As you all probably know Canada has a reputation for allowing anyone who whines enough to immigrate and then offers these immigrants social services and subsidies. The government has recently announced that they will drop "Family Unification Visas" from 16 000 to 11 000.
This in my opinion is not enough. I am fed up with the Canadian immigration system. Many new immigrants exploit every aspect of it including the very lax "Family Unification" system where after someone gets into canada they can basically bring every member of their family over without them being properly evaluated through the point system. It is a huge burden for Canadian tax payers as these people bring over their elderly parents and grandparents who will never contribute to the Canadian economy and will just suck resources like healthcare and social support.
In my opinion the only immigrants that should get into the country are those who have the means and ability to contribute, and family members should be held to this standard. We brought in 250 000 people last year all costing the government money. I would like to see that number drop and make it so immigration makes money, so that students like me have a fighting chance to enter the workforce and come out of school without debt.

What do you think about this situation?

Don't worry, the UK is in the same situation.

As the Daily Mail keeps reminding us.

I can honestly say that I agree. While it isn't as big a mess as the American immigration system, it's still a legitimate problem that places unnecessary burden on the government and the economy. But hey, reducing the number by 5,000 is a step forward.

They remind us that everything is coming to attack us, while the Daily Star tries to convince us that everything that's not British IS attacking us. Yahtzee's joke about his Import smelling of Xenophobia became a lot less funny, and simultaneously more funny because it's true.

OT: Well, that is a heck of a lot of folk coming in. I'm sure that something will be done and that people will notice if it becomes a serious problem.

Calumon: Maybe it's a really nice place?

What bothers me more than anything is that in Winnipeg, a city with a severe housing shortage (between %0-1 vacancy) we are pushing immigration.
What i will say, is that i actually LIKE the family unification system, because it does help our economy. Immigrants come here to work and once they establish themselves usually send a large sum of money back to their family each paycheck, when their family is here they have a better opportunity to carve out their own place and make it and more of their money stays in the Canadian economy.

You're aware that 250,000 people accounts of 0.7% of the total population of this country, right?

Just how "huge" a "burden" do you think this proportion of the population accounts for, hmm?

Yes I am. 0.7% of the population still equates to a very large amount of money.

The costs of refugees are huge, and though my google-fu was not good enough to come up with the amount of money sunk into immigrant support programs I can guarantee that canada does not make any money through immigration in the short term and that in the long term programs that bring elderly people over due to family ties lose money.
