Is the 3DS a good system?

I think it's a great console, sure it has a pretty wimpy library at the moment but it hasn't even been out for a month yet. Even if you don't care about the 3D, the graphics are beautiful even in 2D. I think if you held onto it you'd be pretty thankful this time next year when it has a stronger library.

I just replaced my DSi with a 3DS, I'm basically playing regular DS games for now like I did with my DSi. I like the upgrade in tech and haven't had any of the issues that people complained about.

Like people have said, give it time for 3DS titles to come out, but it's a good piece of tech.

My recommendation is if you can burn the cash, or you need a new one, get a 3DS.

YES! The 3DS is the sexiest thing since sex. I'm incredibly happy with my purchase.
This is by far the best response in this thread. I agree, I'm very happy about my 3DS, I bought Rayman 3D at launch and it's great, I'm also looking forward to the announced lineup of games to come. Here's a list of games that are announced for the 3DS.
http://3ds.nintendolife.com/games/soon
There are some games on there with definite release dates and some are speculated, don't listen to the whiners that cry about a small launch lineup, they need to realise that ALL consoles are like that on release.
If you have to drive an hour to test it out to be entirely sure, do it. An hour is not a long time (I drive an hour to work and back every day) and you will rest easy knowing you've made an educated decision. Honestly, I've yet to get a headache or feel squirmish with the 3D on and I've passed it around to dozens of my friends, told them to slide the 3D to a comfortable setting and none of them have experienced any negative side affects. Remember, people that complain always complain LOUDLY, so that's why it's much easier to hear the negative side of any product.

That's likely what I'll be doing, at least at first (just using it for DS games). But one of the main reasons I'm thinking of holding onto it is the fact that I don't have to pay for it, even if I would get the money back if I returned it. To be honest, if I don't hold onto it, I'll likely end up not getting a DS for a long while.

It's not the time I'd use, it's the fact that gas is up to almost 3.73 a gallon, and my vehicle would likely use at least $15-20 worth of gas just to drive to where it is. That's a lot of money just to check and see if I like a system (though it is better then finding out I hate the system, I suppose).

But thanks again for your opinion, as I thank everyone else. It really does seem like it's going to be a pretty good system, and from what most have said here, a lot of people are enjoying it. It does make the decision a lot easier on me to be honest, as I'm a very, very indecisive person.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It seems most have pointed out the main issues I personally have with it, one of the biggest being the tiny game library. But I'm sure that the production will pick up before long... this is Nintendo, and third parties seem to love them based on how much the Wii and DS were spammed with third party games.

I don't really care much about the 3D aspect to be honest, but the extra power and (hopefully) long life cycle makes it more appealing to me. I just think it'd be foolish to wait for a year or so until they come out with the next version if I have the chance to hold onto it now (not to mention I didn't have to pay much for it myself).

Not much experience with it quite yet, but hey, you only get so many opportunities to become an early adopter. I've played it several times and the Headaches never hit, but the technology itself is very impressive. Also, is getting the Kindle just a whim, or have you thought of this for some time?
It is a whim, but it isn't... I've wanted one for about six months now, mainly because I hope having it would allow me to read more with the huge library of free books it has (most being older ones with no copyright) and not having to carry around a decent-weighing book all the time. I know I could get those free books on my computer, but I don't care for reading on a computer screen, so the e-ink is really appealing (except the fact it has no light of it's own...).
Interesting, well Im fan of both reading and video games equally, probably depends on how much your local stores going to give you, I know generally most stores will give you the full price back if its unopened, but the local gamestop is absolutely thieving and kiniving, so go into it with discretion if you choose to do so.

Good hardware? Unquestionably yes.
Good software? Not as of them moment. IMHO, the best use of the 3D is the OK-Go video.

Luverly graphics with 3D on or off. A more powerful machine than the DS.

Also, a lot of eye specialists are saying that the headaches aren't due to the 3D but due to underlying health problems that the reaction to 3D indicates. http://www.thefamilygp.com/Watching-3D-may-detect-eye-disorders.htm

Although most people are just using the console for far longer periods of time than they're supposed to, which is something that we've been doing with all kinds of screens pretty much since screens were invented because we're naughty like that.

It's alright.
The games are pretty good, but Nintendo's habit of taking a good game, re-hashing it, making it shit, and puting it on the spot-light is still sadly there.

Well I'd say the 3D is a gimmick but I just look at it and think it's basically the complaints department for every DS system answered...only they wanted a reason to still keep the complaints department so added 3D. In short, it's a nice gimmick and I have only glanced at it and thought "Oh yeah that's pretty cool". The 3D does work mind you, it just seems a bit unecessary and adds to problems but overall it's a good system.

HOWEVER here is my advice. The main selling point for me with the 3DS is the games coming out for...none of which, have been released yet. Therefore I would wait until this little baby matures and get's a sale, so that you can play it with better games. But if you got it for free, I'd keep it and just wait, the only downside is that they're probably won't be any samey-first-person-realistic-brown-covered-shooters which someone really needs to shorten down, however if that's your only reason for buying games then why not join the army or live in a dirt hole? Seems a lot more immersive to me...

Honestly, I'm kind of regretting buying a DS to begin with, because, having gone through the list of ever DS game ever made, there are five that I like, and they're all Pokemon games. So I'd probably return it, and then maybe wait for a massive price drop first.

Ditch 3DS, acquire Magic cards. =P

Super Street Fighter 4, Ghost Recon Shadow Wars and Samurai Warriors are the games I have (bought my 3DS on launch day) and I absolutely love it!

Then again, I am a huge SSF4 fanboy and I can play it for hours!

The 3D is really good though.

I like my 3DS. I only have samurai warriors, but the system is exactly what i expected. I will be picking up Ghost Recon when i get the chance, and i still have my DS library to play through.

It's in the same situation that the DS was back when it launched.
System with unlimited potential but no fucking games other than Street fighter.
That was great to read in an Austin Powers voice, thank you.

OP: I have it. I haven't used it much. The games are mostly remakes, but aren't that bad, and the 3D works well. Haven't had any headaches yet. And what you get with the 3DS alone is fairly impressive. But a lot of it's functions for internet etc. weren't available at launch so we can't judge that yet.
