Is history as important, or more important, than Maths?

Recently, we got a project for History about the importance of subjects in today's society, and we got a corresponding essay.
On this essay, we need at LEAST 10 opinions (Not from the class, which rules out a finished essay in about 20 minutes) about whether this statement is true, and why/why not.
I debated asking around school, then realised most people there only take Maths, to kinda biased, then realised that somewhere I could post this and get un-biased results is none other than HERE!
So, dear Escapists, fire away!
Also, please no flame wars, this is NOT a vs thread either, so both calls will be ignored or reported (if volatile enough)

History is equaly important because of the old saying of those who fail to learn from history is doomed to repeat it.

as to my biases, i am ascience undergrad, but i still do history units, so im as nutral as your likely to find

Why wouldn't it be? If it was so unimportant, than why would anyone bother teaching it?

Personally Math because none of our tools would not exist without it
But History is about culture and your country its there to teach you how the country evolved.

I think some English should have some importance because Maths isn't a proper term.

I think history and math are equally important because those who fail to learn from history is doomed to repeat it, and we use Math to break down and understand our world

Both Maths and History are important, History is simply what happened in the world around you and what are the things that made the world you live in today.

Math is more prominent in our society, history is important too but not as necessary

Both are equal in my opinion. Math may be used more often, and takes a very long time to master the advance stuff. But history we need to pass down to younger generations. And the whole learn from our mistakes thing(still happening anyways but hey) Also what if you never learnt the history of your culture or country, then one day a hot chick of your same nationality wants to reminisce about the old county, and you dont know squat about it.......not like its happened to me...

I would say that as Maths is more useful and has ultimately done more for the world that it's more important; however, that isn't to say that history is unimportant. Just less so than Maths.

Both teach you how to think in different ways. Not understanding where we came from gives you no impetus to strive for a better future. Likewise, pretty much everything we have now is based on past events. I think everyone needs at least a basic knowledge of both history and math to be able to properly function in modern society.

Mind you I'm a historian, so probably a little biased.

The lesson you should take from history is so that you don't repeat it. It helps us narrow down our decisions so we can either expand on or fix past mistakes.

Math on the other hand is important for some people. Those people being scientists and engineers.

Other than that, basic math should do you fine.

It depends on what you mean. If you mean is learning history more important then learning math, then I'd say it's about even. I think learning math in general has the edge though as it's more useful on a practical level.

If you mean which is more important to exist, then they're equal. You need both to exist, as history is something everyone has and math is a concept that governs pretty much everything.

What you think is more important a hammer or a spoon? The answer is simple, they are both important in their own fields.

Math helps me with progress, and history reminds me how we always use that progress to f*ck sh*t up...

Math is much more practical, know a lot of history cool you can annoy ppl with useless facts. You know statistical analysis you'll have employers begging you to work for them. So being the money driven person I am, screw history.

Speaking from a high school perspective, I'd say math. Math in HS isn't about learning how to do complex operations that is 99% useless to 99% of the population. It's about learning how to take rules and apply them logically to a puzzle if you will. THAT is far more important than most things in school today because learning logic is much more useful than pretty much any other skill that is taught.

College on the other hand probably has some crossover from HS, but if you are taking higher math in college, it's probably because your career choice needs it. If not, then history is equally important, or more important because you can learn from other's achievements and mistakes.
