Yea, I hope they work it out, it would be nice if there can be a good variety of contributors. And hey, maybe if they can get basic operation of the business nailed down they can start policing the pedophiles out of the forum...

It's nice to hear the opinion of someone working on the site on their opinion of what's happening. I was actually wondering what all the other content creators thought of this all. It's also about what I think. It seems both sides interpreted various sentiments and sentences differently, which in turn caused a communications breakdown. From what I've seen of at least the main staff, everyone seems really nice. I don't know about the people funding the series though (I'd never heard of the man who actually put up the reply on his facebook who was apparently funding EC).

I do hope that both sides figure out what exactly happened and get it fixed so they can move on. I like the Escapist, and I like EC, and I really hope this doesn't become a major issue where the two clash. Though it's unfortunate that it seems to be heading that way.

Hi guys,

My opinion on the situation in question is that neither side is inherently bad or to blame, but that there has been a massive communication breakdown somewhere down the line.

I certainly do not believe in airing personal disputes on Twitter or in any other public forum, I do not believe in torches and pitchforks and I feel like we would all do well to avoid knee-jerk reactions.

I wish both parties the best and I hope it all gets sorted out and resolved in an amicable way.

Thanks for reading,

Gav (Miracle Of Sound)

You sir, are a shining beacon of reason. I also think this is just a mis-communication on a massive scale, and that if both sides fix their mistakes (Escapist needs to give EC a bit more credit/leeway, and James needs to stop posting emotional responses that rile people to anger), we cna resolve this situation without any more hurt feelings.

You realy think that what they did was "good" or "honest". My boss never owned me 20k of my salary.
Like I said in the OP, I can only speak for myself here, not for other contributors.
yeah... so how should that help in this discussion. I'm pretty sure the guys from the SS also only have nice things to say about Hitler - does that makes Hitler a good person?

I'm really glad that when I read up on this story, I was able to see the perspectives of both sides on the matter. At this stage I don't think either the EC or Escapist staff know what the hell is going on. I'm waiting this one out and hoping we can all collect our senses and get past this ugly mess. Dear god, that was a strangely unintended parrallel with the riots 0_0.

Glad we have a voice of reason here on the Escapist, although saying that i do believe that the repercussions of Extra Credits may force other big names to leave, really the entire point is that a massive mistake was made by The Escapist which forced a great show to leave but if they did give Extra Credits the money they needed then this may have put other shows and people in the same position, its a lose lose situation either way.

Ah nice to hear someone taking a more neutral stance.
I have to admit I am slightly sickened at how one sided some of the arguments that are occurring on the Escapist, I thought we were all an intelligent people who wouldn't jump the gun and grovel at the underdog.
I remain neutral still as their are conflicting arguments like alex leaving out that the 75% was for the over flow not the whole thing.

What are you on about? Pedophiles on the forums? What? I read the words, but they're not making any sense. Does the escapist have a hidden side that I just haven't seen? Explain, please!

You'd honestly compare the relationship between contributors and the 'pist to the SS and Hitler?

Lol you fail History/reason/thinking forever. Silly boy...

Oh look, another idiot who's quick to rush to a "side" rather than have a level-headed thought out discussion about the matter. That's just what we need right now.

The guy you quoted...not you.
Yeah... because the guy who get paid from them is so neutral...

What do you mean with "quick to rush to a "side""... I wrote both statements - and I'm on the side of extra credits. If Alex want to add something more - he should write something! but he can't... because he knows he was wrong...

I'm glad to see that the community is calming down in some areas. This site is based on great principles and the contributors to some pretty great work. I hope that the contributors can be amicable with the main staff and no one storms out. Money gets people upset, no surprise. That said, I am willing to throw money at a donation drive if it helps preserve this site. We can call it Escapist-Aid.

Yea, I don't want to say too much, certainly not name names, but hang out in the off topic forum enough and inevitably a thread will come along that will get the pedo's riled up and making cases about why child porn should be legal. The mods are apparently ok with it.

I think your approach is the right one. We need not demonize anyone here, as this was a situation that you can look back on and see it was bound to have major problems at some point due to the lack of written agreements. Neither side here seems to want the other to fail, so it's best if we just mind our own business really.

Really...

I really don't want to see people throwing down blanket statement condemnations towards The Escapist, because this really just comes down to four people (the EC crew and Macris). The rest of the staff deserves none of your ire in this situation. I already saw that someone had trash talked Susan on Twitter for this. I'm pretty damn sure she and 99.9% of the staff are uninvolved.

Just. Stay. Cool.

Hey, I've weighed both arguments against one another and as far as I'm concerned.....well, that's the thing, no matter how I feel about it this is a dispute between The Escapist and Extra Credits. The winning side in this dispute isn't gonna be decided by who has the most supporters so how about you try and keep an open mind about the situation rather than jumping down the throat of one of the unfortunately small number of people who are trying to give a level headed opinion.

I mean "neutral"?

"Sides"?(Granted I was the first one to mention that word)

This is a business dispute, not a war.

It's good to get your perspective on this. The whole thing's just a mess really, so it's hard to know what the real story is. I'm glad you're happy with how they're treating you anyway, and I do hope things work out for all involved.

This is a completely ridiculous comparison, you have lost my interest and this exchange is over.

Also, Godwin wants a word with you.

In the interest of fairness....

I've never worked for the Escapist, but I've contributed articles to papers (Those funny things with words on them that people used to read) before. I don't know the financial situation of the Escapist in detail, but I continued writing articles for more than one paper when the decline started to happen.

I've been on the bad end of a few of these, because freelancers aren't really first and foremost when it comes to priorities. But I've also had good working relationships with some papers. And yes, I continued to write for people who might not be able to pay me.

The Escapist might not even be in the dire financial straits that they might close down before a contributor sees their earnings. This was not the case. I've worked with the understanding that I couldn't be paid right away, and done so for a few months in some cases.

How much they make as opposed to how much they were paid, I don't know, but this isn't immediately indicative of a bad faith act. It appears James and company knew of this and were okay with it. It appears the split between the Escapist and EC is further down the road.

I imagine the Escapist pays more than my freelance gigs. 20K would be huge to me. It doesn't necessarily mean the same to them.

Maybe the Escapist did screw them over, but there was an understanding. It may not have happened to you, but it does happen. I've made such arrangements in good faith. It seems Esc and EC did the same. Who broke that faith, I do not known. but to this end, it doesn't matter.

And if they weren't okay with that, they shouldn't have agreed at the time.
