy by the loss of the "last great indie" studio"

Ummm... What?

OT: They shouldn't be lax about it; more often than not, long development times seem to negatively affect games. You get all the dribs and drabs of previous ideas (driving in Alan Wake), and then when you suddenly get pushed to meet a deadline nothing's really finalised and you get pushed into reworking a lot of stuff in a short space of time (what I suspect of happening with Mafia 2, despite how much I enjoyed it).

Last great indie studio? What had they made in the last decade that was "great"? They're maybe the last from the golden days of PC gaming, but certainly not the last great indie developer.

After Fallout NV and Fable 3, this is probably the next game I'm most excited for.

I think we're getting closer to the ideal publisher-developer relationship. Let the developer keep most of its autonomy but provide them with resources so the game has better PR and is made better. The publisher makes more money, the developer makes more money and consumers get a better game.

Totally agreed, it's the only post-apocalyptic game I actually really look forward to. It's the closest to my ideal of having a Mad Max game.

Borderlands was, well, Diablo with guns, and while I love Fallout it's still, y'know, Fallout.

Yes yes this is all interesting and all.

I found this sentence the most interesting. id is a proper noun that requires the first letter to be lowercase, so starting sentences with id means you have to start the sentence with the lower case letter.

This is much more important.

While I really really want this game, more resources and development time can't be a bad thing. Just please, don't make me wait that much longer.

While quite harsh, it's patently true. And more notably, I only loved it as a heavily modded multiplayer game.

If RAGE won't sell as successfully as Zenimax expects it to, this ideal relationship won't last for a very long time.
I suspect that id's insanely long development cycle isn't exactly what any publisher wants from a studio, even if it produces very profitable games.

By the way, I just love DOOM 3 and consider it one of the best first person shooters of the last decade.

.
Keep in mind that id is also very good at making engines. Even if Rage is a bit short in sales, it's engine could be very valuable.

The game is gonna be boss. Corporate takeovers are rarely a good thing, but in this case, it is!
