Infogrames Extends Dungeons & Dragons Licensing Rights

Dungeons & Dragons [http://corporate.infogrames.com/] licensing agreement.

The agreement extends Infogrames rights to the Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property until 2017, covering current and future products, such as the Hasbro [http://nwn.bioware.com/]the digital gaming rights to nine boardgame franchises: Monopoly, Scrabble, Risk, The Game of Life, Clue, Yahtzee, Battleship, Boggle and Simon.

Infogrames CEO Patrick Leleu said, "This agreement represents a reaffirmation of our partnership with Hasbro. It is an important step in our business strategy that will allow us to keep and strengthen a franchise with significant potential, while giving the group additional resources to invest in the relaunch of its publishing business."

Infogrames has struggled in recent years, and its Atari [http://www.atari.com/us/]subsidiary recently laid off 20 percent of its workforce. The company said that the sale of digital gaming rights to Hasbro, which amounted to $19.5 million, would have no significant impact on its revenue for the fiscal year.

I never thought this news would effect anyone until I saw that Monopoly and Scrabble had been removed from the Atari site. Every night, about 1:30 AM, three friends and I would play online Flash Monopoly or Scrabble. Our evenings have been ruined by this deal.

Isn't it amazing how the most innocuous-sounding events can come around to bite you in the ass? But fear not, I wouldn't think Hasbro would bother dropping almost 20 mil to get their licenses back unless they planned to do something with them. Check around their site, maybe they've got something similar already in operation.
