Is the recession causing us to work harder? (For less)

Please Note: I do not think employees should be lazy, but I do think there is a point in which workers have far to much on their shoulders and are not being paid enough.

After speaking to several people, I've noticed an alarming and sort of douchebaggish trend happening in our work force. Employers are making employees work much harder for no extra pay.

Many employers are (in my opinion) taking advantage of the whole "you're lucky to have a job in this economy" thing. Sure the economy's bad, but is it bad enough to the point where you much fire 2 people and make an employee take on their fire people's responsibilities? I doubt it. Also, employers seems to be offering no extra pay or bonuses for this kind of "shit" work.

Example:
A friend of mine who works for gamestop (and has been for a few years) said that his bosses were making him work way over time for no extra pay. He told me and he had to go stock up from 7pm-1am, and was offered no extra pay! Of course, had he not gone and stocked, he would have been fired.

I have more examples, but I'd rather not bore you with stories.

Do you think that the recession is causing employees to work hard for less pay?

Also, do you think that employers are taking advantage of their employees?

I wish the gov would step in and regulate how how much money the top makes so that they can ensure so many are hired.

It's not just how many people are hired. It's also how much work they are making current employees do. It's ridiculous.
"Here Jim, we're going to make you do these two extra jobs, but you won't get any pay. Remember Jim, you're lucky to just have a job!"

This is what unions are for, to stop this sort of thing happening. However, someone managed to fool Americans into thinking that "unions = communist gangsters" so now that the chips are down and the economy where you live sucks, you folks have no meaningful protection.

This has been happening for a long time now, even before the recession. I think it's just effecting more and more people as the recession rages onward. Most people in these situations are people who have no other options. And it's always big corporations who are doing this. The big corporations, Wal-Mart is a great example, look at it as 'Hey you can either do what we want and keep your job, or we can fire you and find a replacement within a matter of hours.' Jobs are disappearing everywhere, and if you need to need to kiss a little bit of ass to feed your family then most people will.
