I have to agree, it would be an awkward fit. While the core comic book readers would understand, the mass public would not.

I think the reason the Mandarin is difficult to implement nowadays is that he was always portrayed (in part) as an ethnic stereotype... it's just as awkward as re-introducing a character like Dr. Fu Man Chu into the world of modern media and political correctness. :\
Well, I suppose they'd just have update that aspect of his character, although, to be honest I -think- that portrayal was only really in the early comics, the version of the Mandarin they used in the 90s cartoon was rather modern but keeping with the oriental style trappings, more Ming the Merciless than Fu Manchu (not that I wouldn't mind seeing a modern adaptation of Fu Manchu either :3)

If they go the magical story path then maybe The Mandarins' followers or family member may be searching for the ring and it can start with finding the ring off that leader of the Terrorist organization known as The Ten Rings and prying it off his hand then it continues from there. I would be surprised if it also had a scene with Iron Man and War Machine facing off against Dread Knight or some other enemies like Moloch would be in it.

If they go the technological path it would be rings that would bring the dead to life somehow and as you read this you find it difficult as I do so I hope that Favreau goes with the magical path. One way we will know for sure is if a hint for The Mandarin is in the end credits of the Thor movie.

It's been a long time, but didn't The Mandarin find his rings in the remnants of a crashed alien ship? I vaguely remember that for some reason.

At any rate, I suspect that the issue isn't what they are presenting. Right now people are walking on eggshells on staying away from politics. "The Mandarin" is a pro-Chinese racist based largely off of "Fu Manchu" and embodies "The Yellow Peril". What's more with current politics and conflicts between the US and China this hits awfully close to home.

Consider that The Mandarin is the guy who allied with "The Hand", kidnapped Betsy Braddock, brainwashed her, and surgically changed her ethnicity to be more properly Asian. Not to mention some of the speeches I remember him giving over the years.

It's been a while, but basically I don't think that putting mysticism into the thing as something outside of Tony's sphere would be a big deal, and could be played up on in the movie.

Besides if they are concerned about this, consider that The Avengers are supposed to fight Loki... you don't get much more of a mystical threat than that.

So magic would be akward yet we readily believe he can just create a brand new element to replace his pre-existing element....with a fancy laser?

Isn't that currently just as fantasmal as magic?

There shpould be no problem introducing mandarin. His powers aren't magical they are anlien technology, and besides, they introduced him in the first one: the Ten Rings group that originally kidnapped Tony Stark, and their leader who was backstabbed by Obediah Stain. Besides the way he talked about the Huns or the Mongols in the first Iron Man lend themself well to someone who starts out a terrorist nutbar and becomes a totalitarian imperialist. You could support the ideological flip considering his "righteous cause" was comeplettely undone by one super rich industrialist. There is no philosophy if you can't back it up with material power.

the Thor movie can introduce the 10 magical rings, the Captain America movie can introduce Gene Khan, maybe a scientist working with Bruce Banner in SHIELD.. Then Iron-Man 3 can mix those two together to Create Mandarin.

Each of the Asgard gods is bestowed a magical ring, Loki steals them all to build up his power base, finds that he can't wear any but his own, so he fools a Mortal with aspirations of glory into wearing them all. Loki gives them to Gene Khan, giving him the magical powers of Asgard.

Loki attempts to control him, but with Loki's ring, Mandarin is immune to the wiles of the god of trickery. Iron-Man tries to stop him.. Almost is killed in the process, even with the help of War Machine. Then Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and Thor team up to take down Mandarin.. They also Fail...

A little Deus Ex Machina happens, and who appears? OUT OF NOWHERE

THE SORCERER SUPREME!!

DR STRANGE!!

THE CROWD GOES WILD!

THE COMBINED FORCES OF DR STRANGE AND THE AVENGERS TAKES OUT MANDARIN!!

WOOT!

Thor takes back his ring, Imprisons Loki inside his own ring and tosses it into the atlantic ocean, to be hidden from all mankind forever, and returns the other 8 rings to Asgard to restore the balance of power.

After the credit scroll, a silver ring is lying, underwater, in a dark patch of dirt.. a scaley humanoid hand picks it up...

AND THEN WE GO TO ATLANTIS NEXT TIME WITH NAMOR!

Well, the rings are technically alien tech, and I remember them saying they were wanting to use the Mandarin since the first movie, not actually in the first movie, but sometime after that. Besides they made sure to have a nod to the Mandarin in the first movie, or did you think the terrorist group called "The Ten Rings" was just coincidental?

With all this talk of Fin Fang Foom I am thinking how awesome a "Nextwave" Film would be! I say bring in the Mandarin around the time you bring in Thor, makes for all the magic arriving in one hit.

Wonder how it would play out if the Punisher turned up within this new Marvel film universe, he is my favourite Marvel character and it would be pretty interesting to see S.H.I.E.L.D and Mr Castle going head to head, but good bye child friendly certificate!

I was under the impression that it was a particle accelerator.

And, yeah, the rings = alien tech.

You won't see Spiderman or Wolverine in the Avengers. For one, the film rights to Spiderman and the X-Men are owned by different studios. For two, they aren't traditionally Avengers.

I suspect the lineup we see will be similar to the Ultimates, with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Wasp, and Ant-Man/Giant Man/Yellowjacket (who knows which one). I'm sure they'll add in Black Widow too, and possibly Hawkeye. I'm split on whether or not I think we'll see The Hulk, and if he'll be an ally or an enemy.

This is kinda old news, Favreau has said he's peppered the two movies with Ten Rings references to set up the Mandarin. Also, the rings aren't magical, just high-tech alien-ware. Courtesy of:

FIN FANG FOOM!

Or rather, his alien-dragon race....but still.

Ooooh, can Favreau put the big green guy in his movie? I wanna see Iron Man versus the alien-dragon in purple shorts. With NextWave providing back-up.

But I can see them having to change Mandarin a bit....he WAS kinda a dig at the dirty, sneaky chinese commies when he was written. And we don't want to insult the chinese commies now.

They better include them! or i'll fume! and im pretty sure the studio's would let them anyway, considering the characters are owned by Marvel, and if Marvel want them, surely they can have them =S

Traditionally or not, they are still Avengers and fans will want to see them. i remember seeing the avengers as a kid, and Spidey and Wolverine were in their, if they want the movie to be successful they will add them in, because they are some of the best known marvel characters, they will want to please fans and one of the best ways to do that is bring them on board...

hopefully O.O

Finally

Don't forget to include "Demon in the bottle" so I can get the sequel I actually want.

Now we're talking!
I agree with you on all points: The Mandarin should have been in the second movie and "Iron Man as homeless person with alcohol problem" is a story arc that Robert Downey Jr. was MADE for.

Here's the big money question though: do we bring in the "alien power rings" part of the Mandarin's origin or base it on the initial interpretation of the character (ie: he's a magician)

Sweet! Considering how great the second Ironman was, Mandarin in the third would be whipped cream on top of a delicious apple pie!

The leader of the ten rings from the first film would be the perfect choice to become the Mandarin, I wouldn't directly call him the Mandarin though as the name has overtones of Fu Manchu and "the yellow peril" and all that. Personally though I'd like to see Iron man fighting Hulk at some point. I wanna see the Hulkbuster armor!.

The film is going to be based on the original Avengers which is Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Hulk (Although in the original formation the Hulk is basically tricked into helping them)

Personally the "new" avengers wouldn't interest me, I wouldn't mind seeing Spider-man as a cameo or something but not the Tobey Maguire whinge fest Spidey I'd like to see the rebooted peter Parker, who is hopefully going to be an actual teenager.

I really don't think that we will see them considering how well iron man has done for being a "lesser" known super hero. There are already several x-men movies in the works so those character licenses are already tied up and isn't spiderman going through a reboot since tobey's out.
