Irrational: BioShock Infinite Made With the PS3 in Mind

BioShock Infinite has a new engine, and that's good news for PS3 gamers.

Irrational Game's creative director Ken Levine has indicated that BioShock Infinite [http://www.amazon.com/BioShock-Infinite-Xbox-360/dp/B003O6EB70/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313062647&sr=8-1 ] will be optimised much better for the PS3 than the original BioShock. The PS3 version of BioShock was actually a port, and was released more than a year after the game came out on the PC and Xbox 360.

Levine said that the act of porting the original game over - which he said that Irrational had contributed to - had actually proven very useful when it came to making Infinite, because it allowed studio to get much more familiar with the console's unusual architecture. He said that for Infinite, Irrational was thinking about how to use the PS3's multiple cores from the offset, which meant that the studio was in a much better position with regard to the console.

"Look, I'm not blowing smoke here," Levine said. "We were Xbox-first for the original game, and now we have something to demonstrate to the PlayStation 3 audience." He added that he personally was a big fan of the PS3. He called it a "great gaming system," and said that he had three of them in his house. He particularly praised the games that were coming out on PSN, although he didn't name any specific titles.

BioShock Infinite comes out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in 2012.

...and said that he had three of them in his house.

In all seriousness, this is good to hear. I played the first BioShock on PS3 then on 360 and didn't think it was that bad though. Certainly not as stark a difference as between Assassin's Creed 2 across the consoles. Still, glad to hear a major dev is putting effort into a good PS3 version.

reminds me of this...xD

OT: Does this mean anything different for the PC/Xbox version or just him saying the PS3 architect is special?

I've played both Bioshock games on my PC, and I'll be playing Infinite on my PC, too. They can have whatever system in mind that they want. If it's tuned to the lesser hardware of a console (and this generation is getting especially long in the tooth) it'll run great on my PC.

Unsurprising and good to hear. I prefer the PS3 as a system to the Xbox (oh dear, I'm not a hater or anything, honestly) and even the PC (but that's simply because of prohibitive cost to get a good gaming PC).

It doesn't look like they're developing it on PS3, just doing more than merely porting it which is nice. The PS3 gets handed a lot of shit from devs because it's too progressive. Basically the system is highly different from the PS2 where the 360 is quite similar to the original Xbox. Familiarity means they'd rather make games on the Xbox and laziness leads to weak ports.

Curiously, most devs who work with both seem to prefer the PS3, I guess it's simply because of the power the thing has over the 360 but then, I would have thought they'd work on PC....curious.

Hopefully they will be dropping GFWL on it also!

News just in: we're taking advantage of multiple cores, so now you can finally get the gaming advantage from that quad core you bought 5 years ago.

PS3 first? That sounds... oddly irrational.

Really though, nice to see. I know a major Bioshock fan who only games on the PS3, so this is good to hear.

Eh, as long as this doesn't harm the PC version, nice for the PS3 to have a game that focuses on it for a change.

The PS3 first huh? That's something that I don't hear too often when it's a multiplatform game.

Now how about doing a solid for my PC peeps because a friend of mine bought the game for PC and damn near broke the game in half since it was impossible to play.

I wonder how many hundred of thousands of man hours have been completely wasted on PS3's boat anchor Cell architecture.

It wouldn't have taken them 5 f$#@ing years to get to this position if they'd just gone with a symmetrical multiprocessor architecture like almost everything else on the planet.

You'd be suprised. A lot have used the Ps3 as the primary platform after 2009.
Really? Huh. Guess I either don't pay enough attention or I didn't notice.

The more you learn.
