Is it possible to make a good Bible game?

I realize that the Escapist isn't exactly the best place to discuss religion, especially Christianity. But I want you to ignore your own personal religious or anti-religious stances for this thread. Is it possible to make a good game based on the Bible?

I think so. You'd have to stick to the Old Testament, because that's where the most action is. The folly of many Bible 'games' (and I use the term VERY lightly) is that they don't take the subject matter seriously. Take, for example, Moses saving the Jews from slavery. Make that a pulse-pounding stealth/escort game. Don't make it a kiddy platformer!

Anyway, that's my stance. How about you guys?

Wow, you could play Jesus, and you have to run across a huuuugee map, informing people and you have godly powers. That would be, sick.

Edit:

Oh and... ALL MIGHTY JESUS MODE ACTIVATED.

A post-apocolyptic survivalist game where you play Noah after the floods dissapate.

Old Testament style - Yes: Play as Yahweh owning random peoples who don't worship him
New Testament style - No: Jesus may have been a better person, but not interesting enough to make a game on

"Good" is a relative term. However, I don't think any sort of religious game based on Christianity could ever be more than novelty. It's would generate too much controversy. I mean, what the hell would it even be about? The Bible is rather boring unless it's a game about surviving the apocalypse in Revelations.

I have always wanted a historically accurate game where you take the place of a soldier in massive battles, so I guess this could work nicely for battles of the Jews against the Romans and such

A good one? Yes. A successful one? No.

The atheists would ***** about propaganda, and the Christians would say it "trivialises" the Bible.

If that is sarcasm (I can't tell in plain text), the Old Testament stories are far more interesting, and game-worthy.

If it isn't, I must question your tastes.

Maybe angel of death gameplay could be appealing?
I dunno how everyone would react to killing first born sons.

Well, there is that one passage where Elijah summons two bears to maul a group of children for calling him "Baldy." I want bear-powers.

I'd like to see one with a few liberties taken with it, but I have a feeling that if you strayed from the source material in any way, hardliners would be against it completely and utterly.

I think "modernizing" it a bit, at least in regards to the language used and modernish sensibilities might work (sort of like the picture bibles they have for the younger folk), but it's one of those fine lines that has to be carefully walked.

It'd be interesting to see if people could actually come out with something good and unique rather than complete ripoffs trying to make a fast buck (looking at you Guitar Praise) based on a fad.

Accually everytime Jesus ran up against a hate filled crowd, he ran away before they beat or stoned him. Like Assasin Creed, but not killing anyone, and just being loud in the market place.

I just had a thought : Samson. It's a hero who gets strength through his hair! Think that's ridiculous? Platinum Games doesn't think so.

if it was based on all of the bible, it'd be the longest most boring game in history, even if it was just the old testament. but if you narrow it down i guess it could work. saying that, you could make games on pretty much any religion. just depends how you go about it.
