I'm 13. Is that a problem?

Respect can be earnt (and lost) regardless of your age dependent on your actions and the sad thing is that a majority (or VERY vocal minority) of people in your age group act like tits.

They don't see it that way of course, instead they'll see it as being edgy, cool or simply one of the lads (it may have been a decade ago but I remember trying to be all three and, looking back on it, failing).

Either way, just be who you want to be and as long you don't become another one of the tits you'll be fine. Hell, I remember when playing the first MW the group I was with invited a 12 year old (shouldn't have been playing hey but hey ho) into our group as he was a funny, non-tittish guy.

I'm in your position.

We are a rare breed of 13 year olds who don't go around flinging curse words and such.

Well i guess the truth is that most of the kids that are that way are the ones who play video games so they are the ones you hear all the time, but some mature 13 year olds fall into the sea that is video games.

The only "Real" reason to hate on you're age group is you're voices, I dont really mind them but alot of people seem to hate the high pitch voices, But most people on the esacpist wont judge people by there age, So i wouldent worry.

It's just a sterotype, by and large the internet believes that you're a race of loud sub-primates with no people skills, and a lack of testicular dropping. This may be only a minority of 13 year olds, but the minority is alot louder and more noticeable than the better majority. Thus, we associate all 13 year olds as one group.

I'm in the same position as you, basically, I'm 14 and I only use my mic to talk to my friends on XBL, rarely talk in game chat apart from when in MW2, to talk to friends because of the party bullshit.

Though, to be fair, I do get cut slack when people see that I'm not a complete asshole when shouting over the mic, they normally talk to me in a human way.

It's just a generalization. Making intelligent comments and at least TRYING the mainstream things would be completely out of your expectations as a 13 year old. I bet in a few years, your group will be whining about the next group and so on and so on.

It's just a case of "the worst examples set the standard" like every other stereotype. The loudest of the 13y/o age group are the ones most of us come into contact with, so it's easy to assume that most of them are.

Aside from that, 13 is an age where most kids become obnoxious, know-it-all, attention-seeking teens anyway. It's hard to argue with psychology.

Those who are the most vocal and loudest will be heard above all else. People tend to remember when they have experienced the kind of person you describe but not those who act normal (for lack of a better word). In fact, I would say that by percentages, the loud, cursing, MW2 stereotype of 13 year olds is far lower than that of those that behave with a bit of sense and are respectful. However, it is the lower percentage that have colored our views of younger people by merely being the most vocal and loudest of the group. Whether that is fair or not, I'll leave for you to judge.

I would like to apologize for how your age group is stereotyped but let me point out one thing. Every time such an idiocy occurs, the tween in question is trying to act like he's a manly adult who knows it all. Just don't due stupid stuff like that and you'll be fine, your own actions define who you are, not the actions of a few prolific idiots.

Stereotypes exist because they are true. They might not be politically correct but that doesn't take away from the fact that they speak the truth, just because the truth is sometimes hard to hear doesn't make it wrong.

I'm a 13-year-old boy who likes video games. No Halo or MW2, but Mario and Zelda. But, according to some, we are a race of loud-mouthed-XBox-loving-curse-flinging-homo-phobia-ing(?) idiots with no taste. I'm a little tired of this segregation between the two age groups.
In a wider sense, 13-year-olds on the internet are a problem too. All our videos on youtube apparently suck and we should GTFO because we are a waste of space.
Why?
I played WoW when I was about 13. It was during the origination of WoW so therefore it was a couple of years ago (I haven't played the game in a while). I understand the prejudice towards younger gamers. I was subjected to it. Many people did not want to go through a dungeon with a druid tank (especially if he was only 13). So I tended not to use my mic all that much with people I didn't know. I used it with my guild and the people that got to know me because they realized I was more mature than most kids playing WoW.

My advice for you, is to perhaps not use your mic as much unless you are playing with someone you are familiar with.

Yea, this annoyed me too when I first came here.

especially the "Squeaky voice" thing. I for one have a very DEEP voice for my age. not that I talk a whole lot but... well yeah I have a deep voice.

If a 13 year old is playing an M rated game they shouldn't even be online anyways.
Well excuse me, but we wouldn't play M-rated games if E and T rated games don't assume we have no concept wanting a Quality.

(I mean CHRIST, how kiddiness=shittiness in so many kid games ive played?)
Mario
Metroid
Zelda
Super Monkey Ball
Little Big Planet
Pokemon
Katamari
Final Fantasy
...

You realize I could easily fill a hundred lines or more with amazing games rated E or T. Not to mention, everything I've mentioned above is a series of games (LBP2 pending of course).

If "quality" means you just want to shoot everything and have it explode in a gory mess, you're exactly the problem with your own stereotype.
no, Im referring to story and -most importantly- characters. kids games NEVER get this right -annoying protagonist -even mario and his pantheon of chracters is annoying as fck- is not entertaining, and when 90% of E/T rated games are godawful messes and disgrace to narritive, something ain't right. And heres the thing: good characters can more than make up for a bad story and is why I dislike kids games: even the most story-free kids games do SOMETHING to make what characters they DO have annoying as hell. they dont even have to be original: they could just be NOT ANNOYING. when you see SO much of something from a certain group, you tend to stereotype them.

yes, Im aware more mature games have pulled this crap too, but in a distilled, bearable way. and less often. ok fine I guess he gore has something to do with it...

and I know what I'm talking about: if my dream to become a novel/game's storyline writer(which, yes, it is my dream), can I really wish that if I didn't form a strong opinion on what is/isn't a good story?

now, for point 2(groan): they say "for everyone" or "for + (i think... whatever moving on) If that was true how come A game meant for kids and more or less falling into something I should like, ends up a truly awful mess, but someone younger than me LOVES it, despite the flaws being so glaringly obvious and even the kid notices them, can they really say its for everyone all age groups?

point 3: at this point in time bad gameplay is a near impossibility (unless its for the wii. ZING!). the youngest game I played that was bad GAMEPLAY wise was (I am so going to get flamed for this) Ultima underworld 1 from 199-1? 2?-, so I really doubt bringing up the gameplay is worthwhile.

and [sub]I[/sub] REALLY need to stop making these long, unfun to write arguments...

Why on earth are you expecting complex stories or intriguing characters in games aimed at younger audiences? You're supposed to just enjoy the ride like on a rollercoaster, I don't start critiquing the design of the surrounding or the colour scheme of the chairs.

Yes, yes it is because you are choosing to make a thread about it.

The reality is that teens in general are stereotyped as being morons. People of your age group are targeted partially because it allows the older teens to distance themselves.

It's because most 13-year olds sound the same; they usually have the same high-pitched wail spewing racism and homophobic comments to players or people who actually use logic to prove a point, karaoke-singing to mainstream songs we've all heard about 100 times. Most of them act like idiots, often fighting one another because someone didn't listen to their made-up rules because they joined the game late.

There are some awesome 13-year olds I've played with. They actually helped me learn the rules of a game I didn't understand instead of acting like jackasses. But that awesomeness is unfortunately veiled by the aforementioned stereotype, giving those players a bad reputation.

Like some have said, just try to prove the stereotype wrong.

EDIT: Most of the videos I've seen by 13-year olds on YouTube have game footage shown without a capture card. I don't usually mind this, but they can't stop shaking the camera or have a huge glare. Either that or they make sloppy AMVs or slideshows while Metallica plays in the background.

Ok I get it you're better than the other 13 year-olds,but keep in mind most kids your age don't have an xbox(it's true, americans). Also, you sound like you want recognition, and thus I don't like you X(,if I'm wrong I'm sorry.

Online nobody forces you to tell people your age,so you can avoid the "segregation" entirely.
Actually, I saw the thread "Why is today's youth so uneducated?" and got momentarily mildly upset. Kind of annoyed me.

Stereotypes are GENERALLY true, most of the time. Don't take offense to it, just prove it wrong.
Yea totally my black friend eats friend chicken everyday
And I help my Chinese friend plan American invasian plan
And me and my Mexican friend always go to sleep in school
Yea, GENERALLY true
/sarcasm
Stereotypes come from some bit of truth. It doesn't apply to everyone. Who doesn't like fried chicken? There's lots of people that would want to invade America. Who doesn't sleep in school once in a while? I wasn't really talking about racist stereotypes, but it's nice to see you had the class to bring them up.
