I have heard of so many different stuff you can dissolve in vodka like redskins, toffee apples, roc candy, musk sticks and even chilli...the list goes on. I was just wondering if anyone else has tried any and if so have any recommendations?

I am going to try using redskin and roc candy tomorrow but it will take a week or so to fully dissolve.

Also if anyone has any mixes to stay away from that would be good, and does it really matter if you use real cheap vodka? only because everyone says you cant taste the vodka in the end anyway...so i managed to get 1.5L for $25...:)

The trick is finding something tasty that doesn't look god-awful in the bottle. If you don't care about that though, banana and toffee is a tasty, tasty treat.

Well, I sell alcohol for a crust, and I've seen a few infused vodka things in my day. I'd suggest to you that a little infusion goes a long way.

From where I sit, it's pretty important to start out with good quality everything when imbibing spirits, due to a little thing called congeners. Not only do they contribute to hangovers, they can make whatever you're drinking taste like shit. It's what separates Glenmorangie from Glenfucker.

Start with something like Absolut or Finlandia vodka at a bare minimum. Skyy works okay too, you don't need Grey Goose quality for it, but Smirnoff or any of those General Alcoholic Beverage jobs will ensure whatever you make tastes awful.

Oh, and drink responsibly kids.

Watermelon.

Cut an old 2L lemonade bottle in half, force the neck into the watermelon, fill half-bottle with Vodka and leave to stand in your fridge for 4-5days. Some balancing required.
Eat watermelon, stumble around drunk.

I've done this with Raki (Can't stand Vodka) and it works a treat.

Try bacon, go on, I dares yer...

oh vanilla, or strawberry, or bannana. Basically all the milkshake flavours. Ohhh Bubblegum.

Also, to make me sound more manly; scotch infused vodka.

I've injected oranges with vodka, I was practicing my needle skills at the time (med student not drug addict). You have to remove as much as you're going to put in or else it squirts. Then freeze, defrost and eat.

Bacon flavoured ice cream infusion. There you go.

Just DON'T buy pre-infused Vodkas. My lady friend once bought a strawberry infused Vodka.. it tasted worse than normal vodka.. mainly because it had a taste BUT that's not the point.

Ginger. Dried cherries. Orange peel and clove. Dried currants.
For that matter, clove, cinnamon stick, allspice berries and peppercorns in rum. Far better than that pirate themed stuff.

For vodka, if you do buy the cheaper stuff (Skyy is perfectly adequate), give it four or five passes through a Brita filter pitcher.

As for your vessel of choice, I recommend one of those fancy clear french fizzy lemonade bottles with the grolsch style fliptop. Wash it and sanitize before use, and change the gasket if you have a ready supplier (check out your local homebrew supply shop).

Wow. First time I've heard of 'infusion' at all. o_O Just goes to show that when the legal drinking age is 21, you have all the time in the world in high school to get creative.

I'll be trying these recipes soon. :D
