So this game has the potential to be a huge sleeper hit, or fizzle out with a massive ?meh?. Its release is next Friday, and it has undergone some significant changes in tone since the initial reveal. I?ve been watching some previews and while I?m concerned about how well all its systems will be executed, it sounds like it could at the very least revitalize open world gameplay if they?re done well.

Mild spoilers inside [https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=q30txSfnicc]

As a personal aside, while a ridiculous stretch I think it would?ve been cool if Sony and Showtime teamed up for a crossover of sorts, where instead of a biker outlaw you could play as serial killer-turned-lumberjack, Dexter. Ha, he could even narrate like the show did as you go.

I'm interested even if it is more zombies. I will see what the reviews say, if they say it is a unmissable masterpiece then I will pick it up next Friday, but if it is solid but unspectacular, then I think I can wait until it is cheaper.

I'm definitely gonna check it out, but I'll be shocked if it manages to actually be anything special. I'm not expecting a repeat of the first Infamous, for example.

Personally I have no faith in this game at all. It has too many red flags for being a pile of stink, mainly the sheer number of delays it has had. Wasn't it originally supposed to coming out in mid-late 2017? Then early 2018? Then late 2018? And now finally early 2019. It seems too much like the developer couldn't figure out what to do with the game itself and that means I don't have any real hope for it.

Though if the reviews show me proven wrong, I'll be more than happy to have another awesome PS4 exclusive.

I read somewhere where they called it 'AAA: The Game' which is exactly what it looks like to me. Like, a literal checklist of the template that makes up these games. But who knows, maybe it'll surprise? Preview builds look to have had a pretty lukewarm reception by those who played it. Game looks to have really nice menus though!

Yeah I dunno, it just seem like far cry:zombie which... w/e.

Maybe if they channel the good part of state of decay but without the akward part and the repetition that come from being indie they could have something interesting, but for now nothing really wow me about it.

I'm getting it on release, simply because I'm in a bit of dry spell for games. The combat looks really fun, I'm not worried about that. I am about the story, world, main character. I guess this game has a lot of cutscenes, so they better be enjoyable. I'm sick of giant open worlds with dozens of the same task to do over and over, see Assassin's Creed: Odeyssy. I'm hoping this is similar to Spider-Man. Finally, the main character is another grizzly white dude named Deacon St. John. Some journalists who got their hands on it say he's done in an interesting way and gods I hope so.

Yaaawwwwnnn. Another apocalyptic zombie game with sneaking/semi-stealth, and green/brown forest areas with the occasional snow. I know game won't be bad, but comes off as generic and something you would see back on the PS3. The fact that Last of Us 2 is a thing make this even more pointless to me. Not interested, and I am not even a fan of Last of Us either.

gotta admit, while the game itself isn't particularly filling me with any intrigue or excitement, am very curious to what the critical response is gonna be and why Sony seems to be sheepishly marketing a standard mid-tier looking title like it's one of their high-budget exclusives, yet setting the review embargo date the day before release as if the aura of flakey confidence couldn't get any stronger

That clip with the falling snow sold me on the game. Kinda looking forward to it now. It's a high profile exclusive and it's been in development for so long that this alone makes it too irresistable for me to pass up. After so many hectic games I'm also in the mood for something more..casual.

Well as reviews trickle in turns out It is mediocre yo. Shame. It is as if many delays could have foreseen this.

Yeah, judging by the initially tepid and mixed responses from previews it?s not surprising [https://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4/days-gone/critic-reviews]. I was optimistic it might crack the 80 mark (which it seems to have mostly done) but it must have more problems than it simply being ?another open world zombie/infected creature game?. Should be a fun romp when it?s a free + game some month though, and I hopefully have most of my backlog cleared.

From what I've seen, it has a lot of bug issues and pacing problems. Like a generic open world game with just a buggy story, and annoying micromanagement of the motorcycle. Buggy doesn't surprise me, it's probably a sign of why it got so many delays. Finally they got it to a level that was "releasable" but even that left it buggy.

Expect a ton of patches, and a quick price drop.

Probably best to wait and see if you can pick it up for 30 bucks on sale somewhere in a month.

Gamesradar [https://www.gamesradar.com/days-gone-review/] has a good review. It sounds like a fun, often tense and thoughtful survival game that eschews some of the tedious trappings of open world design. Hopefully it?ll be more polished down the road a few months or at least within the next year. I really have quite a backlog so that timeline would be fine by me.

Also, IGN [https://m.ign.com/articles/2019/04/25/days-gone-review] reports that the bike mechanics are done well and it is indeed fun to ride, which was one of my biggest concerns. The melee is also apparently very satisfying especially when crafting different gear for better results. Their biggest complaints seem to be based on the minor bugs, uneven survival elements involving an overly fragile bike (at least initially), and unfocused story, along with a mostly barren map that feels like a missed opportunity at engaging world building.

A little polish on the presentation and balancing survival elements better, along with fleshing out the mission variety and world to make it feel more once-lived-in and rewarding to explore sounds like it would have gone a long way.

So that's a resounding meh on Days Gone, right?
Pretty much. The game is just kind of crap. Three hours of it and I had to remind myself what an actual good game plays like by popping in Spider-Man. It's also been going through the 'nah-ah, it's good and critics suck' phase that bad exclussives usually do, like Star Fox Zero.

I really enjoyed this game. More than I thought I would. If you like Far Cry this is basically it in third person with zombies. For an open-world it also has surprisingly little filler and it looks amazing as well. Neat little effects like lakes coloring red as you shoot at zombies and absolutely gorgeous snowfall add an almost next-gen level of detail. Story was also better than I expected. I even really liked riding the bike like a biker dude through this particular post-apocalypse. Not as good as Spiderman but enjoyed it more than Horizon or God of War which I thought were both very overrated. Not bad for a studio's first attempt at making such a huge game.

If I want to shoot a horde a zombies, I'd just pop in Left 4 Dead 1 & 2. World War Z looks more promising by comparison. I grew sick of zombies by 2013. The only exceptions were RE2Remake and Onechanbara Z2. I mean, just look at this when Dying Light came out.
