So a couple of nights ago I went to turn on my 360 (it is 6 months old) and it RROD'd on me. No worries I thought I can ring the store in the morning and sort it out.
I rang the store's head office first, they said ''As it is only 6 months old we will just replace, you can keep your hard drive or even as a gesture of good faith do a data transfer for you''! Great says I and we pop down to the store we purchased it from.
They took my 360 into the back and came back 5 minutes later saying ''We've got a problem, we haven't got any more 120 gig models only 250. So we have a couple of options - we can give you a preowned one with a full guarantee....'',
Me - ''Yeaaaah, I don't want to do that''
''Or we can refund you this and give you a new one, and you can buy your hard drive back from us''
''How much for''
''£40''
''£40 to buy my hard drive back, no! I was told you could transfer my data as a gesture of good will''
''We could but we don't have any cables''
''Well, why don't I buy one (cos I was going to anyway).............and I will lend it to you'', *smiles sweetly*
Cue flummoxed faces........... ''Erm, yeah... OK we can do that''
So I left them to it, went back, they put the refund and sale through, said the offer atm meant I could get Forza 3 for cheapmans, so I bought it (for the husband) And walked out of the store with a brand new 250 gig slim 360 for free (even if I had traded my old one in, it would have cost me a good £100) I am proper chuffed!
So yeah, is this the first negative becomes positive 360 story? Or have you had something unfortunate happen that proved to be serendipitous?
Also, the customer service in that particular store has guaranteed them my loyalty, they were friendly and helpful throughout! :)

Nice! Those new 360's look sweet. This probably won't apply to me but what store were you at that did that? I'm assuming it wasn't a place like Gamestop or Best Buy.

OT: I suppose mine isn't as great as that, my big fat PS3 gets YLOD and I go and get a slim. No discounts or anything but I kept the blu-ray controller that came with the fat one, it was maybe worth 20-40 bucks. :p

It was Gamestation, so I guess no, as you mention Gamestop I assume you are in the USA/Canada?

Nope, i've kept my fatty PS3 working cos i regularly vacuum it out to prevent overheating.

That said, waay back when i first got a PS2 it crapped out around Xmas time, we rang Sony who said they could repair in time for Xmas, failed to do so and then gave me a free copy of Kingdom Hearts as a goodwill gesture - i consider that quite a win

Buying Gamestations own warranty was a godsend for me, though it did become a running joke in the store when I had to take back my 4th bricked 360.

My friends also glad of that deal too, 2 weeks into owning his new 360-S, it recently took a shit and died, only problem there is that theres no more slims in stock to replace it with, but they are going to keep one back for him.

And that is why I should look at the Profile first, not the other way round.

Wow, nice work.

Sounds like good customer support to me,
maybe I should invest in one of these 'console' devices!

Tbf, I have always felt they have very good customer service, even since being bought out by Game, it still feels more, not sure how best to describe it, gamey in there. Lots of mainstream in Game more gamer in Gamestation, if that makes sense? :/ (trying not to sound elitist....)

You got a really good deal there!

I remember when I was making the choice between Xbox 360 and PS3 the guy in the store told me that if I was going to get an xbox then I should definitely get the breakdown cover to go with it as he told me they frequently had to replace xbox's... That kinda sold the PS3 for me...

That's great for you, I'm horrible at dealing with Customer Services, I can never be aggressive enough to get what I need. If I was in your place I probably would have just given up and payed the money anyway. My father, on the other hand, yells and demands so much that I feel sorry for the guy on the other side of the line. He can literally get anything for free or at a massive discount, and even get a special service from the Customer Service, just by yelling enough and scaring the crap out of them.

Talk about a lucky break. Good for you! :)

I don't know what repairs for an X360 would cost me if mine RROD'd... it's about 3.5 years old now and definitely outside its warranty. Never flaked on me once, though, so maybe I'll never have to deal with this particular problem anyway. ^^

Yeah, but he missed out the bit where you get a decent warranty on the 360, then....
Microsoft do really need to look at the reliability though as there is no way of quantifying how many people they lose (like yourself) because of it!

I always believe you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar, I find if you are really amenable and friendly (whilst making it clear that you won't be fobbed off) you can get a lot from customer services and leave them feeling like they really helped you, which is as nice for them as it is for you! :)

I've always found Gamestation to be a great shop, regardless of one's view of second hand games. The staff always seem to be cool and will go out of their way to help you out. Sounds like you scored a particularly good stroke of luck!

Well I am 44, so I doubt it was that, even though they are not going south yet! :)
But yeah, tbh, when they said the 120 gig wasn't compatible I never made the connection that they were talking about the slim (doh!) So I was chuffed!

Me too, I have a Game reward card that never gets used (used to go in all the time a few years ago) but even without rewards, I found myself going to Gamestation more and more. And tbh, I only really go into Game to see what their offers are then I go to Gamestation knowing they will at the very least match it.

Yes, haha USA. I'm assuming Gamestation is a pretty big business then? Thought Gamestops were all over. :p
