If Borderlands Met A MOBA - Gearbox Reveals Battleborn's Game Modes

Gearbox has announced Battleborn's upcoming game modes, which include solo, co-operative, and competitive play styles.

When Gearbox first rolled out <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/borderlands>Borderlands, it played like some bizarre mash-up of disconnected genres. This was a first-person, four-player shooter emphasizing RPG-style leveling and looting - and was so unique that gamers immediately fell in love with it. Now Gearbox is trying to pull off the same mash-up magic with its latest IP <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/previews/12255-Battleborn-Preview-Blending-Genres-to-Create-a-Hero-Shooter>Battleborn - although this time the mash-up has a MOBA twist. When completed, Battleborn will offer 25 heroes - each with their own personalities and weapons - who can level up over the course of individual story missions and multiplayer matches.

Battleborn's gameplay is built around the Helix System, which allows characters to go from Level 1 to 10 within a single match. But there will be persistent elements as well - experience can be put towards Character and Command ranks. Your hero's Character Rank lets you unlock skins and swap out augments from a skill tree. Meanwhile, the Command Rank levels up player profiles with badges, titles, and loot.

That's all very MOBA-sounding, but there's still quite a bit of variety within the actual gameplay modes. Battleborn's single-player campaign lets players fight alone, or with up to five friends, to save the last star in the universe, and can be experienced solo, split-screen, or online. Meanwhile, Battleborn also includes three competitive multiplayer modes. Incursion is a horde survival mode, where you defend a base from enemy minions while fighting alongside friendly minions of your own. Devastation is your more traditional multiplayer fare, challenging players to capture and hold key objectives around the map. Finally, Meltdown has teams protect minions who are marching into an incinerator at the center of the map, with points earned for every minion who reaches it.

Whether you're looking for Gearbox's latest co-operative story, or are more interested in the varied multiplayer, Battleborn sounds like it could have something for every player. We'll find out more when the game launches this winter - but I suspect Gearbox will also have lots to say at E3 2015.

Battleborn will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The Gray-Manes are the only family worthy of respect in Whiterun. The Battleborns are nothing but parasites suckling from the poisoned teat of a dying empire. Long live Ulfric, the true High-King!

Another moba appears in the quagmire of F2P. At this point it's like saying the sky is blue...

Oh, and I'm not bashing your article Fanghawk, just sort of commenting on the state of gaming at the moment in the moba verse. I think the ship has sailed on that particular game type a long time ago.

Had to do some digging but its not actully free to play. "I ask Mulkey about how all this might work, pointing out the free-to-play possibilities, but he talks about a similar model to Borderlands 2: a boxed release followed by substantial DLC." Paul Dean -Eurogamer

wait wait wait... i thought this was PS exclusive? i've been ignoring all news about it because of that impression. also, i have a general disdain for MOBA's, but that is over-comeable.

Aye, true that. There's no more room for yet another when honestly it looks like a bad mash up of Blizzard's up coming Overwatch (or TF2 clone, whatever) and League of Legends... or DOTA 2.... or Smite.... or Heroes of the Storm... or.. .you get the point, right? What's the need for another additional one of these things?

That's interesting. It might mean a more complete experience from the get go instead of the usual nickel and diming.

It is beautiful. I don't really want any more MoBAs, but this looks like something I'd like to run around and go 'oooooo' in.

Ok at the very least it's not a top down MOBA with a new coat of paint thrown on top. Plus this looks like it's more of a varied game with a Moba multiplayer mode thrown in. I can deal with this.

I want to like this. I really do. I obviously love Borderlands 2, but after The Pre-Sequel, I'm skeptical. I'll wait for some reviews, more gameplay trailers, and maybe even a demo before I buy the game.

I think we're taking this MOBA thing a little too much, we already have a glut of these games just like MMOs are a glut nowadays.

Be more creative than something that is just popular these days..

I had kept my eye on Borderlands since way back in their major GameInformer main article, when the game was still going for realistic graphics (I approved the change to the stylized look). BL turned out great, in my opinion, and the series has become one of my all-time favorites. Can't wait for BL3.

If Battleborn has a similar level of quality compared to Borderlands (specifically the second one/best one), then I'd be all for getting it. While some games with the Gearbox label have been...uhhh...of questionable value lately, Borderlands has been pretty awesome throughout.

Youtube forced this trailer onto me yesterday and i was like:

Wait. What? This Music is odd. 2K? Thats not Borderlands 3 isn't it?

GEARBOX??? Thats Borderlands 3! Isn't it?!?

A woman with weird hairs and tattoos ? Siren?

A Soldier with shiny armor? Thats no Axton or Roland. But why not?

A Big, muscled guy with a big weaon? There is the Brick/Salvador-Subsitute! I know what i'm gone play as!

A guy with swords? Thats no Number. He has a face! Wait. Or is that Mushroom with Knives the Assasin? Who is then that sword-dude?

OMG! Meanacingly slow moving into shining red light a-symetrical cyborg-person!?! Thats a Villain if i've seen one!

Wait. What's with that Bird-Faced thing? If that's an enemy, That's no Pandora. And the other alternative is to odd to think of.

Then i sunk into madness. One side celebrating, the other, darker side brooding.
Explosions, Arctic landscapes, Shooting a lot. I think i saw a Chaos-Symbol at least once.

A bow... Who would need this if there are a shitzillion guns?

And then they revealed the Title and one side died in agony while the other side now has full controll and writes it's success-story...

I started to feel tentative at the mention of potentially another MOBA, but this looks like it might have enough variety to be fresh. It's interesting in itself to play a MOBA in first-person, so I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

I do appreciate their efforts in trying to be innovative or well at least different. In my opinion I feel the market is flooded already and this business model of low development investment for content creation with fast cash shop Vegas style money returns? Pass.

Meanwhile the inde scene has been providing the exact opposite, good solid content that lasts more than a weekend with low to normal customer financial investment aka we are getting an honest deal being treated as a customer/gamer vs a wallet needing to be squeezed harder.

Innovative?

I feel like I've played a game like this before, Wasn't Super Monday Night Combat just like this? or.... damn it I'm forgetting a game here I think.... there was this game that sort of worked like a moba where you had to fight over certain points to bring fuel to your airship to launch a raid on your enemies base, or was that SMNC?

Anyway I like the concept but it feels and looks like something I've played before, darn my memory!

So... are MOBA's like the New MMO?

As in, the innovative new cash cow that every studio sees as a money printing machine?

Yup.

When WoW was going gangbusters, the market cloned WoW to a ridiculous degree and all of them failed to either replace or topple WoW.

MMOs are winding down, but LoL is still going gangbusters, so I'm sure you can see where this is going.

And it's all so stupid because if there's any one thing the glut of MMOs and WoW-clones demonstrated, it's that service-centric games monopolize players far more than regular titles due to their sheer scale and required time commitment.

So when players are presented with a bunch of clones, no matter how good they are, they will strongly favor going back to what they're already invested in after trying the competition.

EDIT: Well, the server decided to pitch me several bonkers Captchas, and apparently liked two of them at different times.
